DESCENDANTS OF SARAH GRAVES AND GEORGE WALKUP OF MA

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Sarah Graves (1) was born about 1694 in Sudbury, Middlesex Co., MA, and died in 1792 in Framingham, Middlesex Co., MA.  She married George Walkup, son of George Walkup and Naomi Stevenson, on 29 April 1725 in Sudbury, MA[1].  He was born 6 Jan. 1690/1691 in Reading, Middlesex Co., MA, and died 3 Nov. 1748 in Framingham, MA.

Based on various online sources, it is possible that Sarah Graves was descended from Rear Adm. Thomas Graves (genealogy 28) as discussed below.  The Richard Graves in the following discussion is the one in genealogy 28 who was born 7 April 1672 in Sudbury, MA, and was a son of Joseph Graves and Elizabeth Maynard.

Commonly published facts relating to Sarah:

1. The 1847 Framingham county history says Sarah (Graves) Walkup died in 1792, "ae. 98". This appears to be the source of a 1694 birthdate for Sarah that is echoed in almost all GEDCOMs that mention her.

2. The Framingham vital records show the marriage of George Walkup to "Sarah Graves of Sudbury" on 29 Apr 1725, with the marriage occurring in Sudbury.

3. George and Sarah had four children listed in the Framingham vital records: George, Jonathan, Henderson, and William, born in 1727, 1732, 1735, and 1740 respectively.

So we're looking for a Sarah Graves born circa 1694 in Massachusetts and living in Sudbury in 1725.

There was no birth record for such a Sarah Graves recorded circa 1694 so this person is not easily identifiable.

A 1722 tax list for Sudbury on the west side of the river lists only Richard Graves and his son Jonathan Graves as taxpayers.  This list also included Thomas Walkup, brother of George Walkup.

The hypothesis is that Johannah Perry of Watertown and Richard Graves of Sudbury had a child Sarah born out of wedlock, probably in 1694.

There was a Sarah Perry born 30 Apr 1694 and recorded in vital records as the daughter of John Perry and Sarah Clary in Watertown. These were Johannah's parents, and they already had a 19-year-old daughter Sarah who was alive at the time (she married in 1699). That raises the question of whether the second Sarah born in Watertown was not really their daughter - maybe an illegitimate grandchild of John and Sarah Perry instead of their child.

Richard Graves was accused in 1694 and 1695 of fornication with Johannah Perry. He admitted to the act but did not acknowledge that he was the father of her children.  He was convicted in September of 1695. Richard's uncle Zachariah Maynard brought Johannah Perry and her child to Sudbury by January of 1696 and posted a bond for them in case they became a burden on the town. No further mentions of Johannah Perry, her child, or Johannah's supposed sister Sarah Perry born 1694 are found after that. Richard Graves married an unknown Johannah no later than 1700 and had a family of eight children with her after that time. In 1725, an undocumented Sarah Graves of Sudbury married George Walkup of Framingham, and no parentage has been attributed to her since that time.

If Sarah Graves was actually the illegitimate child born to Johannah Perry ca 1694 and if Richard Graves married Johannah as his uncle most probably intended, then the remaining chain of events actually looks quite possible.  By 1725, Sarah Perry born 30 Apr 1694 was now known as Sarah Graves since her parents had married, and she in turn married George Walkup.  There's no VR entry for her under the Graves name, but she may be the person named in the questionable 30 Apr 1694 entry for what would then turn out to be her Perry grandparents.

 

All the children of Sarah and George were born in Framingham, MA.  (R‑1)

Henderson Walkup (4) was born 4 Sept. 1735 in Framingham, Middlesex Co., MA, died 30 Oct. 1825 in Colrain, Franklin Co., MA, and was buried in Christian Hill, Colrain, MA.  He first married Susannah Clements in Aug. 1758 in Middlesex Co., MA.  She was born in Jan. 1730/1731 in Hopkinton, Middlesex Co., MA, and died 2 Oct. 1772 in Upton, Worcester Co., MA.  He married second Sarah Drury on 26 Aug. 1779 in Upton, MA.  She died 16 June 1783.  He married third Susannah McNamara, daughter of John McNamara and Ruth Parkhurst, on 30 Dec. 1784 in Upton, MA.  She was born about 1737 in Upton, MA, and died after 7 April 1801, since she was mentioned in her fatherÕs will on this date.  HendersonÕs first 5 children were born in Framingham, Middlesex Co., MA, the last one in Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA, and all the others in Upton, Worcester Co., MA.  (R‑1)

Primrose, son of Harry Clay Primrose and Fannie sue Benson, about 1914.  He was born in 1896 and died in 1946.  Both their children were born in MD.  (R‑1)
