DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRIEVES AND ANN ------ OF SOUTH SHIELDS, DURHAM, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
John Grieves (1) was born about 1818 in South Shields, Durham, England. He married Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1818 in South Shields, and died before 1871. They were in the 1851 census for Westoe, Jarrow, South Shields, Durham, at 47 Commercial Rd. They were in the 1861 census for Westoe, Durham, at 6 Archer’s Hill. He was in the 1871 census for Westoe, Durham, as a widower. He was a cooper. All their children were born in South Shields.
It is possible that his parents were Robert Grieves and Catherine ‑‑‑‑‑‑, who were in the 1841 and 1851 census for Westoe, Jarrow, South Shields, Durham. Robert was born about 1801 in South Shields, and was a shoemaker. In 1841 there was a John Grieves, 23, pilot, living nearby. However, the occupations make this connection seem unlikely.
