Rev. 11 Dec. 2011, Gen. 4
DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS GRAVES AND MOLLIE ------ OF LAUDERDALE CO., TN & MISSISSIPPI CO., AR
GENERATION 1
Thomas (ÒTomÓ) Graves (1) was born in July 1857 in TN. He married Mollie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, perhaps about 1877. She was born in May 1861 in TN. He was in the 1870 census for District 1, Lauderdale Co., TN, working as a domestic servant and living in the household of Edmond Moody (or Woody), listed as Thomas Greeves or Greaves, all household members listed as black. He and Mollie were in the 1880 census for Dist. 1, Lauderdale Co., TN, with their first 2 children. They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Monroe Twp., Mississippi Co., AR. 6 of their 13 children were still living in 1900, and 7 of 14 were living in 1910. He was a farmer. They must have moved from TN to AR in late 1894 or early 1895, since all their children born by 1894 were born in TN, and the ones in 1895 and later were born in AR.
It has been stated by R‑1 that the parents of Thomas Graves were James M. Graves (b. 1820 in TN and d. in TN) and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (b. 1830 in TN, and d. Dec. 1860 in Carroll Co., TN). However, this is genealogy 211, and the son of James M. Graves and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑ named Thomas married Agnes Inez Donnell and stayed in Wilson Co., TN, so this couldnÕt be the same one.
The only other Thomas Graves of the right age that has been found in the 1860 census is the one in Haywood Co., TN, age 2, living with the family of Madison Gregory and his wife Emeline. Other Graves families that lived in Haywood Co., TN at about the right time are genealogies 156, 281, and 438. It is interesting to see that some of the members of genealogy 156 moved to Haywood Co., TN, and then to Lauderdale Co., where this Thomas Graves lived in 1870. The members of genealogy 156 also spelled their name Greaves. Edwin Augustus Greaves of genealogy 156 would fit as a possible father, since his first wife died 1860-1870, his last known child was born about 1854, and he probably remarried.
It is interesting that Thomas and Mollie were living next to several Henning families in 1880, and Henning, Lauderdale Co., TN, is where Alex Haley (connected with genealogy 270) was brought up.
