DESCENDANTS OF RODHAM GRAVES AND MARIANN MARQUESS OF VA & OH

GENERATION 1

Rodham (“Rodey”) Graves (1) was born 17 May 1771 in Stafford Co. (or Rockingham Co.), VA, and died 26 June 1872 in Genoa, Delaware Co., OH. He married Mariann (or Mary Ann) Marquess on 24 Nov. 1800 in Orange Co., VA. She was born 31 Dec. 1774 in MD, and died 13 Aug. 1861. All their children were born in VA. They were in the 1850 census for Jackson Twp., Franklin Co., OH. They were in the 1860 census for Franklin Twp., Franklin Co., OH. He was a farmer.

There is no existing 1800 census for Virginia. The 1810 census for Stafford Co., VA lists a Rhody Graves with 3 males under 10 and 3 females under 10. Rodham Graves was in the 1820 census for Stafford Co., VA. Rodham may be the one listed as R. Graves in the 1840 census for Franklin Twp., Franklin Co., OH, with his wife and two youngest daughters.

He served in the War of 1812, as a corporal, in the 45^th Regiment (Peyton’s, Stafford Co.), Virginia Militia, in 1814. All their children may have been born in Rockingham Co., VA; however, no census record for any of them has been found in Rockingham Co., only in Stafford Co. (R‑1, R‑4)

Sidney Graves (2) was born 15 (or 16) Aug. 1801 in Rockingham Co., VA, and died 26 Oct. 1879 in Fall Creek Twp., Henry Co., IN. He married Margaret Dipboye, daughter of Abraham Dipboye and Rose Anna (or Rosannah) Goodyear, on 4 Oct. 1830 in Rockingham Co., VA. She was born 17 (or 13) Dec. 1813 in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA, and died 2 Sept. 1898 in Henry Co., IN (or Bartlett, Labette Co., KS). They were both buried in Painter Cem., Fall Creek Twp., Henry Co., IN. They were in the 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses for Fall Creek Twp., Henry Co., IN. Their first 9 children were living with them in 1850, and their last 6 children were living with them in 1860. He was a farmer. Their first 3 children were born in Rockingham Co., VA, and all the others in Henry Co., IN.

From The Compendium of Biography, Henry County, Indiana, 1920: “The parents of Joseph Graves, Sidney and Margaret (Dipboye) Graves, were respectively natives of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and were married in the latter state. About 1834 they came to Indiana and settled on the farm now owned by their son Joseph, but which was without any special improvements save a small log cabin and a few acres denuded of their forest growth, but of which Sidney later put sixty acres under cultivation. On this farm the parents lived until 1868 and then retired to Middletown, where the father died in his seventy-ninth year, and the mother then made her home with her children, spending her latest years at the home of her son Joseph on the old homestead, dying at the age of eighty-two years, eighteen years after the death of her husband. Their family comprised twelve children, of whom ten attained mature years, the eldest dying in childhood and the youngest when sixteen. Of those who grew to maturity, George H. died in Delaware County; two reside in Henry County, Joseph, of this notice, and Lizzie, wife of William Leiphardt, of the Middletown woolen factory.” (R‑1, R‑2, R‑4)

Rodham Graves (9) was born 31 Aug. 1814 in Stafford Co. (or Rockingham Co.), VA, and died 9 Nov. 1850 in IN. He married Martha Shank on 23 Sept. 1838. She was born 2 July 1816 in Rockingham Co., VA, and died 29 May 1892 in Bethel Twp., Delaware Co., IN. Rodham was in the 1840 census for Delaware Co., IN. All their children were probably born in IN.

After Rodham died, Martha married second William Stillson Finley, son of George Finley and Margaret Hawthorne, in 1853. They were in the 1860 census for Muncie, Centre Twp., Delaware Co., IN. Martha’s children, Rebecca and Minerva were listed as Finley. Some of the other children were apparently “farmed out” to other families.

Lucinda Graves (13) was born 23 Feb. 1824 in Rockingham Co., VA, and died 27 July 1901 in Genoa Twp., Delaware Co., OH. She first married Michael Bookman. He was born about 1824 in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany, and died 9 Jan. 1850. She married second ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Dunn. She married third Elisha Decker on 14 May 1857 in Franklin Co., OH. He was born about 1802 in OH.

Lucinda was in the 1850 census for Jackson Twp., Franklin Co., OH, with her Bookman children, living next to her parents. They were in the 1860 census for Genoa Twp., Delaware Co., OH, when he was listed as Moses Decker, and her children Adam and Louisa Bookman were living with them, as well as some of his children by his first marriage. They were in the 1870 census for Genoa Twp., Delaware Co., OH, with her father living with them and listed as 99, cooper. Elisha had apparently been married before, since there were two grown children living with them in 1870, Elizabeth, 27, and Stephen, 24. Elisha was a farmer. Lucinda was in the 1900 census for Genoa Twp., Delaware Co., OH, widowed, with her children James and Alice. All Lucinda’s children were born in OH. (R‑3, R‑4)

She was born 3 Jan. 1883 in Paola, Miami Co., KS, and died 15 Dec. 1926 in Bartlett, KS. She had first married Howard Benton Robinett on 4 June 1905 in Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., KS.
