Rev. 3 Dec. 1989, Gen. 12

Willis Graves (1) was born 10 Nov. 1808, probably at Culpeper Court House, Culpeper Co., Va., and died 7 June 1879 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Ind. (There was a Willis Graves who was born 12 Oct. 1790, and was a son of Absalom Graves and Felicia White, descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of Va. Absalom was born in Culpeper Co., now Madison Co., Va., and Willis was also born there. they moved to Boone Co., Ky. in 1797. This Willis was married twice. It is possible that John Card Graves got the Willis born in 1790 confused with the one born in 1808. It is also possible that the two were related. Boone Co., Ky. is less than 100 miles from Ross Co., Ohio).

Willis married twice (according to John Card Graves). He secondly married Jane Carothers (or Carruthers), daughter of Thomas Carother (or Carothers) of Irish ancestry (born 1783), about 1830, probably in Chillicothe, Ross Co., Ohio. (This marriage date may be based on the birth date of the oldest child. If Jane was the second wife, the marriage date may have been later.) Jane was born 21 Feb. 1815, probably in Ross Co., Ohio, died 16 Feb. 1876 in Lincoln, Benton Co., Mo., and was buried in Larkey Cem., Benton Co. Most of the children listed below were shown in the 1850 census, taken Sept. 6, for District 131, Ohio.

It also seems possible that Willis is descended from part of the Quaker family descended from a Thomas Graves of New Castle Co., Del. Many of the Graves family members in Ross Co., Ohio, were part of this family.

It is also possible that Willis Graves was related to John Graves of Pike Co., Ohio. There was a family story that John was a wealthy landowner in Culpeper Co., Va. There was a Lewis Graves who was supposedly John's son and lived in Ross Co., Ohio. Lewis was born about 1777 and died in 1848 in Ross Co.

All of the children were supposedly born near Chillicothe, Ross Co., Ohio. Thomas and Irvin were supposedly in the Union Army in the Civil War. (R-1, R-2, R-200)
