DESCENDANTS OF JONATHAN GREAVES AND ELIZABETH DICKSON

OF NC AND AL

GENERATION 1

Jonathan Greaves (1) was born about 1764, possibly in VA or NC, and died about 1821 in Lauderdale Co., Ala.  He married Elizabeth Dickson, daughter of General Joseph Dickson and Margaret McEwen, in 1789.  She was born 16 Nov. 1767 in N.C., and died 15 May 1846 in Lauderdale Co., Ala.

General Joseph Dickson was born in April 1745 in Chester Co., Pa., and died 14 April 1825 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., Tenn.  He was a general in the American Revolution, who served as a member of Congress in 1799-1801 from N.C., and who served in the Tennessee legislature after moving to that state.  He married Margaret McEwen in 1763 in Harrisburg, Pa.  She was born in 1741, and died 10 Nov. 1841 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Jonathan Greaves was Clerk of Courts in Lincoln Co., N.C.  Jonathan and Elizabeth moved in 1805 from Lincoln Co., N.C. to Rutherford Co., Tenn., settling near Salem. He owned more than 3,000 acres of land in Bedford Co., Tenn., where he settled before 1812.  They moved to Florence, Lauderdale Co., Ala. in 1817 or soon after that.

Two of the children of Jonathan Greaves are said to have married two of the children of Robert Smith (father of Virginia Smith).  However, the following list of the children of Robert Smith from Roster of the Tenn. Soc. NSDAR, 1960-1970, vol. 2, pp. 693-694, does not substantiate that claim: (1) John, b. 16 July 1776, m. Jane Carter Fariss, 13 Aug. 1797; (2) Elizabeth, m. Dr. William T. Henderson of Ky.; (3) Sophia, m. Dr. James L. Armstrong; (4) Virginia, m. Joseph Graves; (5) Henrietta, b. 5 March 1791, m. Burrell Featherstone; (6) Harriett, m. Archelous J. Johnson; (7) Susan, m. Henry A. Thompson; (8) Robert, m(1) Mary Marshall, m(2) Mrs. Cicily Morton Smith; (9) Mary, b. 1780, m. George Morris, 1798.

If this is correct, then who was the father of Thomas Jarrett Smith who married Margaret D. Greaves?  Was Thomas just left off the list of Robert's children?  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3, R‑4, R‑5)

Children - Greaves

+2.  Mary Dickson Greaves, b.c. 1790, m. Isaac Holland, Jr., Sept. 1807, d. 28 Feb. 1809.

  3.  Adeline F. Greaves, b.c. 1791, never married, d. 1835 or 4 Aug. 1847 (Lauderdale Co., AL).  Her will was dated 8 Dec. 1849, Vincent M. Benhan, Administrator.  These dates don't make sense; the date of her will had to be before her death.

  4.  Elizabeth F. Greaves, m. William Mears Warner, 12 Sept. 1816 (Bedford Co., TN).

+5.  Margaret D. Greaves, b.c. 1794, m. Thomas Jarrett Smith, 18 July 1810, d. 1864.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JONATHAN GREAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH DICKSON

Mary Dickson ("Polly") Greaves (2) was born about 1790 in Lincoln Co., NC, and died 28 Feb. 1809 in Gastonia, Gaston Co., NC.  She married Isaac Holland, Jr., in Sept. 1807 in Lincolntown, NC.  He was born 26 July 1781, and died 9 Aug. 1857 in Gaston Co., NC.  (R‑6)

Children - Holland

+9.  Eliza Greaves Holland, b. 1808, m. Burrell Featherston Wells, 8 Dec. 1829.

Margaret ("Peggy") D. Greaves (5) was born about 1794, and died in 1864 in Memphis, TN.  She married Thomas Jarrett Smith, son of Maj. Robert Smith, on 18 July 1810.  He was born about 1790 in Goochland Co., VA, and died 14 Jan. 1835 in Panter's Creek, 5 miles west of Murfreesboro, TN.  (R‑6)

  14.  Margaret Elizabeth Smith, m. Charles B. Goss.

+15.  Mary Elizabeth Smith, m. Robert S. George, d. 1850.

Joseph Decatur Greaves (6) may have been born in VA, or in Feb. 1795 in Lincoln Co., NC[1], and died after 1824 in Rutherford Co., TN.  He married Virginia Smith, daughter of Capt. (or Major) Robert Smith and Mary Jarratt.  Virginia was born about 1792 in Goochland Co., VA, and died in Rutherford Co., TN.

Robert Smith was born 18 June 1749 in Va., and died 30 Sept. 1822 in Rutherford Co., Tenn., son of Major Lawrence Smith.  He married Mary Jarratt on 11 Aug. 1774. She was born in 1755 in Va., and died 1835-37.

Joseph Decatur Greaves was apparently living in 1824, since one reference says: "Estate of Jonathan Greaves, dec'd, Lauderdale Co., Ala., on 13 Feb. 1824, Joseph D. Greaves 'presented an account which was rejected for want of testimony.'"  For whatever reason, the children listed below are said to have been reared by their paternal and maternal grandparents.  It may be that Joseph's wife, Virginia, died early.

Joseph was with his father in Bedford Co., Tenn. in 1812, but he was again a citizen of Rutherford Co., Tenn. in 1814.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑4, R‑6, R‑201)

Robert C. Greaves (18) was born 17 July 1817 in Tenn., probably Rutherford Co., where both sets of his grandparents lived at the time, died 4 Jan. 1882 in Cumby, Hopkins Co., Texas, and was buried at Mt. Zion Cem. in Cumby.  According to The Smith-Jarratt Genealogy, his middle name was Smith.

Robert was an early settler of Hopkins Co., Texas. Not much is known about his early life.  Soon after he was born, his grandparents, Jonathan and Elizabeth Greaves, moved to Florence, Lauderdale Co., Ala.  His parents may have moved there too.  Both of his grandfathers died about 1821.

His mother probably died rather young, and he was reared by his grandmother in Florence.

According to his obituary in the Texas Christian Advocate, Robert Greaves felt called to preach while attending a revival meeting in Florence as a young man. He resisted the call, and "grew wicked" instead.  Perhaps this is why he moved to Texas.

Robert Greaves went to Texas while it was still the Republic of Texas in 1837.  He settled in Harrison Co., where he received a land grant certificate for 320 acres in 1840, when he was 23 years old.  He probably went to Texas with his brother, Decatur, who also received a land grant for 320 acres.  At this time Robert Greaves did not redeem his certificate to claim his land.

In June 1841, Robert Greaves joined the Texas Rangers, serving under Capt. J. D. Lilly.  He was stationed near Daingerfield.  In the same company were two brothers, John Norris King and Nathaniel King, sons of John and Martha King, who had moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, and then had come to Texas in the late 1830's. The King family lived on their land grant near Daingerfield.  Robert Greaves married Sophronia Ann King, sister of his two Ranger buddies, on 10 Feb. 1842.  She was born about 1824 in TN.[2]

John King is a fairly common name, and it has been difficult to trace his movements.  However, he seemed to travel with O. H. King, who later moved to Hunt Co.  It is not known what the relationship between these two men was; John King was 17 years older.  They could have been father-son, brothers, uncle-nephew, or cousins.  They were together in Henderson Co., Tenn. in 1830, and they traveled through Texas together.  O. H. King witnessed many of John King's legal papers.  About 1847 John King sold his land in Titus Co., and the Greaves and Kings moved to Hopkins Co.  John King bought land from Harmon Blackmon, and Robert Greaves redeemed his land grant certificate.  John King died in 1851, and Martha King continued paying taxes on the land for four more years.

The Greaves family continued living in Hopkins Co. except for a brief period of time around the Civil War, when they moved to Erath Co.  Robert's brother, Decatur, was living in West Texas at this time also.  Robert Greaves had yielded to the call to preach, and was listed on the 1860 Erath Co. census as a Methodist minister.  Robert and Sophronia Greaves were the parents of ten children, nine of whom lived to adulthood.

After a short time, the Greaves family moved back to Hopkins Co., where they remained for the rest of their lives.  Robert Greaves died in 1882 at the age of 65, and Sophronia King Greaves lived until she was past 90, and died 16 Nov. 1914.  She was buried beside her husband at Mt. Zion Cem., Cumby, Texas.  (Most of the preceding information is from material submitted by Cindy Stamps to the Hopkins Co. Gen. Soc. for a book they plan to publish in 1986.)

Living next door to the Robert Graves family in 1850, in household 164, p. 146, was Benjamin I. Grace (or Graves), 28, blacksmith, born TN, and Mary, age 24, b. AR, Matilda I., 5, b. AR, Louisa A., 3, b. TX, and Minta E., 1, b. TX.  Although it is likely that the name is Grace rather than Graves, it seems more than coincidence that he was living next to Robert, and it seems possible that Benjamin was a younger brother.  However, Benjamin and Mary were also in the 1880 census for Lavaca Co., TX, and the name was definitely Grace in that census.

The Robert C. Greaves family was listed (as Graves) in the 1850 and 1880 censuses for Hopkins Co., TX, and as Greaves in the 1860 census for Stephensville, Erath Co., TX (beat 3, p. 26).  The names of the children were all from the census records.  (R‑4, R‑9)

Lawrence Decatur Greaves (19), apparently often referred to as Decatur, was born 21 Dec. 1820 in Franklin Co., Tenn. (or possibly Memphis, Shelby Co., Tenn.), died 30 April 1900, and was buried in Camp Colorado Cem., Coleman Co., Texas.

He first married Sarah E. Tate on 11 Aug. 1847.  She died in 1853 at Brenaham, Washington Co., Texas.  He secondly married Mary Ann (Martin) Leroy on 10 Sept. 1856.  She was born 1835 in NC, died 20 May 1861, and was buried in Camp Colorado Cem., TX..  He thirdly married Nancy Ann St. Clair on 8 Feb. 1862.  She was born 28 Feb. 1839 and died 24 June 1916.  Some of L. D.'s descendants kept the spelling Greaves and others changed it to Graves.

In a book, The First Settlers of Shelby and Harrison Co., Texas, 1838-40, by Gifford White, on pages 48 and 49, is a petition by 93 people of that area to establish a county.  No. 31 is a signature of R. C. Greaves, no. 32 is L. D. Greaves, no. 34 is John Graves.  On page 57 there are 6 names of men who were rejected on Certificates of Land Grants, rejected as fraudulent. Among them was Decatur Graves on 320 acres.  This was 20 April 1840, as part of a report by the "Traveling Board."

Decatur was listed in the 1850 census for Travis Co., TX, page 136, in the household of Thomas and Mary Tait, as Decater Graves, age 30, peddler, born AL, with Sarah E. Graves, 24, b. NC.  He was a soldier at Camp Colorado, having come there with the troops in 1857 as a guide.  He was the first County and District Clerk in Coleman Co. and the first elected Sheriff.  R‑200 writes: “He was a leader in making the county a safe place to live and raise a family.  He was a brave and honorable man.”

The following article titled One of the Old-Time Sentinels was written by Walter Woodard, Sr., the first County Attorney of Coleman Co., TX, and appeared in the Sheriff’s Association of Texas magazine:

“It has been more than fifty years since Coleman County was organized.  The first sherrif was L. D. Graves, who belonged to that frontier type that has never been surpassed.  He had many bad characters to deal with because the country west of him was all unorganized and criminals naturally hung along the fringe of civilization.

In those days the rough element resorted to booze and cards, and there were several places around town that were concentrating points for that element.  On one occasion Mr. Graves was handed papers for the arrest of a certain offender wanted in Brown County, and an investigation led to the conclusion that the party wanted was engaged at cards with a tough bunch in a certain log house that stood on Commercial Avenue.  He went to the place and demanded entrance but when the door opened the first thing or things that he could see were the barrels of a number of pistols that stuck out through the small space.

“Mr. Sheriff, you needn’t try to come in here to take anybody,” declared one of the men on the inside.

L. D. Graves was a cool man and he wasn’t afraid of anything in the world, and there was some surprise upon the part of bystanders when he went away.  His horse was hitched close by and he mounted the animal and rode off, as the gambler chuckled and got back around the table to continue their game.

“That isn’t a bit like L. D.,” spoke up a well known Coleman citizen.  “He should call for aid and storm the place.  It is a shame to permit a bunch of toughs to dictate the law.”

But the discussion didn’t last long.  In a few minutes Mr. Graves returned, and with a six-shooter in his hand he knocked on the door and demanded admission.  Some one opened the door and commenced remonstrating:  “It will be safer for you to go your way and leave us alone,” he said.

“Now, see here, fellows,” spoke the sheriff, in a tone that displayed no excitement whatever, “I have a warrant for the arrest of a man who is in that room.  The State of Texas is behind this warrant, and I am going to serve it within the next three minutes.  I’ve gone home and kissed the old lady and the children good-by.  I’m prepared to execute my duty and will do so.  Now open the door at once or I will kill the first man who offers any sort of resistance.”

There was something so cool and of such a determining nature in what Mr. Graves said that the door opened and the man sought was placed under arrest and held for the arrival of officers from Brown County.  He had been guilty of murder and had taken a chance at coming back into an organized county to do a little drinking and gaming, and was caught.

When L. D. Graves was laid to rest in a little cemetery in Coleman County, some of the best men the west ever knw were there.  He lived a clean, dispassionate life in the sight of God and his fellows, and he went away just like he had done everything else, coolly, calmly, and unafraid.  He just said “good-by” to his family as he always did when he went to arrest a bad prisoner, and slipped out, prepared to face all the consequences.”  (R‑1, R‑200)
