about 1817-1820[1] in NC, and
died after 1880. He married
Melvina (or Malvina or Melviny or Vina) ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born into slavery in July 1816[2]
in NC, and died in 1910 or 1913[3]. They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses
for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC.
She was in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Stony Creek Twp., Caswell Co.,
NC, as a widow, living with her daughter Ella. In 1910 she said that 3 of her 14 children were still
living. Only 9 children are listed
below. Another son may have been Alfred
(b.c. 1846), since he and his wife Emma lived next to Orange and Gabriel in
1880. All their children were born

and 1880 censuses for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. All their children were born in NC. He was a farmer. He married second Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑
about 1895. She was born in Feb.
1866 in NC. This family was

Malone Place. He was in the 1870
census for Yanceyville, NC, with his first wife. He was in the 1880 census for Yanceyville, NC, with his
second wife. It seems possible
that some of the children (perhaps Willie and Joseph) might have been by a
previous marriage of his second wife.

They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Stony Creek Twp., NC. He was a farmer. All of their 3 children were still
living in 1910, but only one was still living at home.

Logan Harris and Patsy Harris, on 25 Dec. 1895 in Caswell Co., NC[8]. She was born about 1879 in VA. This family was recorded on the 1900

were in the 1910 census for 606 Gilmer Alley, Greensboro, Ward 2, Guilford Co.,

1930 censuses for Philadelphia, PA, living at 3633 North Sydenham St. in 1900,
3619 North Smedley St. in 1910 and 1920, and at 3972 Germantown Ave. in
1930. A niece, Lula Minor, 23, was
living with them in 1920. He was a
laborer in 1900, and after that a foreman for the street railway (later called
the rapid transit company). Lula
was a restaurant overseer in 1930.

son of Bural Graves and Henrietta ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
about 1888. (See genealogy 455 for
more information about that family.)
He was born 4 March 1865 in NC, and died 12 March 1941. They were buried in Graves Chapel
Baptist Church Cem., Anderson, Caswell Co., NC. He believed in a father-dominated family with the wife and
daughters being subservient. The
sons provided the labor for their father's farm operation and later became
business partners in his sawmill operation. The strong religious influence in the family may have led
two of the sons, Gabriel and Henry, to become ministers. They both were active in leadership
roles in Graves Chapel Baptist Church, as was their father Marshall. They were in the 1900 census for
Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. They

John J. Graves (29)
was born 6 Oct. 1886 (or 1892[14])
in NC, and died in Jan. 1969 according to the SSDI; his last residence was Jersey City, Hudson Co., NJ. He married Coralizia Cole, daughter of
Roland Cole and Emma ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born in May 1895 in NJ, and
died after 1940. He acquired all
the schooling he could get in Caswell Co., NC, and graduated from Shaw
University in Raleigh, NC around 1904-1905. He taught school in NC for a while and later migrated to NJ
where he also taught. All three of
his children graduated from Shaw University, and his daughter taught in Caswell
Co. for a while before returning to New Jersey. For the rest of his life Johnny donated at least $100 per
year to Shaw Univ. This family was
recorded on the 1920-1940 censuses in Jersey City, NJ; their children were born

He was licensed to preach in 1924 and ordained in 1933. He preached regularly at Sellars School
in the early days of his ministry.
He began to pastor the Olive Grove Baptist Church in 1948. This family was recorded on the 1930

[1] The 1870 census gives his age as 53 (b.c. 1817) and the 1880 census gives it as 60 (b.c. 1820).
[2] R‑1 said she was born about 1800, and R‑2 said she was born in 1797. However, the 1870 census gives her age as 50 (b.c. 1820), the 1880 census gives her age as 63 (b.c. 1817), and the 1900 census says she was born in July 1816.
[3] She was said to have died at 113 years of age. However, if the census records are correct, she was probably 93-96 when she died.
[4] She was listed on son PinkneyÕs death certificate.
