DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL GRAVES AND PHOEBE HULL
OF CT AND MA
GENERATION 1
Samuel Graves (1) was born about 1717-18, possibly in Killingworth, Middlesex Co., Conn., and died intestate on 22 Aug. 1794 in Lee, Berkshire Co., Mass. He married Phoebe Hull, daughter of George Hull and Phoebe Rutty, on 14 Jan. 1746 in Killingworth. She was born 29 June 1726 in Killingworth, and died about 1795-6 in Lee, Mass.
According to The Rhodes Family in America: "No family records giving the ancestry of Samuel Graves have been found. John Card Graves states that he was born about 1733, son of Jonathan4 (Richard3, Joseph2, Thomas1) Graves; of Tyringham, Mass. 1767; out with Minute Men in Capt. Wm. King's Co., in April 1775; rem. Lee, Mass. where Letters of Adm. were granted on his estate to son Jonathan 5 Feb. 1795; land set off to widow Phoebe, son Jonathan, dau. Hannah, wife of John Rhodes, etc.; dau. Phoebe, wife of Noah Taylor, d. before her father; mss. entitled Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of Charlestown, Mass. and Family, p. 19 (Buffalo & Erie Co. Public Library, Grosvenor Ref. Div., Buffalo, N.Y.). The foregoing record contains errors. Samuel Graves, d. Lee, Mass. on 22 Aug. 1794. If aged 76 at time of death (as recorded), he must have been born in 1717 or 1718, and it seems improbable that he was a son of Jonathan4 Graves (1701- 1743) of Sudbury, Mass. Phoebe, dau. of Samuel and wife of Noah Taylor lived in Cazenovia, N.Y. on 15 Feb. 1800 (when she exec. deed to John Rhodes) and therefore did not die before her father.
Samuel and Phoebe Graves were of Guilford, New Haven Co., Conn. until 1760, removed in that year to Salisbury, Litchfield, Conn. Samuel Graves purchased land of Ebenezer Stevens of Salisbury on 10 April 1760; witnesses John Hutchinson and Nathaniel Everts; (Salisbury Land Records, vol. 3, p. 607). He sold land in Salisbury on 15 Aug. 1763 to Nathaniel Buell, and on 6 March 1764 to Asa (Asahel) Burnham; (vol. 3, p. 777 & vol. 4, p. 42); rem. Tyringham, Mass. in 1764 where he purchased land from Asa Burnham on 6 March 1764; witnesses Thomas Orton and John Hutchinson; (Pittsfield, Mass. Land Records, vol. 4, p. 335). John Pitts of Tyngsboro, Middlesex Co., Mass., Samuel Pitts of Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., Mass. & Jonathan Warner of Portsmouth, Rockingham Co., N.H. sold 80 acres in Lee, Mass. to Samuel Graves of Tyringham on 13 Feb. 1790, land known as the Griffis farm, consideration 284 lb.; witnesses Nathaniel Green, J. P. and John Godbold; (vol. 34, p. 846). Samuel and Phoebe Graves of Tyringham, Mass. (for valuable consideration) sold land in Killingworth, Conn. on 29 Oct. 1790 to John Lane, Jr. of Killingworth - land bounded by said Lane's land, Israel Burr and David Kelsey; witnesses Jonathan Graves and Anne Graves; (Killingworth, Middlesex Co., Conn. Land Records, vol. 14, p. 381). Samuel Graves and son Jonathan Graves, both of Lee, Mass., sold land on 10 Oct. 1793 to Barnabas Bidwell of Stockbridge, Mass., land lying in Lee with that of Barnabas Bidwell (quitclaim to establish boundary); witnesses Jahleel Woodbridge and Billy Woodbridge; (Pittsfield, Mass. Land Records, vol. 33, p. 305).
Joseph Wyllys, William Ingersoll, Jr. and Sylvanus Hulet of Lee were appointed appraisers of estate of Samuel Graves by Jahleel Woodbridge, Judge of Probate, on 5 Feb. 1795; inventory made by Joseph Wyllys and William Ingersoll. Letters of Administration granted son Jonathan Graves on 5 Feb. 1795 and land was set off to his widow Phoebe, son Jonathan, and daughter Hannah, wife of John Rhodes; aforesaid land being westerly half of farm known as the Griffis farm.
Samuel Graves served in the American Revolution; 'Private, Capt. William King's Co. of Minutemen, Col. John Fellow's Regt., which marched 21 April 1775, in response to the alarm of 19 April 1775, service 1 mo., 4 da.; also (late) Capt. George King's Co., Col. Benjamin Simond's detachment of Berkshire Co. Militia, enlisted 16 Dec. 1776, discharged 24 March 1777, service 98 days, company marched to Ticonderoga; also, same Co. and detachment, muster roll dated Ticonderoga 25 Feb. 1777, enlistment to expire 15 March 1777; also, Sergeant, Capt. Noah Lankton's (Langdon's) Co., Col. John Ashley's (1st Berkshire Co.) Regt., entered service 8 July 1777, discharged 14 Aug. 1777, service, 1 mo. 8 da., Company marched to Kingsbury by order of Brig. Gen. John Fellows, roll dated Tyringham'; (Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Rev., vol. 6, p. 757)."
The ancestry of Samuel Graves has not been definitely established. The discussion on Lester Graves (generation 3) indicates that Samuel might be descended from immigrant Thomas Graves of Hartford, Conn. and Hatfield, Mass., or that he might have been born in England. The discussion on Samuel Graves (generation 1) indicates he might be descended from immigrant Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of Charlestown, Mass.
Another possibility is that Samuel was descended from immigrant Deacon George Graves of Hartford, Conn. The Graves Family Newsletter, p. 26, 1978, states in regard to The Rhodes Family in America: "It is interesting to note in this book that Joseph Hull (b. 10 Aug. 1652, Windsor, Conn., d. June 1694, Killingworth, Conn.) had children George (who married Phoebe Rutty, and was the father of Phoebe who married Samuel Graves), and Cornelius (who married Mehitable Graves, daughter of John Graves and Elizabeth Stillwell of Guilford, Conn.). This is an error. Mehitable was a daughter of Lieut. John Graves and Elizabeth Foote. Lieut. John was a son of Capt. John Graves and Elizabeth Stillwell. Since Capt. John Graves was a son of Deacon George Graves of Hartford, Conn., and many of Deacon George Graves' descendants lived in Guilford, Samuel Graves may well be descended from Deacon George also." (R-200)

They lived in Tyringham, moved to Westmoreland, N.Y. in 1790, and then moved to Cazenovia, N.Y. in 1792, where he was still living in 1835. The History of Cazenovia states that "Mrs. Noah Taylor was the first white woman in Cazenovia, and mother of the second child born there."
According to The Rhodes Family in America: "In a lengthy deposition made before the Court of Common Pleas of Madison Co., N.Y. on 6 Feb. 1835, Noah Taylor declared he was born in Coventry, Windham Co., Conn., 2 June 1760 (Vital Records give 14 June 1758); res. in Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Mass. during the Rev. War, where he entered service each time as a volunteer; moved from there to Westmoreland, Oneida Co., N.Y., where he lived two years; then moved to Cazenovia, Madison Co., N.Y., where he had lived ever since, (42 y.); that he had received written discharges, but that they were burned with his house and furniture the second year after he moved to Cazenovia; that his name was not on the Pension Roll of any state; that he was known to Marvel Wellerwood, Elisha Gage, Perry G. Childs, Esq., Charles Stebbins, Esq., and many others who could testify as to his veracity. The sworn statement of Noah Taylor, resident of Cazenovia, N.Y., aged 74 years and upwards, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed 7 June 1832" was included in the abovementioned book. He first married Sophia Ransford (or Raynsford) on 20 Feb. 1817. She was born 6 Jan. 1794 in Conn., and died 28 Feb. 1863 in Perrysburg, N.Y. In 1820 they lived in Covington, Genessee Co., N.Y. (according to the census). They moved to Perrysburg about 1826, and were listed there in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses. Lester secondly married widow Almeda Cooper, who died 25 Feb. 1877. His second and third children were born in Genessee Co., N.Y., and the last two in Cattaraugus Co., N.Y.
It is possible that Rebecca Brace was a sister of Lester Graves. She was born about 1796 in Mass. Her parents were born in England. She is listed as aunt to Charles F., fourth (?) child of Lester and Sophia.
