DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GRAVES AND CATHERINE STRINGFELLOW

OF STAFFORD CO., VA

GENERATION 1

Joseph Graves (1) was probably born about 1770 (between 1765 and 1784) and probably died before 1830.  He was listed in the 1810 census for Stafford Co., VA, but was not in the 1820 census for that county.  He married Catherine (or Katherine) Stringfellow, daughter of James Stringfellow and Susannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  A Catherine Graves was listed as head of household in the 1830 census for Stafford Co., VA, and the members of the household match those in the 1810 census.  She was born 8 Oct. 1777 in Culpeper Co., VA.  The following children have not been proven, but they all have Stafford Co., VA connections, their migration paths are similar, and their dates of birth match well.  Also many of the names in the families of these children are similar.  (R‑1, R‑6)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JOSEPH GRAVES (1) AND CATHERINE ‑‑‑‑‑‑

George W. Graves (2) was born 6 March 1807 in VA, and died 26 Nov. 1882 in Gilmer, Upshur Co., Texas.  A letter dated 22 June 1884 states that his wife Louisa is trying to sell her place there in Upshur Co.  He married Louisa Johnson on 17 Aug. 1837 in Talladega Co., AL.  She was born 16 Oct. 1823 in TN or AL (census records differ), and died 20 Dec. 1886 in Upshur Co., TX. They were both buried in Concord Cem., Upshur Co., Texas. They were listed in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Talladega Co., AL censuses, and in the 1880 Upshur Co., TX census.  All their children were born in AL except for Louis, who was born in LA as his parents were on their way to Texas.  (R‑2)

  8.  Benjamin F. Graves, b. 1844.  He was in the 1870 census at Fort Coucho, Bexar Co., TX, listed as Sergeant, Co. B, 4th Cavalry.  He hasn’t been found in later censuses.

  9.  Elizabeth J. Graves, b. 1846.

  10.  John W. Graves, b. 1849.

  11.  George A. Graves, b. 1850.

  12.  Sue (maybe Susan) Graves, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Barnwell.

  13.  Charles P. Graves, b. Jan. 1856.  He was in the 1900 census for Upshur Co., TX, farmer, still single, with his widowed sister Sallie and her family living with him.

Susan Alexander Graves (3) was born 16 March 1810 in Virginia, and died 21 Nov. 1887 in Hopkins Co., Texas, aged 77 years, 8 months, 5 days (Bible record).  She married E. (Elijah?) Alexander Payne about 1828 in Va., probably Stafford Co.  He was born about 1799 in Va., and died 24 July 1874, at age 75 (Bible record).  The Payne ancestor came to Va. in 1619 and soon owned 1500 acres on Occuquan, now Prince William Co. (formed from Stafford Co.).  Their first three children were born in Stafford Co., Va., and the later children were born in Ala.

The 1880 census indicates that both Susan's father and mother were also born in Va.  Mrs. Coleman suspects that Susan was a daughter of Catherine Graves who was listed on the 1830 Stafford Co., Va. census as age 50 to 60. Also, early in 1979, Mrs. Coleman finally found Susan's family Bible, and it is the source of some of the information on Susan's descendants.  (R‑1)

  21.  Elijah Alexander Payne, b. 3 Feb. 1838 (Talladega Co., Ala.), d. 2 March 1866.  CSA records show that he enlisted 2 June 1861 at Corinth, MS, in Co. G (was L and sometimes M), 6th Ala. Regt.  Payroll records from Sangster Cross Roads, MS, Union Mills, VA, and Camp Terrell, VA.  Discharged 8 March 1864.  He is not listed on the 1860 Dallas Co., AL census, and probably moved to MS with his sister Margaret Catherine and husband Francis J. Dumas.  Apparently he never married, as his birth and death dates were listed in the Bible, but no marriage date.

Monroe, supporting the supposition that Mary Jane was his sister.  Information on this family and that of Mary Jane Graves is apparently found in Spivey Family & Allied Lines by Mrs. G.H.L. Dunagin.  His widow was in the 1870 census for Beat 4, Neshoba Co., MS, Philadelphia P.O., with children Thomas, Joseph, Mattie, and William.  They were farmers.  (R‑4)
