Rev. 3 Oct. 2012, Gen. 37

DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ------

OF ABBEVILLE CO., SC & FRANKLIN CO., TN

GENERATION 1

William Graves (1) was born about 1750, and died in 1805 or 1808 in Franklin Co., TN.  He may have been a son of a John Graves of Orange Co., N.C.  There was a William Graves orphaned in Orange Co., N.C. by a John Graves. This William was the same age as the one later found in the 1790 census of Abbeville Dist., S.C., with 3 free white males under 16, and two free white females.

William moved to TN about 1804, according to the obituary of his son, John R. Graves.  The will of William Graves (presumed to be the same William) listed only one child by name, Jacob, with his wife Elizabeth as his executor (Will Book vol. 102, 1808-1876, Franklin Co., TN).  Evidence that John R. Graves was his son was obtained from John's tombstone in Cobb/Love Cem.  (Note that this cemetery is referred to both as Cobb Cem. and as Love Cem.  In this genealogy, the name Cobb/Love Cem. will be used.)

It had previously been believed that it is possible that this William Graves was a son of John Graves (Johann Sebastian Graff), since there is a tradition of German ancestry in some parts of the family and there is some name similarity with that family.  However, if this William Graves was the one orphaned in Orange Co., NC, it is unlikely he is the one who was a son of Johann Graff, since that John Graves died in 1804, and a person whose father dies when he is age 54 is not normally considered an orphan.  As of April 30, 2002, DNA test results proved that the part of this family descended from William Graves through his son Jacob Graves was not descended from Johann Sebastian Graff, and may have descended from or been related to Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (genealogy 169).

A good discussion of the early generations of this family can be found in the article "William Graves of South Carolina and Tennessee and His Descendants" by Theron L. Smith, Graves Family Newsletter, pp. 29-35, 1986.  (R‑1, R‑3, R‑7, R‑11)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)

Jacob Graves (2) was born 1 Jan. 1783 in North Carolina (or possibly SC), died 9 March 1875 in Tippah Co., MS, and was buried in Shelby Creek Cem., on the Tippah Co.-Benton Co. line.  He was a farmer and lived in Saulsbury, Tippah Co.  He was in the 1840 Hardeman Co., TN census, and in Tippah Co. in 1860 and 1870.  His full name may have been Jacob Thomas Graves.

He moved through TN and arrived in Tippah Co., MS in 1854.  He bought land from Zadock Brewer and John Hopkins in 1858.

In the Tippah Co. Courthouse, Ripley, MS, is a probate packet titled "Thomas Graves, Dec.", but all papers included in it refer to Jacob Graves, Dec.  An original document in it states: "Graves, Jacob (PR480), original bill 12 Sept. 1879.  Jacob Graves of Benton Co. died 1876, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and the following heirs: (a) W. C. Graves, a son, (b) J. E. Graves, a son, (c) F. M. Graves, a son, (d) H. L. At the time of the 1820 Franklin Co., TN census, Jacob Graves was a widower with 7 children.  (R‑2, R‑7, R‑8, R‑9, R‑10, R‑11)

John R. Graves (6) was born 3 Sept. 1791 in Abbeville Dist., SC, and died 22 May 1859 in Madison Co., TN.  He came as a young man of fourteen with an ox-drawn wagon train from SC, made up of pioneers from NC and SC. The Noes, Cobbs, Kelleys, Watsons, Harrisons, and Freemans were some of the families that traveled with the Graves family.  He married Agness Noe on 17 (or 11) Sept. 1811.  She was born 14 Jan. 1797 in TN (possibly either Franklin Co. or Lincoln Co.), and died 18 July 1865.  John received a land grant in Franklin Co., TN, in 1825, and two in Lincoln Co., TN, in 1832.  It would be reasonable to assume they lived in each of these counties.  They then moved to Madison Co., TN, about 1828.  Some of the family later migrated to Lauderdale Co., TN.  Both John and Agness were buried in the old Cobb/Love Cem. near Medon, TN, below Jackson, TN.  Their tombstones are standing today.  A descendant of James Kelley married to Samantha Graves used to tend the family graveyard, but it gets no regular care now.

The following obituary of John R. Graves appeared in the Memphis, Arkansas and Ouachita Christian Advocate for June 9, 1859, and was written by J. A. Vincent.  "John R. Graves was born in Abbeville District, S.C., Sept. 3, 1791, and died in Madison Co., TN, May 22, 1859. Brother Graves came with his parents to Middle Tennessee in 1804, where he, in Sept. 1811, was united in marriage to Miss Agness Noe, moved to Madison Co., TN, some twenty or thirty years since.  Brother Graves was baptized by Rev. Learner Blackman, July 22, 1811, and joined the Church as a seeker, August 1st of the same year, and was converted to God at a prayed meeting on the same night.  He was no meager, dwarfish Christian, but was a warm-hearted, earnest Christian.  He loved God and loved the Church.  He had a noble soul and endeavored to promote the interest of the Church in every way possible. He had served the Church as exhorter, leader, and steward for a number of years with fidelity and usefulness.  He was an ardent, earnest man; what he did, he did with all his might.  It was my privilege to see him repeatedly during the last winter and spring.  I always found him in a happy frame of mind.  His disease was dropsy[2].  He had suffered much for the last eighteen months or two years, but was resigned and patiently bore his afflictions.  He often spoke of his approaching dissolution, with that confidence in the truth and power of our holy religion that only characterizes the true Christian.  He was ready.  He was a noble man, and the Church has lost a useful member.  His family are bereaved indeed, and the community has lost a valuable citizen.  He leaves a wife, some eight children to mourn, and they mourn as those bereaved.  May the blessing of the Most High rest upon them."  (R‑1, R‑3, R‑11)

The following is from A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region by Goodspeed, late 1880Õs.

ÒThomas Graves

This gentlemen is one of those thrifty and energetic farmers of which Searcy County has become well known, and in the conduct of his affairs has shown good judgement and business foresight. He is a native of Tennessee, born 27 September 1827, a son of Jacob and Mary (Counts) Graves, who were born in Connecticut and North Carolina, respectively, but were early residents of Tennessee, from which state the mother was called from life, the fatherÕs death occurring in Mississippi some time after the war, when nearly one hundred years old. He was a farmer and blacksmith by occupation, and a participant in one of the Indian wars under General Jackson. His father, William Graves, was a soldier of the Revolution and was of Irish descent. The maternal grandfather of the  subject of this sketch, John Counts, was of German extraction and also served in the Colonial Army during the Revolution. The subject of this sketch was one of twelve children born to his parents, four of whom are living at this time, and he is the only one of the family who came to this part of the state. He and three brothers, John, William and Jacob, served in the Union Army during the Civil War and were brave and faithful soldiers to the cause they espoused. The early days of  Thomas Graves were spent in Tennessee and Mississippi, and unfortunately he received only a small amount of schooling. In 1849 he became a resident of Arkansas and located in Yell County on the Arkansas River. From that section he enlisted in the Third Arkansas Cavalry of Volunteers, under Col. Lyon, and during the eighteen months that he was in the service he fought some hard battles, and was wounded near Dardnelle, on the Arkansas River, by a gunshot, which so undermined his constitution that he has never enjoyed good health since. He was wounded three time in the same fight. After the war he returned to Yell County, but in 1874 he came to Searcy County, and here he has become a well-known and well to do citizen. He is the owner of 320 acres of fine farming land on Bear Creek, the result of his own foresight, good management and energy, and he has always interested himself in anything to the benefit of his section. His farm is situated ten miles from the town of Marshall and that place is his post office address. He was married in Yell County to Miss Eliza Englebright, a daughter of John J and Mary (Stinnett) Englebright, who were of English and Irish descent respectively, the former being a native of the Hoosier state and a son of John J Englebright. The Englebrights were early settlers of Yell County and the grandfather died there in 1849, his son John also passing from there in 1888. Mrs Englebright was born in Georgia and was a daughter of Maj. Henry Stinnett. Mrs Stinnett was one of eleven children born to her parents, four of whom are living at this time. Mrs. Graves was born 18 January 1837 in Yell County AR, where she obtained a good education in the common schools. In 1857 her union with Mr. Graves was consummated, and they have long been connected with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They have no family.Ó  (R‑5)

George Washington Graves (24) was born 19 Sept. 1829 in AL.  He first married Martha Ann Hopper.  He married second Sarah Rebecca James.  He and his second wife were in the 1880 census for Scott Twp., Poinsett Co., AR, page 485C.  He was a farmer.  Both his children were born in AR, and both were probably by his first marriage.  (R‑2)

Elizabeth Graves (35) was born 27 Aug. 1820 in Franklin Co., TN, died 18 Oct. 1870, and was buried in Cobb/Love Cem., near Medon, TN, in Madison Co.  She married James Harrison, son of John Harrison.  He was born about 1818 in NC.

James Harrison was granted letters of administration for the estate of his deceased father, John Harrison, in the March term, 1846, of Madison Co., TN Court, as well as guardianship of minors of John Harrison, viz., Andrew J., Robert T., Sarah J., Francis M., Charles L., and Thomas J. L./C. Harrison, in the August term, 1847, of the County Court.

According to the Federal Census records of 1850 and 1860 of Madison Co., TN, Civil District 2, with the post office at Medon, TN, James Harrison, a wagon/carriage maker, and Elizabeth, his wife, had children: John T., William F. (or H.?), Sarah E., James A., Agnes M., and Margaret.  In 1870 the Madison Co., TN, census of the 2nd Dist., post office Medon, TN, showed James Harrison, a miller, with wife E., and children named only by initials of A., a 22 yr. old male, A., an 18 yr. old male, M., 23 yr. old male, J., 20 yr. old female, and F., 24 yr. old male.  All were born in TN.

James Harrison may have married a second time after Elizabeth's death, since the 1880 census for Gibson Co., TN, Civil Dist. 24, lists a James Harrison, miller, at the right age, b. NC, whose wife, Minerva, is 48, born in TN.  In this household no. 31, p. 374-B of the census, are also Margaret Griffey, dau., age 28, b. TN, father b. in NC, and mother in TN.  Others listed are Charles Griffey, 6, grandson, b. TN; Johnnie Griffy, 1, granddau., b. TN; and Margaret Reed, 62, sister-in-law, b. TN.

This seems to indicate that James secondly married Minerva ‑‑‑‑‑‑, who was born about 1832 in TN, and he moved to Gibson Co., TN.  Living next door in 1880 was a James Harrison, age 36, miller, b. TN (whose father was b. NC, and mother b. TN), his wife Fannie, and their 3 children Alice, age 10, Phillip, age 5, and Duncan, age 4.  (R‑11)
