GENERATION 1

The father (1) of Amelia and Judith Graves may have been Rice Graves of genealogy 270, but that is not at all certain. Rice Graves was born about 1729 in St. George Parish, Spotsylvania Co., VA, and died in 1814 in Louisa Co., VA. He married Jane Young, daughter of John Young and Christian Bruce, about 1751-2. On the marriage record for ‘Milley’ Graves and William Abney, her mother ‘Gean’ Graves gave consent for the marriage. However, Rice Graves was still alive and would have been the more likely person to give his consent. Neither of these daughters has been added to this family.

In 1806 (Louisa Rec., Deed Book K, p. 253), describing himself as old and infirm, Rice Graves appointed his son John to act as trustee in an equal division of his property among his children. The division listed all his children, but did not mention Amelia of Judith.

Therefore, the parents of Amelia and Judith Graves are not presently known. It is also very possible that Amelia and Judith were not sisters, especially since Amelia’s daughter Mary married Judith’s son Wallis.

She married second William Abney, widower of her sister Amelia, in 1811 in Estill Co., KY. He was born in 1757 in Albemarle Co., VA, died 31 Jan. 1845, and was buried in Johnetta Cem., Rockcastle Co., KY. (R‑1)

Wallis J. Clark (13) was born 11 Feb. 1802 in Madison Co., KY, and died 5 Aug. 1875 in Brush Creek, Rockcastle Co., KY. Rockcastle County Vital Statistics gives Joseph and Julia Clark as the parents of Wallis Clark, Sr. Wallis Clark, Sr., was bonded out to Jacob and Frederick Miller to learn all the common arts and miseries of the hatting business, according to July Court, 1815, page 163, Madison Co., KY. He first married Mary Abney, daughter of William Abney and Amelia Graves. She was born 25 March 1801 in KY, and died 10 April 1851 in Rockcastle Co., KY. He married second Elizabeth Hardin in 1853 in Rockcastle Co., KY. Both Wallis J. Clark and Mary Abney were buried in Johnetta Cem., Rockcastle Co., KY. GENERATION 4

CHILDREN OF WALLIS J. CLARK (13) AND MARY ABNEY

James Y. Clark (14) was born 28 Oct. 1822 and died 31 Oct. 1868, both in Climax, Rockcastle Co., KY. He was buried in King/Clark Cem. He married Sarah Sammons. She was born in 1824 in KY.

James Y. Clark was the leader of the Ku Klux Klan in the area, and on October 3, 1868 led a raid to "scare" James Langford. They were to leave switches on Langford's porch to indicate that they would return and "switch" him if he did not get rid of the woman he was living with, but not married to. Langford shot James Y. Clark through the door and he died as a result. The bill for the doctor's visit that night was $7.00. The account of his burial expenses totaled $14.60.

A law suit was filed to settle the estate and the land was divided into 5 tracts. Tract 1 included the Salt Peter Cave, was sold to Granville C. Clark and William Clark. Tract 2 was 25 acres. Tract 3 was 15 and 3/4 acres, with 1 acre taken out for a school. Tract 4 was 51 acres and Tract 5 was known as the "Polly" place. 1: 1845, 125 acres on Brush Creek. 3: 1848, 150 acres, 2 horses & 5 head of cattle. 4: 1855, Deed Book 12, p. 325: 315 acres across Brush Creek & 30 acres Crooked Creek. 5: March 27, 1866, Deed Book J, p. 329: Court seals to James land on Clear Creek for $150.00. 7: March 09, 1867, Deed Book K, p. 494, James bought land on Bruch Creek from the Barnabas Haley heirs for $81.00.

Sarah Ann Clark (16) was born about 1825 and died after 1850, both in Rockcastle Co., KY. She married Brightberry Gentry Chasteen. He was born 11 Jan. 1819 in Madison Co., KY, and died 17 Aug. 1884 in Rockcastle Co., KY. They were in the 1850 census for Northern District, Rockcastle Co., KY. She must have died 1850-1854[1], since he was listed in the 1860 census for Rockcastle Co., KY, with wife Julia Ann, born about 1835 in KY, and 4 young children, born 1855-1860. He married third Eliza A. Branaman on 17 Jan. 1864 in Rockcastle Co., KY. She was born about 1837 in KY. He was a farmer. All the children of Sarah and Brightberry were born in Clear Creek, Rockcastle Co., KY. (R‑1)

He married Mary Ann Taylor on 27 July 1860 in Rockcastle Co., KY. She was born in 1838 in Rockcastle Co., KY, died 10 July 1916 in Ardmore, OK, and was buried in Rose Hill Cem. Nancy Clark (23) was born in 1841 in Rockcastle Co., KY, and died 20 June 1905 in Odessa, Washita Co., OK (no longer in existence). She married James Carpenter Broughton on 11 July 1857 in Rockcastle Co., KY. He died 17 Oct. 1899 in Odessa, Washita Co., OK.

This family left Kentucky by 1880, moved to Hood Co., TX, then onto Odessa, TX sometime between 1880 and 1894. Then they moved to Oklahoma before August 15, 1894 (near Mountain View and Cloud Chief). Odessa, OK had a Post Office from August 15, 1894 to December 31, 1901.

All their children (with the possible exception of the last) were born in Rockcastle Co., KY. (R‑1)
