DESCENDANTS OF LEWIS M. GRAVES AND SUSAN CATHERINE BARLOW OF DELAWARE

GENERATION 1

Lewis M. Graves (1) was born about 1830 in CT or DE, and may have died before 1880. He married Susan Catherine Barlow. She was born about 1839 in DE. She married second William E. Duhadway. It is not known whether Lewis died or whether they divorced. Lewis and Susan were in the 1860 census for Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle Co., DE, where he was listed as born in CT, and a butcher. The 1870 census for Washington, Ward 2, Washington, DC, listed Lewis, 40, Bailiff in Superior Court D.C., apparently living by himself in a rooming house. The 1880 census for Blackbird Twp., New Castle Co., DE showed Susan as the wife of William E. Duhadway, with her son William Edward Graves living with them. Nearby was her son Lewis, 21, living with Charles B. Warren, and working on his farm.

Because of their living in Delaware and some of the names, it seems possible that this Graves family is descended from the Quaker family of Thomas Graves of New Castle Co., Delaware (gen. 85). However, it is also possible that Lewis was descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (gen. 166). The 1850 census for Southwark, Ward 3, Philadelphia Co., PA, listed Elizabeth Graves (or Groves), 44, DE, with children Lewis, 22, John, 20, Jonathan, 10, William, 8, and Rebecca, 5, all children born in PA. Genealogy 166 has an Elizabeth who was the wife of a Lewis Graves, b. 28 Dec. 1781, VT, d. 1870, NY. This Lewis and Elizabeth Graves had a youngest son named Lewis M. Graves, born 9 Sept. 1828. GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF LEWIS GRAVES (1) AND SUSAN C. BARLOW

William Edward Graves (3) was born in Aug. 1864 in DE. He married Frances Green about 1894. She was born in Oct. 1872 in DE. They moved from Townsend, New Castle Co., DE, to Lewes, Sussex Co., DE, in the early 1900's. They were in the 1900 census for Appoinimink, New Castle Co., DE, when he was a grocer, and 3 of their 4 children were living. They were in the 1910 census for Townsend, New Castle Co., DE, when he was a foreman in an overall factory, and 6 of their 10 children were living. (R‑1, R‑2)
