Humphrey Isaac Greaves (1) is said to have been born in England, possibly as early as 1745. He came to America and settled in what is now North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War, in which he is said to have been a soldier. He probably had more than the one child listed below. The source for this is the 1938 book by John William Asbury Graves. Although substantiating evidence has not yet been found, neither has anything been found to prove otherwise.

The Graves coat of arms shown here was included in the book by John William Asbury Graves. If it is one that was handed down through the family (rather than one that he found in a publication), then it may be a clue to the ancestry of the family.

Since no proof for the statements of birth in England and arrival in America is known, there is the possibility that Humphrey Isaac Greaves did not migrate directly from England to NC. One possibility is that he was part of the Quaker family descended from Thomas Graves of New Castle Co., Delaware. A great-grandson of this Thomas Graves was a William Graves, born in 1737, who married Emey Mode, daughter of Alexander Mode and Rebecca Allen, in 1767 in Chester Co., PA. They moved to NC. Many descendants of this Quaker Graves family moved to Indiana after the Revolution.

Note, in this genealogy, that a grandson of Humphrey Isaac Greaves was William M. (possibly Mode) Greaves, and a great-grandson was named William Mode Graves.

The name of the wife of Humphrey Isaac Greaves is not known. Mrs. Botkin speculates that maybe she was a Mode cousin, or even a sister of Emey Mode. Perhaps Humphrey Greaves and his wife moved to NC with or at the same time as William Graves and his wife, Emey Mode.

Mr. Chandler Eavenson (R-7) sent the following information. It seems likely that at least some of the people mentioned are related to the family of Humphrey Isaac Greaves, since the name Humphrey is not a common one. Since Wilkes Co., Richmond Co., Elbert Co., Columbia Co., Franklin Co., and Augusta are all on the border with SC, it may be that this family lived on the eastern side of the Savannah River in SC also, and they may have migrated south from the western part of NC.

CHILDREN OF HUMPHREY ISAAC GREAVES (1)

Humphrey Isaac Greaves (2), called Isaac, was born 19 Jan. 1770 in North Carolina, and died about 1826 in Bartholomew Co., Indiana. He was buried in Hawpatch Cem., north of Columbus, IN. He probably had brothers and sisters. His being named for his father could mean he was the first son born.

He married Jane Baker about 1795. She is said to have been of English ancestry, was born 1 March 1776 in NC, died 17 May 1872 in Indiana at age 96, and was also buried in Hawpatch Cem. She lived many years after Isaac passed on.

There is a story about Jane Baker when she was a very small child. It is said that during the intensely severe winter when the soldiers of Washington's army were suffering from lack of clothing, some of them came to her father's home, gently lifted her from the bed, emptied the straw from the tick on which she was sleeping into a pile in one corner of the room, placed little Jane Baker on the pile of straw, then took the empty tick and made it into clothing for their protection from the cold.

Isaac and family moved from NC to Zanesville, Muskingum Co., Ohio in 1800, and then moved to Bartholomew Co., IN in 1824. The family belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church.

During the War for Independence, this land was won for Americans by George Rogers Clark and became the New Territory of the new country of the United States of America. Settlers, many of them veterans of the war, moved into the territory from the northeast and the southeast. Isaac and Jane settled in the Territory period and remained in Ohio about 24 years. Ohio became a state, and the Greaves family grew until they numbered ten children. (Only 8 of them are known, starting with the third child. The first two children may have died, or they may have been married and established in Ohio when the Greaves family migrated to Indiana in 1824.)

Isaac and Jane left Ohio in 1824 with at least 8 of their children and resettled farther west in Bartholomew Co., Indiana. The county seat of Columbus had been platted in 1821. Indiana became a state in 1816, and was rapidly being settled. The southern half of Indiana was well settled with a large population before the northern half was opened to settlers wanting to purchase land. Bartholomew Co. had much to offer newcomers, especially those wanting to farm. It has always been agricultural country, rich and productive land. A man's children would have many economic opportunities. Columbus also developed an industrial reputation.

Most of the descendants of Isaac and Jane had the pioneer spirit, and when the new west beckoned in the 1850's many of them moved beyond the Mississippi River.

Isaac and Jane may have had relatives from the Baker family who moved along with them into Ohio and then Indiana. The Baker family hasn't been researched yet, but it would not be surprising to find a connection with the Bakers of Bartholomew Co.

The spelling of the name seems to have changed from Greaves to Graves during the third generation. It was probably up to the individual, and people may have changed the name at different times. This was probably part of the trend to simplify and Americanize everything. (R-4, R-200)

Nathan Greaves (3) was born 19 Jan. 1799 in NC, died 3 May 1873, and was buried about 1 mile southeast of Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. He first married Katherine Waters on 22 Jan. 1821 in Ohio. She was born 4 June 1804 and died 2 Sept. 1845. He secondly married Mary Elizabeth Soper in 1846 in Indiana. She was born in 1826 and died 12 Oct. 1850. He thirdly married Minerva Hobbs on 25 Feb. 1851 in Indiana.

Nathan was an honest, upright man, and abhorred deception in his fellow man. He was well-known and respected by the community at large, and left a character that his descendants may well feel proud of. He was a lifelong member of the M. E. Church, and died in his 75th year, the result of a paralytic stroke when yet in robust health. He owned a farm of 440 acres of first class land east of the town of Columbus, IN, which was later largely included in the city. Garland Brook Cem. is also on the farm land. (R-200)

William M. Greaves or Graves (4) was born 23 Dec. 1800 in Ohio, the year his parents settled in Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH, and died 23 Dec. 1875. His middle name may have been Mode. He was about 24 years old when he moved to Indiana with his parents, brothers and sisters. He was a carpenter, according to the census records. William helped to establish and train at least 2 of his sons-in-law in the carpenter trade, and it is said that he and his son-in-law, Edward Stewart, worked together as carpenters.

He married Jane McKibbon on 23 May 1826 in Bartholomew Co., IN. She was born 17 July 1806 in VA, and died 28 Jan. 1884, both dates recorded on her grave marker. They were both buried in the old City Cem., Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. All their children were born in Indiana.

William was one of the few descendants of Humphrey Isaac Graves, Jr. who remained in Bartholomew Co. Many left for the settling of the west about 1855.

The Original and Early Landowners lists made of surviving records establishes the Graves family as living in Bartholomew Co. when they purchased land during the 1830's. William and his family were listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses for Bartholomew Co., and his widow was listed in the 1880 census with her granddaughter Catherine.

Mrs. Botkin said of William, "We do not know for fact anything personal about him, but I feel that the census reveals that he must have been a loving father and a kind man. He must have cared for his daughters, and we know he raised one grandchild, our ancestor Martha Jane Otstot Riddle who moved to Marion County the year before his death." (R-4, R-200)

John Graves (6) was born 25 Sept. 1806 at Zanesville, Ohio Territory (which a few years earlier was part of Va.), and died 26 Oct. 1888. In 1824 he moved with his parents to Indiana, which was admitted to the Union in 1816. Here he met and married Rebecca Newsom, daughter of Willis Newsom and Lydia Cox, on 21 Sept. 1826 near Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN. She was born 28 Feb. 1806 in NC, and died 2 Jan. 1882. They were both buried in the Newbern Cem., west of Newbern, Iowa. In 1853 they moved with their family, except their two oldest sons who had married, to the western part of Monroe Co., Iowa, where John's youngest brother, Humphrey Baker Graves, was living. A year later they moved west and north to a farm in section 32, Dallas Twp., Marion Co., Iowa. In a short time, the sons who had remained in Indiana, one at Elizabeth Town, the other at Azalia, came with their families and located in the same neighborhood, but across the line in Lucas Co. As there was no M. E. Church in the area, John Graves and wife opened their home for church services and called an M. E. preacher. They later organized a Methodist class, and a church was soon built of hewn logs. This was on the same cross street where the frame building was standing in 1937 in Newbern, Iowa. (R-200)

Alexander Tivis Graves (9) was born 8 Dec. 1817 in Ohio, and died 4 Feb. 1900 in Henderson, MO. He married Nancy Axley Evans in Indiana. She was born 8 March 1819, and died 13 July 1897 in Henderson, MO. They were both buried in the Henderson Cem., which is on a high hill just south of Henderson.

Alexander first located on a farm east of Columbus, IN in Bartholomew Co. Later he moved to Henderson, MO, where he engaged in the mercantile business. He was well educated in music, and an excellent singing teacher by note. He was also quite a prominent leader in the various activities of his church. The house which was his home stood in the south part of Henderson, and was still in good condition in 1938. (R-200)

Humphrey Baker Graves (10) was born 2 Oct. 1820 in Ohio, and died in 1897. He was named Humphrey for his father and grandfather, and was named Baker for his mother, Jane Baker. He married Rebecca White in Indiana. She was born 11 Nov. 1825 and died in 1895. They were both buried in the Hillsdale Cem., between Hillsdale and Malvern, Iowa. Soon after their marriage, they moved to the western part of Monroe Co., Iowa, where most of their children were born. Later they moved to Hillsdale, Mills Co., Iowa, in the western part of the state, just west of Malvern. (R-200)

William Mode Graves (14) was born 18 Sept. 1828 in a log cabin on a farm east of Columbus, Indiana, died 26 April 1903, and was buried in City Cem. north of Columbus. He married Mary E. Patram on 3 Oct. 1850. She was born 18 Jan. 1836 in KY, died 7 April 1865, and was buried in City Cem. north of Columbus. He secondly married Mary A. Bergundthal. She was born 29 Jan. 1843 in Ohio, died 20 July 1908, and was buried in City Cem.

After reaching manhood, William secured a home northeast of town, laid out a part of the farm in town lots, and formed what was later known as the Graves Addition to Columbus. He was very prominent in the various activities of the M. E. Church in which he was a leading member. His former residence was spoken of as the Graves home long after his death. (R-200)

Sylvester Melville Graves (20) was born 2 Feb. 1847 in Columbus, IN, died 29 Dec. 1933, and was buried next to his wife in Fairview Cem., Greensburg, KS. He married Lettie Jane Shultz, daughter of Gideon Samuel Schultz and Mary Ann Taylor, on 16 March 1876 in Hope, IN. She was born 7 (or 1) Oct. 1851 in Bartholomew Co., IN, died 27 (or 30) Oct. 1919 in Greensburg, Kiowa Co., KS, and was buried in Fairview Cem., Greensburg, KS.

A while after the Civil War, when people became interested in the westward movement, Sylvester decided to leave Indiana. In the spring of 1883, he left his family and went to Winfield in Cowley Co., Kansas to investigate the possibility of acquiring land. He received favorable reports.

He returned home and chartered a rail car to Winfield, bringing his family and all his earthly possessions. When they arrived in the fall of 1883, to his dismay, all the land had been claimed.

After this disappointment, he bought a tract of land from a man near Rock, Kansas. The family spent the winter there, but Sylvester was not satisfied with the poor quality of the soil and decided to sell.

He went west to Coldwater, KS, a town of tents not yet platted. He was ready to despair after seeing this sandy soil.

Sylvester was looking for black land and learned it was available to the north. Surveyors had plowed a furrow on the range line north of Coldwater, and he followed it 20 miles and took land in what was then Comanche, now Kiowa Co.

The family arrived there in the spring of 1884. Sylvester acquired a quarter section of Osage Indian Preempt Trust Land five miles southwest of the present site of Greensburg, legally described as the N.W. 1/4 of Section 6, Township 29 S., and Range 18 W.

At first a claim shanty was built for temporary housing. Later two houses were brought from Greensburg and joined for a more comfortable home.

Sylvester was very much an Englishman. Letty was German.

He farmed the land and, to supplement his income, he hauled freight by wagon from Kinsley to help supply the Greensburg merchants. He also bred horses, mules, and cattle for sale.

Lettie was a frail woman who was unable to do hard work. She became proficient with leather crafting and made beautiful gloves and other nice leather items. It was a sad day for Sylvester and Oscar when Lettie died 27 Oct. 1919.

Sylvester was an easygoing man whose philosophy was "live and let live." He once served as county commissioner and was always interested in Republican politics.

After his wife's death, his four grandchildren brought him great pleasure. The oldest, Harlan, enjoyed his grandfather's first car bought in 1927. Harlan drove it, since Sylvester, being accustomed to the horse and buggy age, was not mechanically minded.

In his latter years, he enjoyed being at the lumber yard which his son, Oscar, owned. Here he visited with old friends who called him "Ves". He never lost interest in community events and progress.

The following obituary of Lettie Jane Schultz Graves was published at her death in 1919

"Lettie Jane Schultz was born at Hope, Indiana, Oct. 7, 1851 and died in Greensburg, Kansas on Oct. 30, 1919 - age 68 years and 21 days.

She was married to Sylvester Melville Graves at Columbus, Indiana March 16, 1876. To this union was born one child, Oscar Orville.

The family moved to Cowley Co., Kansas in 1883. Later they moved to Greensburg, Kansas in the spring of 1884.

Her husband and son and four grandchildren are here to mourn her departure.

Three sisters and two brothers have preceded her to the other world. There are four sisters and one brother remaining: Mrs. Alice Washburn of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. O. M. Palmer, Indianapolis, Ind.; Miss Charlotte Schultz and Mrs. Clara C. Thompson of Spring Coulee, Alberta, Canada; and Warren E. Schultz of Brant, Alberta, Canada, and a host of friends." (R-5, R-200)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM M. GREAVES (4) AND JANE McKIBBON

Sarah Ann Graves (29), called "Sally" or "Sally Ann" and possibly "Sal", was born about 1827 in Columbus, Bartholomew Co., Indiana. She was raised in Columbus.

When she was 19, she married Joseph Otstot on 19 April 1846 in Bartholomew Co., IN. Joseph seems not to have been honest about himself and divorce was the only answer to a situation probably created by Joseph. They lived together only about 4 months, long enough to conceive one child. Sally was granted a divorce in April 1849. The brief marriage was probably the only time Sally lived away from her parents' home until she married David Fuller on 30 Jan. 1855 in Bartholomew Co., IN. It is possible that Sally and David joined the migration westward soon after marriage. About that time her Graves uncles and cousins were moving from Indiana into Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas.

It is not known whether Sally had other children, where she lived later, and when and where she died. The 1860 census for Bartholomew Co., IN, shows her daughter Martha living with Sally's parents. The 1860 census also lists a Lewdensea Otstot, age 10, living in the same household. It would appear that this was a daughter of Sally also, but, if so, it is not known who the father was. Maybe this was a daughter of Sally's sister, Lydia. (R-4)

Mary ("Polly") Jane Graves (30), possibly generally known as Jane, was born about 1830, probably in Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN, since that is where her parents lived. She died 3 Dec. 1891 at age 61. Her burial place is not known.

At age 21, she married Lewis Sterling on 13 Nov. 1851 in Bartholomew Co., IN. He was born 9 Jan. 1821. His birth place was reported as Bavaria, Germany and France. France is probably incorrectly given in the 1900 census. Birth place for Polly Jane was also incorrectly recorded in that census.

Lewis may also have been know as Louie. His father's given name is not known. His mother's name was Mary Lynn, but Lynn may not have been her maiden name. Lewis and his son Isaac are found living together in Columbus, IN at 914 Third St. in 1900. Lewis died 6 years later on 20 July 1906 at age 86, and was buried in Thompson Cem. (may no longer exist) in Columbus. That may be where Polly Jane was buried. The Thompson Cem. was also the burial place for Polly Jane's uncle, Nathan Graves, and others of his family.

Polly Jane Graves was found in her father's household in the 1850 census. In 1860, she and Lewis and 3 girls who are probably their daughters were listed with them on the census. This family was not found in the 1880 census of Bartholomew Co., but could have been overlooked. Mrs. Botkin did not find any marriage or death records for the children in the WPA index for Bartholomew Co. at the Indiana State Library. No clues or records were found for this family in the indexes of the vital records for Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN.

Lydia was living with her parents in the 1850 census and her married name was not reported. Neither was her sister Sally's married name reported. It is not known whether Lydia was a widow, separated, or divorced.

Lydia secondly married John Smith on 9 March 1853. Her third marriage was to Thomas F. Thompson, date unknown. It is not known whether Lydia was widowed from her second husband, or whether there were any children by any of the marriages. Perhaps the female child, Lewdensea, in the household of William and Jane (McKibbon) Graves that is younger than Martha Otstot in the 1850 and 1860 censuses was a daughter of Lydia and her first husband. Catherine ("Kitty") Greaves (or Graves) (34) was born about 1843, probably in Columbus, Indiana. She married Edward G. Stewart on 21 Aug. 1862 in Bartholomew Co., IN.

In 1870, Catherine and Edward lived in Columbus, IN, next door to Catherine's aunt Mary (Graves) McFall. They had 3 daughters then. In the 1880 census, Catherine was shown as divorced, head of household, with 3 of her 4 daughters and 2 sons with her. The oldest daughter Jennie or Janie was living with her grandmother Jane (McKibbon) Graves.

Catherine seems to have lived all her life in Columbus. She died 20 Jan. 1894, and was buried in City Cem., Columbus, IN.

Edward Stewart was born in 1842 in Pennsylvania. His name is also spelled Stewert and Steward, but Stewart seems to be the way the name was spelled on the gravestones of the family. Edward was a carpenter, and is said to have worked with his father-in-law William M. Graves. If so, he would also have worked with Mrs. Botkin's ancestor, George Walter Riddle, who married Catherine's niece. What searching has been done indicates that Edward probably moved to Indianapolis after the divorce. (R-4, R-200)

She was born 26 April 1833, died 17 Nov. 1910, and was buried in Newbern Cem. He moved to Iowa from Indiana, and located on a farm in Lucas Co., 1-1/4 miles south of the Marion and Lucas Co. line.

J. W. Asbury Graves wrote: "He was an old time leader in song services of the church, when hymn books were printed without music. We well remember when the pastor would announce a selection to sing, that Uncle Isaac would always have a tune in mind that would fit the selection." (R-200)

Willis N. Graves (37) was born 30 Jan. 1832 in Bartholomew Co., Indiana, died 16 March 1864 in Baton Rouge, LA, and was buried in Newbern Cem., Newbern, Iowa.

It is said that when his parents were preparing to move to Iowa he said nothing about going along. His mother finally said to him, "Willis, doesn't thee intend to go to Iowa with us?" Whereupon he said, "Well mother, I would like to go, but as Miss Margaret White and I are going to be married later on, I do not want to go off and leave her here." So his mother said, "I think that thee had better get married now and take her along." So plans were completed, and he married Margaret S. White on 21 April 1853 in Indiana, and moved to Iowa that same spring. She was born 1835, died 1923, and was buried in Newbern Cem. next to her husband.

When the Civil War started, Willis enlisted in Company E, 34th Regt. of Iowa Volunteers, dying in the War. He was faithful and loved his wife to the end. In 1938, his family still had a letter which he wrote to her a short time before his death. It is a very precious letter, highly prized in the family, and closed with the expression, "Yours until death separates us." After he died, Margaret married his brother William. (R-200)

Nathan Graves (42) was born 5 June 1843, died 11 May 1931, and was buried in Newbern Cem., Newbern, Iowa. He married Evaline Wilson on 26 Dec. 1867. She was born 2 July 1848 in Ohio, died 5 March 1924, and was buried in Newbern Cem. Nathan moved to Iowa with his parents at ten years of age. After his marriage he located on the same 40 acres of land on which his parents lived, but on the opposite side of the road. After the death of his father and oldest brother, he was appointed class leader of the M. E. Church at Newbern, but prior to his death he transferred his membership to the Church of the Nazarene.
