DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE
GRAVES OF PLAISTOW, LONDON, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
George Graves (1) was born in 1775
in England, died 8 April 1826 in Plaistow, Essex, and was buried 13 April 1826
in Brickfield Chapel, Stratford, Essex.
He lived in Plaistow, England (apparently part of what is now London). He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born in 1782, died in 1828 in
Plaistow, Essex, England, and was buried 28 Nov. 1828 in Brickfield Chapel,
Stratford, Essex.
He was killed in a farm accident
when a cart turned over on him 8 April 1826.
According to an old letter: "It would appear that for a couple of
generations or so before grandfather (George John Graves, b. 1841) came to
America, the family lived in the eastern part of the London metropolitan area,
in sections known as Plaistow, West Ham, Stratford, and Woolich. There is a reference to Clapham Park, S.W.,
which I note is about five miles south and a little west of old 'London
City'."
George's grandson, George John
Graves, came to the U.S. from England in 1870, and settled in Kansas. The portion of the following information
from Mrs. Chapple (R‑1) was mainly compiled from family records kept by
Gertrude Graves, daughter of George John Graves. The first child was born and baptized in East Ham, Essex, and all
the others in Plaistow, Essex. (R‑1,
