DESCENDANTS OF NATHAN GRAVES AND ADALINE WOMMACK OF CASWELL CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Nathan Graves (1) was born in Oct. 1844 in NC (according to the 1900 census), probably Caswell Co., and died 21 Oct. 1927 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC[1].  He married Adaline Wommack (or Womack), daughter of Mericus Holloway and Fannie Holloway, on 26 Dec. 1865 in Caswell Co., NC[2].  She was born about 1849 (or April 1855 in NC according to the 1900 census), and died 8 Jan. 1921 in Yanceyville, NC[3].  They were in the 1870, 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, and in the 1880 census for Anderson Twp., Caswell Co., NC.  In 1910, they were living next to Grover Cleveland Graves (b.c. 1884) and his brother James A. Graves (b.c. 1889) of genealogy 58.  Ten of their twelve children were living in 1900, including seven in their household.  Eight of their eleven children were supposedly living in 1910, with only Ida and Betsy in their household.  Cleveland and James may have been their sons, but, if so, they must have had more than 12 children.  In 1920, the family of their son Basley was living next to them.  All the children of Nathan and Adaline were born in NC, probably all in Caswell Co.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF NATHAN GRAVES (1) AND ADALINE WOMMACK

Maria Graves (6) was born about 1875 (or Dec. 1878) in NC.  She was living with her parents in the 1900 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, single, with her only child still living, and Jennie was listed as a granddaughter of her parents.  It is not certain that Jennie was  her daughter, but it seems very likely.  Jennie was still living with Nathan and Adaline in the 1920 census for Yanceyville, listed as a daughter.

Children - Graves

    15.   Jennie (or Jinnie) Graves, b. March 1899.

Belle Graves (8) was born about 1878 in NC. She may have been the Belle Graves in the 1900 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, b. Feb. 1878, in the household of Henry and Annie Madden, listed as daughter, married, no children.  She may also have been the Belle listed as a wife of Jefferson Price in the 1910 census for Pelham Twp., Caswell Co., NC, since the age of 32 and marriage date of about 1899 match.

Because the 1920 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, lists John H. and Belle Hensley living next to Nathan Graves and his son Basley, it was thought that this might be NathanÕs daughter Belle.  John and Belle Hensley were in the 1910 census for Yanceyville, with 4 children, including Andrew Gunn Hensley, b.c. 1895, and Belle is listed as having had only 1 child, still living, and marrying John about 1906.  It seems likely that the Belle who married John Hensley as his second wife was Belle Gunn, listed in the 1900 census for Yanceyville, single, 1 child, Andrew, b. July 1896, daughter of Vianna Gunn, widow.  This Belle Gunn was in the 1880 census for Yanceyville, b.c. 1876, daughter of James and Vianna Gunn.

The most likely connection between John Hensley and Nathan Graves is that Grover Cleveland Graves (possible son of Nathan) married Delila Hensley.  The 1880 census for Yanceyville shows that John H. Hensley was a son of Lea and Glendora Hensley, and it seems very likely that Delila was his sister.

Charlie B. Graves (9) was born in Dec. 1879 in NC, and died after 1910.  (The 1900 census gives Dec. 1883, but he was in the 1880 census.)  He married Hattie B. Johnston on 17 April 1904 in Caswell Co., NC.  She was born about 1885 in NC.  They were in the 1910 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, when 3 of their 4 children were living, and he was a farm laborer.  All their children were born in NC.

    17.   Henry A. Graves, b.c. 1908.

    18.   Charles B. Graves, Jr., b.c. 1909.

Henry Basley Graves (14), called Basley and sometimes given as Basley Henry Graves[4], was born in Oct. 1890 (or 1885) in NC, and died after 1940.  He married Jessie Anna Pattilla (or Potillo), daughter of Jessie Pattilla and Geo. Ann Pattilla, on 19 Oct. 1908 in Caswell Co., NC.  She was born about 1893 (or possibly April 1890) in NC, and also died after 1940.  They were in the 1920 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, living next to his parents.  They were also recorded on the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Yanceyville, NC; their children were born in NC.  He was a farmer.
