DESCENDANTS OF SUSAN CATHERINE DESNOOZES GRAVES OF CASWELL CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Susan Catherine Desnoozes Graves (1) was born in Aug. 1839 in NC according to the 1900 census, (or about Aug. 1835 according to her death certificate, and died 23 Jan. 1936 in Anderson, Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC[1].  Her son E. T. Graves was the informant on her death certificate and stated her parents were Thomas Craig and Mary Helen unknown, which conflicts with the following information.  Susan was a slave and was owned by Henry Graves.  She worked in the kitchen, did not marry but bore three children by her master.  She was first mother of the Graves Chapel Baptist Church when it was a log cabin.  It is believed that the deed of the log cabin church plot was handwritten on a yellow sheet of paper and given to Susan.  Susan was a descendant of the Blackfoot tribe.

The Henry Graves who owned Susan was Henry Major Graves, brother of Thomas Williams Graves, and son of James Graves and Mary Slade (see genealogy 270).  In the 1870 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, Susan Graves, 26, and son Willie, 2, both black, were living next to Major Graves, 53, white, living alone (he never married).  Also living next to them was Margaret Graves, 36, and her children, all mulatto (see Genealogy 79).

Susan has not yet been positively identified in the 1880 census.  She may be the Susan Graves, 35, single, living alone in Yanceyville.  She was in the 1900 census for Yanceyville with children Eddie and Mary, and granddaughter Fleter B. Graves, b. April 1889.  Susan was in the 1910 census for Yanceyville, living with her son Eddie.  In 1900, 3 of her 4 children were still living, and in 1910, 2 of her 4 children were living.

There is some confusion between some of the children of Susan and those of Margaret Graves of Genealogy 79.  It is possible that the William listed below is not her son, but much evidence, including his death certificate, suggests he is.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF SUSAN C. D. GRAVES (1)

William Henry Graves (2), also recorded as W. H. and Willie, was born about 1858 in NC, died 13 Feb. 1937 in Caswell Co., NC, and was buried in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cem., Anderson, Caswell Co., NC[2].  Listed as Willie in 1870, he has not been positively identified on the 1880 census.  He first married Jane ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He married second Addie Belle Phillips, daughter of James Phillips and Bettie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 16 Nov. 1890 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC[3].  She was born in Sept. 1873 in NC, and died between 1907 and 1910; no mother was recorded with the family in 1910.  William and Addie were recorded on the 1900 census in Anderson, Caswell Co., NC.  In 1910, William and his children were recorded on the 1910 census in Yanceyville, NC.  William married third Mary Magdaline (Piles) Irvin on 5 Jan. 1913 in Yanceyville, NC.  She was born 15 March 1885 in Caswell Co., NC, died 15 March 1992 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC.  They were also recorded on the 1930 census in Yanceyville, NC; all his children were born in NC, probably Caswell Co.  In 1900, his birth date was recorded as Jan. 1868, in 1910, he was recorded as 40-years old, in 1920, as 50, and in 1930, as 60.  His death record shows his date of birth as 22 June 1874, so there is definitely conflicting information collected on him.
