THE GRAVES
FAMILY OF YORKSHIRE AND MICKLETON MANOR, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND
BACKGROUND
OF THE FAMILY
The family of
Graves is one of the most ancient in England. This family is believed to have used the name De Grava in
Bordeaux, Gascony. It went in with
the Norman army, and settled in Yorkshire. The name underwent several changes, and its members have
been De Grevis, De Greves, Greve, Grave, Greaves, Greeves, and Graves. John de Grevis was in the army of King
John. His great grandson was
Thomas de les Greves.
The family lived in
early days in that part of England now known as counties Lincoln, Nottingham,
Derby and York, occupying the northern part of the three first named and the
southern part of York. The first recorded
family seat was known as Greves or Greaves, in the parish of Beeley, near
Chatsworth, in the northern part of Derbyshire, and a few miles from the
southerly boundary of York, where the family resided as early as the reign of
Henry III (years 1216-1272).
Also, according to
John Card Graves, the important families of Greaves, of Mayfield Hall, Co.
Stafford, Greaves of Page Hall and Elmsall Lodge, Co. Bucks, and others, trace
their descent from the ancient Derbyshire family. Many of the descendants of the different branches of the
family went, from time to time, to London and other cities in Great Britain,
and to the Colonies, and notably to the American Colonies, in the score of
years from 1629 to 1649. (R‑1,
R‑7)
Genealogy 364 is
probably part of this genealogy, but there are discrepancies between the two,
and they canÕt presently be combined.

born in 1513. He lived at
Beamsley, parish of Addingham, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He settled in London at the age of 80

visit to his son Richard Graves.
He was buried 16 Sept. 1616 in St. Martin's, Ludgate. There is a fine portrait of him by
Cornelis Janson on a panel in Mickleton House, painted when he was in his 102nd
year, and an engraving of him when 102 years old, in Nash's History of Worcestershire. His wife was a daughter of Mensier (or
Manseur or Manseir) of Creke, Co. Norfolk. (There is a discussion on page xxiv of John Card Graves'
book which seems to give a different version, although it could be referring to
another John.) Arms: Checky,

spelled Greaves, not Graves. (R‑1,

Sir Thomas Graves,
K.B. (60) was born about 1747 at Castle Dawson, Ireland, and died in 1814. He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He married second Mary Bacon. He was Vice Admiral of the Blue, a
highly distinguished naval officer, and second in command to Lord Nelson at
Copenhagen.
An interesting
article[1]
about Thomas Graves was in The Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 99, no. 4, Oct. 1991, titled
"Burnt all their houses, The log of HMS Savage during a raid up the
Potomac River, Spring, 1781", edited by Fritz Hirschfeld. After service aboard the Racehorse in 1773 on a voyage of
discovery in the Arctic, Sir Thomas Graves was posted to North America. On 27 May 1775 his schooner Diana was burned by rebels in the
Charles River, and he was seriously injured. This article is about the only organized raid by the Royal
Navy up the Potomac River during the Revolutionary War. It took place in the spring of 1781,
and the home of George Washington, Mount Vernon, narrowly escaped the fate of
many neighboring estates, of being burned and looted. The original log of HMS Savage
kept by Thomas Graves was found in the naval archives of the Public Record
Office in London, and a photocopy was presented to Mount Vernon.

PARKNASILIA, BISHOP-STOOL OF THE RT. REV.
CHARLES GRAVES
CHILDREN OF JOHN
B. GRAVES (83)
Anna Graves (148)
was born about 1830 in Ireland, and died in 1917. She married Charles Murray in 1853 in Kandy, then capital of
Ceylon, where her father was a judge in the Government Service. He was 35 at the time (born about
1818), and they must have decided to leave Ceylon. Their first child was born in 1854 in Bangalore, India, the
next in Paddington, London in 1856, the next 2 in Sutton, Surrey, and the remainder
at Kingsclere, Hampshire.
In the 1861 and
1871 censuses Charles is listed as tenant of Woodhouse Farm, Ashford Hill,
Kingsclere, Hampshire. The farm
was not large, 210 acres, but was on a good site in the Thames Valley on the
border between Hampshire and Berkshire.
The census lists a living-in Bailiff, groom, four labourers, two
carters, and three boys.
The house was big
and it seemed that Charles lived a leisured gentleman's life. His will refers to horses, carriages,
wine and silver, and his eldest son, Charles Templeton, remembers carrying his
father's game bag. In the 1871
census for Kingsclere, Hampshire, all the children are listed except for
Archibald James who was probably away at school. Charles Templeton is shown and it is possible that he was at
home as he was a day student at nearby Bradfield College. A nurse and nursemaid are listed
attending to the seven girls.
Charles left
£35,000 in his will which is long and detailed and contains 3 codicils. He was concerned on two points, firstly
to leave his wife properly settled and secondly to ensure absolute equal
distribution of the remainder amongst his nine surviving children. To this extent, any advance of cash to
any son while he was still alive was to be set against his final inheritance. This was probably inspired by an
advance to Charles Templeton to sail for Australia.
The original will
was made in 1869 and contained details as to the disposal of Woodhouse
Farm. The First Codicil came in
1874 while Charles was staying at 1 Sussex Gardens, Eastbourne, having left
Woodhouse, possibly after a heart attack.
The address on the second codicil (year 1876) was Holm Leigh, Belvedere,
and it refers to the purchase of Brentwood House, Lee Park, Blackheath, Kent,
where the third codicil was made (year 1879). Charles was unable to sign this and his mark was made for
him. He died 20 April 1879, and
was buried in Highgate Cemetery, grave 23244, alongside Anna and two of his
children, Archibald and Sydney.
Warden Harry Graves, his brother-in-law, remembers his as: "as good
a man as ever walked."
Brentwood House in
Blackheath remained the family home until sometime in the late 1890's. All the daughters had married by 1891,
except for Geraldine, who remained a spinster. Anna is listed in Kelley's Blackheath Directory in
1894 but not in 1899. Anna is also
listed in the 1881 and 1891 Blackheath census, where the house is named as No.
22 Lee Park. It seems to have been
a very exclusive area, the other houses being occupied by retired senior military
and civil officers.
Their first child
was born in Bangalore, India, in the Madras Presidency, the second in
Paddington, London, the next 2 in Sutton, Surrey, and all the others in
Kingsclere, Hampshire. (R‑10)
