Rev. 2 April 2008, Gen. 69

DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM B. GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ------

OF NC AND IN

GENERATION 1

William B. Graves (1) was born in NC (according to daughter Nancy’s 1880 census information), and died about 1840, but definitely before Jan. 1847.  William married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  They may have both been born in Elizabeth Co., NC.  Their children were born in NC.  Elizabeth apparently died after the 1860 census of Monroe Co., IN, since no further record can be found for her.  Elizabeth married second Stephen Riddle on 31 May 1849 in Monroe Co., IN.  He was born about 1775 in Guilford Co., NC, married first Mary Ouiette, went to Greene Co., IN in 1818, and settled on Big Spring.  He and his first wife had twelve children.  Stephen Riddle left a will, which mentions William C., Elijah, and Nancy Graves as his stepchildren (book 3, pages 41-42, box 50, Monroe Co., IN, Oct. 1853); none of his Riddle children was listed.  The 1850 census of Greene Co., IN shows Francis M., Elijah T., and Nancy J. Graves living in the Riddle home.  The probate papers of Stephen Riddle also give Isaac C. Graves as working on the Riddle farm.

It is possible that William B. Graves was a son of the Peter Graves of Surry Co., NC (gen. 11) who was born about 1750-55.  This would make him a brother of Peter Graves, Jr., born about 1785, who married Sarah Carmichael.  This is based mainly on the similarity of names and the fact that the families lived in the same area.  It seems possible that William was descended from Francis Graves of Gloucester Co. & Essex Co., VA (genealogy 220).  He was probably closely related to William Graves ( in that genealogy, born by 1724) of Pigg River, Pittsylvania Co., VA, who married Dorothy (probably Smith).  (R‑1, R‑3, R‑11, R‑14)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM B. GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH ‑‑‑‑‑‑

William Cilivan Graves (2) was born 14 May 1818 in NC (although the death certificate of Harrison L. Graves says Tennessee), and died 14 July 1884.  (Could William's middle name be Sullivan?  That would explain why the middle initial was previously thought to be S.)  According to the 1880 census, both his parents were also born in NC.  He was killed in a sawmill boiler explosion on 14 July 1884, at the Carter saw mill, 5 miles west of Harrodsburg, IN . He was buried in Carmichael Cem., section 24, Center Twp., Greene Co., IN.  He was a farmer.  He married Lucinda (or Loucinda) Carter on 10 Nov. 1840 in Greene Co., IN (Marriage book C, p. 94).  She was born 14 Aug. 1820 in Greene Co., IN (although the death certificate of Harrison L. Graves says Missouri), died 26 Feb. 1905 in Greene Co., IN, and was buried in Leach Cem., Freedom, Owen Co., IN.  Both these birth dates as well as those of most of the following children are from the U.S. census records.  The 1880 census indicates that Lucinda's parents were both born in West Virginia.  Lucinda (or Loucinda, according to R‑8) Carter was a daughter of William ("Billy") Carter. and Loucinda Edwards.  William and Loucinda were married 14 Nov. 1804 in Patrick Co., VA.  The first three Carter children (Naoma, Thomas, and Mary ("Polly")) were born in Patrick Co., VA.  The family then moved to Indiana and settled for about three years in New Albany Twp., Floyd Co., IN.  They then moved to Greene Co., IN, where they stayed and died.  Loucinda's son, Harrison Graves, was named for her youngest brother, Harrison Carter (b. 12 Jan. 1829, m. Mary Holmes, 1847, Lawrence Co., IN, d. 20 Sept. 1869, bur. Linn Co., KS).  Their children were born in Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN.  Some of the information provided below is from the Charles O. Carter History Book at Monroe Co., IN, Library, Chapter 6, “Lucinda”.

William C. and Lucinda Graves were in the 1850 Indiana census, Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN.  In this same census, a Peter and Sarah Graves, both born in North Carolina, lived nearby.  According to p. 156ff of Graves Family History by Aubrey Graves, a Peter Graves, Jr., born about 1785, married Sarah Carmichael in Surry Co., N.C. in 1809.  Both the Carmichaels and the family of Peter Graves, Jr. migrated to Indiana about 1825-1830, and probably settled in Greene Co., IN.  Descendants of Peter Graves, Jr. lived in Lawrence Co., IN.  According to the 1850 U.S. census, Peter and Sarah were both 66, making them born about 1784, the same as Peter, Jr.  William C. and Lucinda Graves were also in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 U.S. censuses for Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN.

Mr. Ackerman notes that since there were two small tombstones beside the grave of William C. Graves, he believes two children died young, Lydia and Laura, and that Laura was not the same child as Lucinda Ellen.  Birth information listed below was copied on 13 Feb. 1977 from a family Bible written by Annie (Sharr) Graves (provided by R‑1).  At this time, “Erzie” Graves, Annie’s son, was said to have possession of the Bible.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3, R‑13, R‑15)

Francis Marion Graves (3) was born 1 May 1826 in NC (Surry Co., according to R‑11), died 17 June 1899 in Washington, Daviess Co., IN, and was originally buried in Old City Cem.  His remains were later exhumed and moved to Oak Grove??  He first married Melissa (Graves) Brassfield on 5 Dec. 1850 (or 5 Dec. 1849 per R‑11) in Monroe Co., IN.  She first married James Henderson Brassfield, son of Jesse Brassfield and Mary Reaves, on 9 Dec. 1841 in Monroe Co., IN; her name was entered as “Malipha” Graves on the marriage record.  She was born 2 March 1825 in OH, and died 7 Jan. 1874[1] in Washington, IN.  The children of Melissa by her first marriage were: (1) James Houston Brassfield, b. 4 Oct. 1842, d. 1896 (Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., IL), (2) William Riley Brassfield, b. 5 June 1846, d. 28 July 1920, (3) Perry Henderson Brassfield, b.c. 1847 (IL or IN), listed in a home for the retarded in the 1880 census.  Perry died in Sept. 1885, age 43.  Probate records (provided by R‑1) from Monroe Co., IN, 1818-1872, list Jonathan Brassfield: Administrator, Minor heirs: William Riley Brassfield and Perry Henderson Brassfield, and Guardian: William C. Graves to the estate of James H. Brassfield, Boxes 5-6, on inventory filed 17 Feb. 1865.  R‑11 also indicates a fourth son named Aaron, but he was not listed in the 1860 or 1870 censuses.  A photo in her possession identifies him as a half brother of Nancy Ann Graves.  Some of this information was copied from the Graves family bible which originally belonged to Francis Marion Graves and was revised in Feb. 2001 by R‑11.

Francis married second Fanny R. Cochran on 7 Jan. 1874 as recorded in the Index of Marriages, Daviess Co., IN, bk. 3, p. 528.  She was born 1 May 1826, and died 6 May 1879 in Graysville, IL.  He married third Florence Denton on 30 May 1892.

In the 1850 Greene Co., IN census, there were listings for two people named Francis M. Graves, both age 24, born in NC, one in Highland Twp. and one in Center Twp.  These are probably the same person.  The Highland Twp. listing showed him living in the home of Elias and Elizabeth (Graves) East (his brother-in-law and sister).  Francis and family were shown in the 1860 census for Harrodsburg, Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN, and in the 1870 census for Washington, Washington Twp., Daviess Co., IN.  Francis has not been found in the 1880 census.  Francis and Melissa’s children were born in Indiana.  (R‑1, R‑11)

Elizabeth Graves (4) was born about 1830 in Indiana, and died after 1875.  She married Elias East on 20 Oct. 1848 in Monroe Co., IN.  He was born about 1826 in NC, according to the 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses for Greene Co., IN.  Elizabeth may not be a child of William B. and Elizabeth Graves, but part of the Lawrence Co., IN line of Peter Graves.  In the probate papers of William Graves (son of Peter) is a bill of sale for family possessions bought by Elias and Elizabeth East.  Living with the family in Highland Twp., IN on the 1850 census were her brother Francis M. Isaac Coplin (per R‑14) Graves (5) was born 23 May 1831 in NC, and died 9 April 1910 in Monroe Co., IN of TB.  His death record shows his father as William B. Graves, born in NC, and his mother as unknown.  He married Mary Ann Walker, daughter of Thomas Walker and Cynthia Stewart Evans, on 25 Oct. 1856 in Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN.  She was born 19 Dec. 1834 in Indiana, and died 28 July 1914 near Harrodsburg, Monroe Co., IN at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William (Nancy) Taylor.  Both Isaac and Mary were buried in Clover Hill Cem., Harrodsburg, IN.  Isaac C. Graves had a claim against his father's estate (in box 50).  Also, the Eli Graves listed as nephew of William C. Graves in the 1880 census is probably Elijah Evan listed below.  Isaac's tombstone indicates that he served in the 97th, Co. C Indiana Vol. in the Civil War.  On his Declaration for Pension he lists his place of birth as Sarah [sic] (Surry) County, NC; his Certificate of Disability for Discharge, dated 2 Oct. 1863, states his place of birth as Serry [sic] Co., North Carolina; his grounds for discharge: “Phthisis Pulmonalis” (TB).  On a questionnaire submitted to the Bureau of Pensions dated April 25th, 1898, he lists the names and birthdates of his living children and his marriage date to Mary; the only discrepancies are the day of Simon’s birth, 5 Dec. was given, and the day of his marriage, 19 Oct. was the date he provided  In his obituary his place of birth was listed as Elizabeth Co., NC.  The family was recorded on the 1860 census in Washington, Morgan Co., IN living with the Charles Roberts family; in 1870, 1880 and 1900, they were in Clear Creek, Monroe Co., IN.  Their children were born in Monroe Co., IN.  (R‑1, R‑14)

N.C.) and Mary (Graves) Carmichael[4] (age 60, b. N.C.).  The 1860 census for Indian Creek Twp. lists Alex, Stacy, and family, and the 1870 census for Monroe Co. lists James M. Gordon, Stacy, and family.  James and Stacy’s daughter Levyetta (“Etta”) married second Joseph L. Graham and was also buried in Oak Hill Cem.

An item in a 1906 Orleans, IN newspaper mentions Alex and Stacy's daughter, Serilda, and indicates that Alex was a brother of Nancy:  "Mrs. John A. Meredith visited her aunt, Mrs. Nancy Tilley, for a week in Orleans, Ind."

Stacy was born about 1837 in Indiana, died 29 July 1916, and was buried in New Oak Hill Methodist Church Cem., Riley, Vigo Co., IN next to her daughter Serilda.

Alex and Stacy’s children were born in Indiana.  (R‑1)

In the 1850 census for Center Twp., Greene Co., IN, Nancy was shown in the household of Stephen Riddle and Elizabeth.  Nancy was shown in the 1860 census in Washington Twp., Morgan Co., IN, living next door to Isaac C. Graves.  She is listed in the 1880 census for Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN, with her two daughters.  She applied for widow's pension in 1863, while living in Harrodsburg, Monroe Co., IN.  She sold land in 1866 in Indian Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN (section 11), and exchanged land in 1870-71 in the Harrodsburg area.  She sold her property in Harrodsburg and moved to Orleans, IN in April 1901.  Nancy left a will, dated 1908, which only mentioned her daughter Jennie Salyards, indicating Lizzie died before 1908.  Lizzie's two children lived with their grandmother, Nancy, after their mother died.  They moved from Cleveland, Ohio to their grandmother's home in Orleans, IN in 1901.  One of the granddaughters, Clide Evelyn Newkirk, took care of Nancy from the time her health deteriorated in 1908 until her death in 1911.  (R‑1, R‑3)
