DESCENDANTS OF ASA WHITNEY GRAVES OF KILLINGLY, CT

GENERATION 1

Asa Whitney Graves (1) was born in Feb. 1820 in Killingly, Windham Co., CT, died 31 March 1904 in Danielson Borough, Killingly, CT, at the age of 84, and was buried in New Westfield Cem., Killingly.  He first married Lucy T. Gould, daughter of George William Gould and Hannah Tufts.  She was born 16 Nov. 1822 in Pomfret, CT, and died 2 Jan. 1853 in Danielson Borough, Killingly, CT.  Her father George was born 1798, died 1865, and was buried in Old Westfield Cem., all in Killingly, CT.

Asa married second Caroline Champlin in 1854 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT.  She was born about 1832-1834 in CT, and died 1880-1900.  She was in the 1850 census for Plainfield, CT.

Asa was in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses for Killingly, Windham Co., CT.  He was a gunsmith.

The 1790 census of Killingly (spelled Killingley) shows John Graves (2 males 16+, 4 males under 16, 4 females), Isachar Graves (1 male 16+, 5 males under 16, 2 females), and Whitney Graves (1 male 16+, 7 females).  It is thought that Asa might have been a son or grandson of one of these.  The 1800 census for Killingly (spelled Killingley) lists Ebenezer Graves (1 M 16-25, 1 M 45+, 1 F 10-15, 2 F 45+), Isacher Graves (2 M <10, 2 M 10-15, 1 M 16-25, 1 M 45+, 2 F <10, 1 F 10-15, 1 F 26-44), and Whitney Graves (1 M <10, 1 M 45+, 2 F <10, 4 F 10-15, 1 F 26-44).  The 1810 census for Killingly lists Richard Graves (1 M 26-44, 3 F <10, 1 F 10-15, 1 F 26-44) and Whitney Graves (3 M <10, 1 M 10-15, 1 M 45+, 1 F 10-15, 3 F 16-25, 1 F 26-44, 1 F 45+).  The 1820 census for Killingly lists Artemas Graves (2 M <10, 1 M 26-44, 1 F <10, 1 F 16-25), Richard Graves (1 M <10, 1 M 26-44, 3 F <10, 2 F 10-15, 2 F 16-25, 1 F 26-44), and Whitney Graves (2 M 10-15, 1 M 16-18, 2 M 16-25, 1 M 45+, 2 F 16-25, 1 F 26-44, 1 F 45+).  The 1830 census for Killingly lists Artemas Graves (1 M <5, 2 M 10-14, 1 M 40-49, 2 F <5, 1 F 5-9, 1 F 10-14, 1 F 30-39), Mrs. Nancy Graves (1 M <5, 1 M 5-9, 1 M 10-14, 1 F 10-14, 2 F 15-19, 1 F 40-49), Whitney Graves (1 M 40-49, 1 M 70-79, 1 F 70-79), and William Graves (1 M <5, 1 M 20-29, 1 F <5, 1 F 20-29).  The 1840 census for Killingly lists David Graves (1 M 5-9, 1 M 15-19, 1 M 20-29, 1 M 50-59, 3 F 10-14, 1 F 50-59), Willys Graves (1 M 30-39, 1 F 30-39), William Graves (1 M 5-9, 1 M 10-14, 1 M 40-49, 1 F 5-9, 1 F 10-14, 1 F 40-49, 1 F 80-89), Elijah Graves (1 M 20-29, 1 F <5, 1 F 15-19, 1 F 20-29), Lebbeus Graves (1 M 15-19, 1 F <5, 1 F 20-29), and Lowell Graves (1 M <5, 1 M 30-39, 2 F <5, 1 F 30-39).

All these people were probably descended from Lebbeus Graves (b. 1705) and Amity Whitney, a descendant of Rear Admiral Thomas Graves (gen. 28).  Whitney and Isacher were sons of Lebbeus.  Richard, David, Artemas, and Elijah were sons of Isacher.  The identities of John Graves and Ebenezer Graves arenÕt known.

There is no doubt that Asa Whitney Graves was descended from Lebbeus Graves and Amity Whitney of genealogy 28.  He may have been a son of David Graves and Betsy Hewlett.  (R‑1, R‑2)
