DESCENDANTS OF HARDY GRAVES OF SC & PIKE CO., AL

GENERATION 1

Hardy ("Pete") Graves (1) was born about 1775 in SC. He married Emma ‑‑‑‑‑‑. They both died in Pike Co., AL, and were buried at Pea River Baptist Church, Pike Co.

In a query from Mr. C. W. Thompson, p. 99, 1985 GFNL, he says he is descended from Hardy Graves through his daughter, Lucinda Graves, who married William Thompson. (This daughter is not named by Mrs. McNabb.) After the untimely death of Robert Thompson, William's father, Hardy Graves married Robert's widow, Rhoda Ann Grubbs, so Hardy was probably married at least twice.

There was a Hardy Graves listed in the 1810 census of Marion Co., SC (created from Georgetown District in 1798), who was born 1775-85, who is apparently the one who went to Pike Co., AL in the 1820's. Mr. John P. Johnston, in a query on p. 55, 1984 GFNL, said that “in the 1820's, John, James, Archibald, Thomas, Stephen, and Hardy Graves (all born about 1775-85) came here to Pike Co., AL. They were all living in Marion Dist., SC in 1810. I see that the 1790 SC census shows only two Graves men in that area, James Graves and Thomas Graves in Georgetown District. I am almost positive that one of them was the father of my ancestor, Archibald Graves." Archibald and Hardy may have been brothers.

There is much information without supporting documentation in compiled genealogies on Ancestry.com, so there is undoubtedly some missing information and some errors in this genealogy. (R‑1, R‑3)

They were both buried at Pea River Baptist Church, Pike Co. The family was in the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, page 269, house 1836, with John as head of household. He was a farmer. They were in the 1860 census for Brundidge P.O., Pike Co., AL, page 395, house 1511, with Nancy as head of household. The 1870 census for Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, listed Nancy E. Graves, 52, as head of household, with children Nancy J., 24, Alley, 15, and Stephen W., 11. Nancy was in the 1880 census for Dixons Twp., Pike Co., AL, page 14D: Nancy E. Graves, 60, NC, Nancy J. James Graves (4) was not in the 1850 census. It is reported that he died in Jan. 1859 in Pike Co., AL, and that he married Sarah H. Minshew. She was born about 1803 in NC. However, it can’t be shown from the 1850 census that he was even named James, and it appears that he died before 1850, and that the 1859 death was for the other James Graves mentioned below.

On page 272 of the 1850 Pike Co., AL, census was Sarah, age 47, as head of household, with children Elizabeth, 14, Rachel, 13, Joseph, 11, and Martha, 9, living with her. She was living next to the family of John (brother of James), with Hardy Graves, 73, in his household. Sarah was head of household in the 1860 census for Eastern Div., Pike Co., AL, with children Rachel, 22, Joseph, 21, and Martha, 17. She was head of household in the 1870 census for Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, with daughters Rachel, 32, and Martha, 28. All the children were born in Pike Co., AL.

There was a James Graves, born about 1785 or 1787 in SC (according to the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL), who probably died in Jan. 1859 in Pike Co., AL. If that date of birth is correct, then it seems unlikely that he could have been a son of Hardy Graves. In the 1850 census, he was living near Thomas Graves (b.c. 1789 in SC) who married Charity. They may have been closely related, perhaps brothers. The 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, showed this James and Sarah with children Nancy, 16, Corbsih (?), 13, and Amanda, 10, in the household. This Sarah was born about 1800 in SC.

It appears that the list of children below combines both of these Graves families, and that the James Graves who was born 1785-1787 and had children Nancy and Amanda was not a son of Hardy Graves. It seems most likely that a son of Hardy Graves married another Sarah, died before 1850, and had children who included Elizabeth, Rachel, and Martha, but none after that. This needs to be sorted out. 32. Rachael Graves, b.c. 1837 (Pike Co., AL), m. Stephen Graves, (Pike Co., AL). If this Rachael did marry a Stephen Graves, no evidence can be found. The marriage would have been after 1870, and she has not been found in the 1880 census.

33. Julia Ann Amanda Graves, b. 11 Sept. 1838, m(1) Hardy Graves (#9), 31 Dec. 1856 (Pike Co., AL), m(2) Peyton D. Graves, 1863-1870, d. 22 Nov. 1916 (Pike Co., AL). See #9 for her children. Julia and Peyton were in the 1880 census for Pike Co., AL. He was b.c. 1810 in SC. It seems possible that Julia’s husband was actually her uncle, a brother of her father James. Peyton may be the David P. Graves who was in the 1840 census next to Hardy Graves, in the 1850 census with no wife or children, and in the 1860 census for Pike Co., AL.

Charles Graves (5) was born about 1807 in SC, died 28 April 1888 in Dixon's Beat, Pike Co., AL, and was buried in Pike Co., AL. He married Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1815-1820 in GA. He was in the 1840 census for Pike Co., AL, with 1 daughter, 5-10. They were in the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, with 1 daughter, Eliza. They couldn’t be found in the 1860 census. They were in the 1870 census for Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, with children Sarah, 17, and Susannah, 13. These were probably actually their grandchildren, since they exactly matched the names and ages of 2 of their grandchildren living next door, and the same 2 children were living in their household in the 1880 census (named as grandchildren that time, but with different ages). They were in the 1880 census for Dixons Beat, No. 7, Pike Co., AL, with grandchildren Sarah, 21, Susannah, 19, and Charles Jackson, 22.

Sarah Graves (6) was born 12 Jan. 1810 in SC[1], died 13 April 1874 in Brundidge, Pike Co., AL, and was buried in Williams Methodist Chapel Cem., Brundidge. She married Elisha Williams, son of Jonathan Williams and Frances Cowart, on 9 March 1830 in Brundidge, AL. He was born 1 (or 15[2]) March 1800 in New Hanover Co., NC, and died 1 Nov. 1879 in Brundidge, AL. According to R‑1, he was also buried at Williams Chapel, Pike Co., AL; however, R‑9 gave it as Blanton’s Field, Tennille, Pike Co., AL. All their children were born in Pike Co., AL. After Sarah died, Elisha married Lucy E. Smith on 6 Sept. 1874.

It is interesting that Jonathan Williams, father of Elisha, served in the 4th Brigade, Beardsley's Colonial Regt. of the Connecticut Militia during the Rev. War. He enlisted in 1778 at 14 years of age. (R‑1, R‑9)

She married William Thompson, son of Robert Thompson and Rhoda Ann Grubbs, on 3 Nov. 1839. He was born in 1812 in SC, and died 17 Jan. 1862 in Jackson, LA. They lived in Pike Co., AL. He married Julia Ann Amanda Graves (#33), daughter of James Graves and Sarah H. Minshew, on 31 Dec. 1856 in Pike Co., AL. She was born 11 Sept. 1838 in Pike Co., AL. They have not been found in the 1860 census. Julia was listed as head of household in the 1870 census for Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, with her 3 children, living next to her widowed mother. Julia married second Peyton D. Graves, and they were listed in the 1880 census for Dixons Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, with Julia’s children Victoria and Mary. (R‑1)

Emanuel Graves (11) was born about 1838 in Pike Co., AL. He married Rebecca E. McMillan, daughter of James McMillan and Eliza ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1850 in TX. He was in the 1860 census for Colorado Co., TX, age 22, living with the William T. Strahan family. They were in the 1870 census for Precinct 4, Colorado Co., TX, with him listed as a compositor. They were in the 1880 census for Precinct 4, Colorado Co., TX, living with her family, and he was a farm larorer. All their children were born in TX, probably all in Colorado Co.

Both their children were born in AL, probably in Pike Co.

Newton Vinton Graves (13) was born 16 July 1841 in AL, died 31 Aug. 1906 in Pike Co., AL, and was buried in Sept. 1906 at Pea River Baptist Church, Pike Co., AL. He married Margaret E. B. Jackson, daughter of Edward Jackson and Ellen ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 3 Jan. 1867 in Brundidge, Pike Co., AL. She was born about 1849 in SC, died 10 Jan. 1922 in Coffee Co., AL, and was buried in Jan. 1922 in Coffee Co.

Newton served in the Civil War in Co. A, 60th Ala. Inf., from Pike Co., AL. He and sons Bascom and John died on the same date. They were constructing or repairing a barn, and were struck by lightning.

Eliza Graves (36) was born about 1833 in AL, probably in Pike Co., and probably died before 1880, since her husband had remarried by then. She married Elisha (or Elijah) D. Jackson. He was born about 1834 in SC. They haven’t been found in the 1860 census, but they were in the 1870 census for Beat 7, Pike Co., AL, living next to her parents. In the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Precinct 4, Colorado Co., TX, Nellie M. Graves, born about 1902 was living with her grandparents, Reinard and Minnie Greak. Confirmation for the parents of Bettie is the 1880 census for Precinct 3, Colorado Co., TX, where Bettie is listed as a daughter, with Kreag Reinhard, 29, Prussia, both parents born in Prussia, wife, Bettie M., 25, TX, both parents born in Wittenburg, and sisters Mary L., 4, and Louisa J., 2. It is interesting that either the 1880 census taker was confused about which name was the surname of this German family, or the father’s name was originally Kreag Reinhard and the names were switched later. He married third Sarah E. (or C.) (“Sallie”) Rottow (or Rotten) on 20 Dec. 1888 in Pike Co., AL. Her marriage date doesn’t seem to make sense. There was a Sarah E. Rotten, age 21 (b.c. 1859) in the 1880 census for Poplar Springs, Tallapoosa Co., AL, daughter of John T. and Elizabeth Rotten. Perhaps Sarah was actually Oscar’s first wife, and she died in childbirth or soon after.
