DESCENDANTS OF MARGARET BOYD GRAVES OF CASWELL CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Margaret Boyd Graves (1) was born about 1834 in VA, and died after 1900. She was in the 1870 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, with 7 children, but no husband, plus Pinckney Graves, 20, born in TN, also in her household, all listed as mulatto. Pinckney was working on the railroad. Later censuses show Pinckney (or Pinkney) born in NC; his marriage record lists his mother as Margaret, and he is being included here as one of her children. Next door to her in 1870 were Susan Graves (of genealogy 67), and Major Graves (Henry Major Graves or Major Henry Graves of genealogy 270), a white farmer and former slaveowner.

She was in the 1880 census for Reidsville, North Williamsburg Twp., Rockingham Co., NC, living with M. H. Graves (Major Henry Graves), where she was listed as widowed servant. A white boarder, James W. Meadow, 20, farm laborer, and her children Walter A., Lewis H., and Margrett L. Graves also lived with them. Felix Graves was also listed as a son, but is Louellen’s son. All her children were born in NC.

The following narrative, written by Azie Koger, is from the Caswell County Historical Association website, originally from The House of Koger, by Azie Koger. Her mother was Margaret Graves, and her grandmother was Margaret Boyd Graves.

“. . . a lot on Holderby Street which he erected as his home. He rived the boards and built the three room house thereon himself. His thrift and worth soon attracted the attention of others and it was not unusual to have a Negro on the Trustee Board, as the _____ committee that managed the few schools that were then being established for Negroes. My father was appointed to such a position of trust. The school was built not far from the old John Watlington Place but on the Thompsonville Road.

About 1870 a few Baptists of the county had organized some kind of a congregation which met about in houses and under groves in fair weather. They conducted a Sunday School and while my father was not a church member at the time he taught in the Sunday School. As reading and writing were taught in such services, it is not surprising that his talents were used. Back in that day after the laying by of the crops and just before harvesting, great camp meetings and revivals were the order of the day. A brush arbor, church, or school building was acquired and the people for miles around came and camped and sometimes stayed for days at these meetings. In the late summer of 1880 the Baptist church mentioned above applied for and was allowed the use of the school building for revival purposes. Among those who attended from the vicinity of Yanceyville about 28 miles away, was one Mrs. Margaret Graves and three or four children, among them a blushing your and pretty daughter, age fifteen years. This young girl was later to be my mother.

My mother often laughed in telling the story of the first time she caught a glimpse of the man she wed. As a custodian of the building he was quite self conscious and officious. Parading up and down the aisle of the school building which was not being used as a church, dressed in a "doeskin" Prince Albert coat, new shoes, and carrying upon his left arm a shining beaver hat. To her he presented a comical sight and so she giggled, giggled, and giggled. They met and kept company during the entire meeting. In March 1882, they were married amid elaborate wedding ceremonies. He led his blushing bride in his home and the House of Koger had been properly established.

My Mother's Beginning

My grandmother was born near the vicinity of Winchester, W. Va., way back in the dark days of slavery. Her name was Margaret and her owner's name was Boyd. Boyd died when she was a mere girl and she was willed to an unmarried daughter, her mother and two other sisters going to other members of the family. Her father had died shortly after her birth. Financial difficulties soon followed and she was ordered sold. The first and real lasting impression of her mother was seeing her down on her knees begging her master to purchase her little daughter so that her family would not be divided. My grandmother to be was bought by one Major Henry Graves of Yanceyville, N.C., and she accordingly grew up in the Graves household.”

There is some confusion between some of the children of Margaret and those of Susan Graves of genealogy 67. (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF MARGARET BOYD GRAVES (1)

W. (perhaps William) Pinckney (or Pinkney) Graves (2) was born in Jan. 1850 in NC, and died after 1910. He married Mildred Caroline Williamson, daughter of Bedford Paschall and Aggie Williamson, on 13 July l872 in Caswell Co., NC. She was born about 1853 in NC, and also died after 1910. This family was recorded on the 1880 census in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC and the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC. In the latter two censuses, Caroline stated that five of her nine children were living.

She was b. 15 Jan. 1890, daughter of William Logan Bennett and Josephine Jones, d. 30 April 1961. He was a dentist. Both bur. Jefferson City National Cem. (Jefferson City, MO).

Louellen Graves (3) was born about 1853 in NC, and died 10 Sept. 1894. She was recorded on the 1870 census in the household of her mother. On Felix’s marriage certificate for his first marriage, only initials appear for his parents: T. B. (or F. B), as his father, and L. D. Graves as his mother. This record indicated that she was still living and his father was dead.

Walter A. Graves (4) was born in Feb. 1855 in NC, and died between 1903 and 1910. He married Della King, daughter of Henry and Edy King, on 23 March 1893 in Rockingham Co., NC[1]. She was born in June 1872 in NC, and died 11 April 1956 in Rockingham, NC. Della’s parents and family were in the 1880 census for Oregonville, Rockingham Co., NC. Walter and Della were in the 1900 census for Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC, when he was a bar keeper, and they had one child who was not living. They have not been found in the 1910 census, but their son Alonzo was living with his widowed grandmother, Edie King, mulatto, 78, in the 1910 census for Ruffin, Rockingham Co., NC. Della married second Rev. J. B. Bryant. He was born about 1862 in NC. They were recorded on the 1930 census in Reidsville, NC. (R‑1)

Lewis H. Graves (5) was born 13 March 1857 in NC, died 15 Jan. 1921 in Stony Creek, Caswell Co., NC, and was buried in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cem., Anderson, Caswell Co., NC[2]. He was living with M. H. Graves and Margaret Graves in the 1880 census for Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC, and listed as son. He first married Annie ‑‑‑‑‑‑[3]. She died before the 1900 census. He was in the 1900 census for Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC, with Margaret Graves living with them, listed as grandmother.

He married second Emma Vaughn on 18 Dec. 1901 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC[4]. She was born about 1861 in NC (or June 1855[5]), died 23 July 1934 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC[6], and was also buried in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cem. They were in the 1910 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, when 4 of her 4 children were still living, living next to his brother William H. Graves. The 4 children listed for Emma were almost certainly those for Lewis by his first marriage, since that is the same number given for the widowed Lewis in the 1900 census (and then crossed out). Additional evidence that the 1900 and 1910 census records were for the same Lewis Graves is that his daughter Caroline was in both census records. Lewis and Emma were in the 1920 census for Yanceyville, with 3 children listed as sons, Albert Price, 7, Walter Price, 5, and Banner Price, 3. Perhaps they were actually grandchildren. Lewis was a farmer. All their children were born in NC.

Thomas Graves (6) was born in Sept. 1859 in NC, and died after 1920. He married Martha Williamson, daughter of Wash Washington and Rosana Williamson, on 22 Dec. 1885 in Caswell Co., NC[7]. She was born in April 1857 in NC, and died between 1910 and 1920. He was in the 1880 census for Stony Creek Twp., Caswell Co., NC, working in a tobacco factory. They were in the 1900 census for Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC, when 6 of their 8 children were living. They were in the 1910 census for Locust Hill, Caswell Co., NC, when 10 of their 14 children were living. He was in the 1920 census for Locust Hill Twp., Caswell Co., NC, widowed, with daughters Beulah, Emma, and Willie, son Azie, and granddaughter Beulah M. Graves, living with him. He was a farmer. All their children were born in NC, probably all in Caswell Co.

Mary (“Mamie Lou”) Graves (8) was born about 1863, and died 15 April 1936 in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC[8]. She first married David J. Chandler, son of Major Chandler and Ann Evans, on 21 Feb. 1884 in Caswell Co., NC[9]. She married second Edward Jones Mayes, son of Charles Mayes and Ann Mayes, on 11 Dec. 1892 in Rockingham Co., NC[10]. He was born about 1872 in NC, and died 16 March 1938 in Reidsville, NC[11]. They were buried in City Cem. (also known as Greenview Cem.) in Reidsville, NC. They were recorded on the 1900-1920 censuses Reidsville, NC. In 1920, Mamie stated that seven of her eight children were living. This was his first marriage, but her second, so the first 2 children listed below were probably by her first marriage to David J. Chandler. All their children were born in NC. They were also recorded on the 1930 census in White Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier Co., WV. (R‑1)

Margaret (“Maggie”) Graves (9) was born 27 Feb. 1865 in NC, and died 13 Sept. 1938 in Baltimore, MD. She married James Fountain Koger on 14 March 1882 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. He was born in June 1854 in VA, and died before the 1920 census. They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC. Six of their 8 children were living in 1900, and 9 of their 13 children were living in 1910. He was listed as a merchant in 1900 and a butcher in 1910. Maggie was in the 1920 census for Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC, widowed, with children Azie, Kitty, Aileen, and Earl living with her. The following paragraph is from the Caswell County Historical Association website.

“Maggie was a pioneer educator, born February 27, 1865, and married James Fountain Koger on March 14, 1882, in Yanceyville, NC. He was a trustee in the First Baptist Church of Reidsville, NC. Maggie reared ten children. The mother of Sallie Myrtle (teacher), James Henry, Eugene Allen, Linwood Graves (lawyer), Azzie Brisco (lawyer), Wyonna (teacher), Katherine (teacher), John Franklin, Earl (editor), Aileen (teacher), grandmother of Dr. James T. Moore and the Honorable Eugene Koger, Jr. Maggie died September 13, 1938, at the Provident Hospital in Baltimore, MD.” (R‑1)

William Henry Graves (10) was born 22 June 1869 in NC, and died 13 March 1937. He first married Addie Bell Phillips on 3 Nov. 1890. She was born about 1873. He married second Mary Magdaline Piles, daughter of John Piles and Kaline Watkins, on 5 Feb. 1913. She was born about 1880. He and Addie were in the 1900 census for Anderson, Caswell Co., NC, and in the 1910 census for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. He and Mary were in the 1930 census for Yanceyville, with their son. It is interesting that in 1930, Preston Graves (of genealogies 455 and 22) was living between William and his son Lewis. He was a farmer. All his children were born in NC.

It is possible that William Henry Graves wasn’t a son of Susan. Is it possible that he was a son of Bural Graves in genealogy 455, listed as Henry Graves, b.c. 1869? That would explain why Preston Graves was living next to him. (R‑1)

Walter Henry Graves (11) was born in Dec. 1873 in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC[12], died 5 May 1926 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, and was buried in Pinewood Cem., Charlotte, NC[13]. He married Lillian Beatrice Crews, daughter of William H. Crews and Sarah E. Crenshaw, on 28 June 1899 in Oxford, Granville Co., NC[14]. She was born in Dec. 1875 in Oxford, NC, and died after 1930. This family was recorded on the 1900-1920 censuses in Charlotte, NC; their children were born in NC. Walter was a medical doctor. Lillian was recorded on the 1930 census in Charlotte, NC as a widowed seamstress.

Felix B. Graves (17) was born 7 April 1872 in Caswell Co., NC, and died 11 Aug. 1955 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA[15]; his mother’s name was listed as Luellen. He first married Minerva L. Gannaway, daughter of Granville T. F. Gannaway and his first wife Sally Paschal, on 10 Sept. 1894 in Stony Creek, Caswell Co., NC[16]. Only the initials of his parents appeared on his marriage record: father, T. B. (or F. B.), mother L. D. Graves. His father was deceased and his mother was living at the time of his marriage. Minerva was born about 1878 in NC. Felix married second Elizabeth Harrison, daughter of William Harrison and Rachel Harrison on 25 June 1899 in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC[17]. His father’s name was recorded as unknown and his mother was L. Graves. Elizabeth was born 2 Feb. 1882 in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC, and died 9 March 1956 in Pittsburgh, PA. They were buried in Allegheny Cem., Pittsburgh, PA. This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Reidsville, NC and the 1910-1940 censuses in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1910, Elizabeth stated that only one of her five children was living.

Caroline (“Carrie”) Annie Graves (21) was born 25 Dec. 1892 in Caswell Co., NC, died 14 June 1918 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. She married Warren Lee Price, son of Albert (or John) Price and Hannah Price, on 27 Dec. 1911 in Yanceyville, NC[18]. He was born 20 April 1869 in VA, and died 29 March 1972 in Yanceyville, NC[19]. They were buried in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cem., Anderson, Caswell Co., NC. Their graves are either unmarked or no longer marked. Her children were recorded on the 1920 census living with Lewis Graves. Warren was recorded on the 1930 census in Yanceyville, NC as John Warren Price. The following children were recorded with him, all born in NC.

He was in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, living with his parents. He and Purnie were in the 1920 census for Locust Hill, Caswell Co., NC. They were in the 1930 census for Yanceyville, with 7 Madkins nieces and nephews, but no child named Onza King. (R‑1)

Mary Elizabeth Graves (53) was born 30 Aug. 1894 and died 24 Feb. 1979, both in Caswell Co., NC. She married Edd (or Eddie) Hill about 1910. He was born about 1888 in NC. They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC. He was a blacksmith. All their children were born in NC.

Henry James E. Graves (55) was born in Nov. 1899 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC, died in March 1964 in Bluefield, WV, and was buried at Graves Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Caswell Co., NC.
