GENERATION 7

CHILDREN OF GEORGE GREAVES (47) AND ELIZABETH LANCASTER

Charles Graves (52) was born 13 Sept. 1787[1] in Chambly, Quebec, Canada (Lower Canada), and died 2 Dec. 1878 in Muskegon, MI.  He first married Betsey ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He married second Clarissa (or Theresa) Senecal[2].  He lived in Clinton Co., NY, moved to Waukesha, WI, and then moved to Muskegon, MI in 1857.  The first 8 children below were listed in his application for U.S. citizenship on 28 Jan. 1840.

His obituary was in the Muskegon Chronicle, Friday, Dec. 6, 1878, Muskegon Co., Michigan (R‑4):

ÒAnother Veteran of 1812 Gone

The death of Charles Graves, which took place in this city last Monday at the residence of Alexander Marcoux, takes away another of the veterans of 1812.  Mr Graves was born Sept. 13 1787, and was one of the soldiers of the War of 1812 and was engaged in the battle of Plattsburg.  He was a resident of this city for about 25 years, and at the time of his death was 91 years, 2 months and 26 days old.  The funeral took place from St. MaryÕs Catholic Church on Wednesday, the services being conducted by Father VanPammel.Ó

Clarrisa/Theresa was apparently first married to Mr. Senecal and had at least two children, Phoebe Senecal, born 19 March 1828, and George Senecal (whose name was changed to George Graves), born about 1837.  There is some implication (in Phoebe's obituary) that Caroline, Adeline, Clarissa and Elizabeth were also Senecal children who took the Graves name.  That is apparently not possible, however, since they were all born after Charles and Clarissa supposedly married.  However, if George was a child of Clarissa by her first marriage, then how could Edward and Lewis be children of Clarissa and Charles, since they were born before 1837?

There is confusion as to given names not only for the second wife of Charles (was she Theresa or Clarissa or both?), but also regarding some of the children.  Why was the oldest daughter of Charles sometimes called Julia Ann and sometimes Emelie?  Was the child born in 1842 Florence of Caroline?  Was the daughter born in 1844 known both as Mary and as Clarissa?  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3)

George Andrew Graves (74) was born 13 Nov. 1821 in Chambly, Quebec, Canada[4], was baptized 6 Jan. 1822, died 1 May 1858 at his residence in N.Y. City, and was buried in New York Bay Cem., Garfield Ave., Jersey City, NJ.  The record obtained from the cemetery showed that he was buried in row 7, grave 872.  The cemetery was the property of St. George's Episcopal parish, 16th St., N.Y. City.

He first married Mary R. Bartlett on 11 May 1843 (Bible record).  She died 22 July 1849.

He secondly married Martha Jane Neely on 16 Nov. 1849 (Bible record) in N.Y. City.  She was born in 1818 in Newton, Limavady, Londonderry, Ireland, and died 19 Dec. 1885 in N.Y. City, of apoplexy.  She was buried in Greenwood Cem., Brooklyn, NY, plot 18372, grave 19, until March 1922.  Then her remains were exhumed and placed in what was to become the Graves family plot, located in the same cemetery, Jasmine Ave., plot 36056, section 131, buried as M. J. Graves.  According to records of names of Irish ancestry, her maiden name was ancient, changing from Onihll to Oneill, and later to Neely.

One of the daughters of George saved a piece of paper dated Oct. 29, 1857, writer unknown.  It states that Mr. John Greaves, esq., of Debord St., Montreal, Canada, had settled a bank account on Lizzie Greaves, Robert Graves, and initials of S.A., W.K. and M.E., with ditto marks under the Graves name.  The sum was 792.09 (presumed to be money).  The reverse side of this paper is a record of the expenses of the funeral of Martha J. Graves.

The Graves name (instead of Greaves) has been used since George A. died, and no effort has ever been made to correct the spelling.  A bereaved woman left suddenly with 5 young children would hardly be expected to notice that the name was misspelled.

All the children were born in N.Y. City.  (R‑6)

[1] The date of birth of Charles Graves is supported by the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and by his application for U.S. citizenship.  R-3 said that he was born in 1765 and died in 1855 at age 92, but those dates of birth and death are not correct.

[2] The name of the second wife of Charles Graves has been given as Clarripa.  However, the spelling in at least one legal document is clearly Clarrissa (using the old style script for the first s, making it look like f or p), and she is listed as Clarissa in the 1870 census for Muskegan, MI.  She was listed as Teressa in the 1860 census for Saranac, Clinton Co., NY.

[3] The wife of Lewis Graves was listed as Addie in the 1860 census and as Abby in the 1870 census.

[4] R‑6 gave his place of birth as Coburg, Ontario, Canada, but did not have the exact date.  His correct place of birth and baptism was Chambly, Quebec, based on records of St. StephenÕs Church, Chambly, Quebec (Chambly Garrison Ang f2, microfilm 10085, Quebec National Archives).

[5] R-2 gave her name as Eliza and R-3 gave it as Elise.

[6] R-2 gave their marriage date as 13 May 1866 and R-3 gave it as 15 May 1866.

[7] R-3 said he died 21 Sept. 1966 in Boston, MA, and R-2 said he died 21 Sept. 1965 in Nashua, NH.

[8] R-3 gave his date of birth as 10 Aug. and R-2 gave 8 Aug.

[9] R-3 gave her surname as Tremblay and R-2 gave it as Tromblee.

[10] R-3 gave their marriage date as 13 Oct. and R-2 gave it as 12 Oct.
