DESCENDANTS
OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND SARAH FISHER OF CULPEPER CO., VA AND KY
GENERATION
1
William Graves (1)
was probably born either 1755 or 1776, probably in Culpeper Co., VA. He may have married Sarah Fisher of
Culpeper Co., VA, possibly on 22 Dec. 1790. Another William Graves, son of Thomas Graves and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
of genealogy 270 has apparently been confused with this William, and the two
families have been blended together.
There is still much research to be done to get everything straightened
out. The children listed below
have been proven to be connected by DNA testing of their descendants, and
others will be added when DNA results or documentation shows they should be.
It has been noticed
that Alexander Reid Russell, descended from
Thomas Graves and Sarah Lawson of gen. 270, married Mary Etta Lowe in this
genealogy, and John Bell Peter, descended from Elizabeth Graves and Jesse Peter
of gen. 270, married Mary E. Isham in this genealogy. It is possible that the descendants of both that Thomas
Graves and that Elizabeth Graves also belong in this genealogy.
DNA testing of
descendants has shown that William Graves of this genealogy shares a common
Graves ancestry with Francis Graves of genealogy 220, and it is likely that
William was descended from Francis, possibly by way of John Graves of genealogy
56.

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)
John
Graves (2) was born 19 Aug. 1775, probably in VA, died 16 May 1839 (or 9 Nov.
1838) in Washington Co., KY, and was buried in the Graves Family Cem. on what
is now Jim Powell farm on Wesley Miller Road, near Mackville, KY. He first married Margaret (ÒPeggyÓ)
Stinnett, daughter of John Stinnett, on 2 Feb. 1795 in Mercer Co., KY. She was born in Aug. 1775 in Amherst
Co., VA, died 20 June 1836 in Washington Co., KY, and was also buried in the
Graves Family Cem. After Margaret
died, John married second Delilah (Smith) Bailey. The children listed below were all named in the will of John
Graves in Washington Co.
It was
previously thought that this John Graves was a son of Leonard Graves of Mercer
Co., KY, who first married Mariah Gordon and married second Sarah Brown, but
that does not appear to be so.
Matilda
Graves and William C. Graves are recorded as being born seven days apart;
apparently one of those dates is incorrect. However, those dates do appear on their tombstones. (R‑15, R‑18, R‑25)

Washington Co., KY, age 30-40 (b. 1800-1810), with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10,
1 female under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 20-30 (perhaps
his wife). In 1840 he was living next
to or near his uncles Uriah and William, and Zachariah Lawson who was probably
the husband of his aunt Nancy.
13. Nancy Graves, m(1) Berry Mayes, 28
Sept. 1835 (Washington Co., KY), m(2) Allen W. Mayes, 23 Oct. 1836 (Washington

+14. Felix Graves, b. 13 Jan. 1815, m. Mary Long, 23 Oct.
1839, d. 26 March 1896.
William
Graves, Jr. (3) was born about 1781 in Washington Co., KY, and died 24 Dec.
1850 (or in 1852). He married
Elizabeth (ÒBetsyÓ) Sweeney, daughter of Moses Sweeney (b. 1734 (near Belfast,
Antrim, Ireland), d. 27 June 1813 (Lincoln Co., KY) and Elizabeth Johnson (d.
1832), on 4 Aug. 1805 in Lincoln Co., KY.
Moses Sweeney was the witness.
Betsy was born about 1785 in Amherst Co., VA and died in Washington Co.,
KY, probably 18 June 1843. In
settlement of Elizabeth Sweeney's estate, a William Graves helped. William Graves also signed a receipt in
settlement of Moses Sweeney's estate, 4 Feb. 1815, Lincoln Co., Ky.
According
to Lincoln Co. Marriages & Tombstone
Inscriptions, by S. Dunn, 1780-1850, Old Drake Cem.: William Graves, 30
Jan. 1768-14 Dec. 1852, a soldier under Anthony Wayne.
According
to Virginia Genealogist, p. 120,
Henry Co. Wills: Will of William Graves of Henry Co., dated 12 May 1790, To my
son William Graves at his mother's death one Negro. Lists other children and is by William Graves, Sr.
According
to some people (R‑21, R‑22), William Graves married Peggy Graham on
11 July 1812 (or before 1810) in Harrodsburg, Mercer Co., KY, and had daughter
Sydney (Lyseney) Graves, b. 20 Aug. 1809 (or 1810) in Mercer Co., KY, and
married Michael Yankee (or Yankey) on 4 June 1827 in Mercer Co., KY. This seems to be in conflict with some
of the other information presented here, and it is not known which is correct. It appears that there may be two
different men named William Graves who married different wives in different
counties, but that is not clear.

Children - Graves
+15. Sydney Graves, b. 20 Aug. 1810, m. Michael Yankee, 4
June 1827, d. 19 July 1869.

Thomas Sims Graves (4) was born 13
(or 3) July 1794 in Culpeper Co., Va., and died 6 May 1859 in Nelson Co., Ky.
He moved from VA to Fayette Co., KY in 1817. He first married Harriet R. Gist (spelled Guest in one
source) on 4 March 1822 in Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY. She died in 1831 in Fayette Co., KY. He secondly married Mary E. Graves,
perhaps the daughter of Benjamin Graves and Sally Cole, on 11 Oct. 1833 in
Woodford Co., KY. Nelson Graves,
MaryÕs brother, was a witness on the marriage bond. (She was said by one source to be a daughter of his uncle
James Graves. It is not presently
clear which daughter this is; it might be the Elizabeth Graves who first
married Samuel McCoy.) Mary was
born about 1805 in VA.
The will of Thomas S. Graves was
made 25 Dec. 1858 and probated 13 June 1859.
"In the name of God and
trusting in him for life and salvation, I Thomas S. Graves of the county of
Nelson and State of Kentucky being weak of body though sound of mind and fully
admonished of making some disposition of my earthly goods do this day make and
declare this to be my last will and testament and desire the same to be
received and recorded as such.
First, it is my will and desire
that my farm and all the provisions for my family for the ensuing year shall
remain for the use and benefit of my family without sale or distribution. Second, at my death, all of my personal
and perishable property not otherwise disposed of to be sold immediately and
the farm sold at expiration of the incoming year. Third, it is my will and desire that two thousand dollars of
the proceeds of the sale of my farm shall be set apart as a fund to rept
(receive) interest for the maintenance and support of my beloved wife Mary
Graves and that she be fully provided for until said fund and interest becomes
available and at her death one thousand dollars of said fund is to be given and
paid to my daughter Sarah Ann Hobbs and also all the home furniture that may
remain after the death of my wife to be given to my daughter before named all
to be given to her and her bodily heirs for their own use and benefit and that
the remaining one thousand dollars of said fund after the death of my wife to
be equally divided between my two sons James E. Graves and Benjamin F. Graves
and my daughter Mary E. Smith her part for the purpose of aiding in the
education and support of her children she having the full control of the same.
Fourth, After the payment of all my
just debts and one thousand and fifty dollars paid over to my son Thomas B.
Graves and a good horse saddle and bridle given to my son Benjamin F. Graves or
that will be equivalent when he is twenty one years old then all of my estate
that remains and not otherwise disposed of to be equally divided between all of
my children to wit -- Edward W. Graves, William F. Graves, Thomas B. Graves,
James E. Graves, Benjamin F. Graves, Mary E. Smith, and Sarah Ann Hobbs that
part coming to my son Edward W. Graves I wish to be given to his son Thomas
Smith Graves and wish him to comply with this request.
Fifth, I wish my wife before any
sale of my personal property to give to my sons James and Benjamin a good bead
(bed?) and clothing such as I have heretofore given to my children.
Sixth, I hereby appoint my two sons
Edward and William Graves as my executors of this my last will and desire them
faithfully to comply with and execute all the provisions herein named and I
also appoint them as trustees for my two sons James and Benjamin to take care
of and manage Benjamin's part of my estate for him and attend to his education
and support until he is of lawful age and that part coming to my son James they
are to held as his trustee for his proper use and benefit until such time as in
their best judgement he has sufficiently studied himself so as to be fully
competent for the management of the same without kneedlessly waisting the same. Having duly disposed of all my estate
as in my judgement is best so to do I hereby set my hand this 25th day of Dec.
1858.

It was previously believed that
Thomas Sims Graves was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (genealogy
169), and that he was a son of William Graves and Sarah Fisher. Through DNA analysis, it has been
proven that he was not descended from Capt. Thomas Graves. Examination of census data has also
shown that the Thomas Graves who lived near the descendants of William Graves
was the one who was born about 1790 and married Sarah, and not Thomas Sims
Graves, substantiating the conclusion from the DNA results.
The 1830 census for Fayette Co.,
KY, page 352, lists 1 male 0-5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 30-40, 1
female 0-5, and 1 female 30-40.
Thomas and Mary were in the 1850 census for Nelson Co., KY, with
children Edward, Thomas, James, Sarah, and Benjamin. Mary was in the 1860 census for Nelson Co., KY, living with
her step‑son Thomas. (R‑1,

Woodford
Graves (16) was born about 1815 in Washington Co., KY, and died in 1863 in
Macoupin Co., IL. He was not shown
in the 1870 census, and his widow mentioned in a letter in 1871 that he was
dead. He married Caroline
("Carrie") Sweeney, daughter of Job Sweeney (b. 1778, d. 1871) and
his second wife Sarah (ÒSallyÓ) Edwards.
Carrie was born about 1819-22 in Casey Co., KY, and died in 1895 in
Macoupin Co., IL. They were buried
in Panter Creek Cem., Scottville, Macoupin Co., IL. Woodford and Caroline were listed in the 1850 census for
Casey Co., KY, with Betsey Edwards, age 16, but no children. One source listed 2 children born
before 1850, Lucinda, b. 1845, and Susan, b. 1849; however, if they were
children, they probably died before the 1850 census. The 1860 census for Macoupin Co., IL, listed Woodford, 46,
Caroline M., 40, Mariah L., 10, Clarada C., 7, Joshua B., 5, and Laura C., 2,
all born in KY. The 1870 census
for Macoupin Co., IL listed Carrie, 48, and her three children, all born in KY,
probably in Casey Co. (R‑16,
R‑18, R‑22)

Marinda
Elizabeth Graves (17), probably called Elizabeth or ÒLizzieÓ, was born about
1800-1820 in KY, and apparently died after 1840 and before 1850 (since a
female, age 20-30, was in the household of Milton Busby in the 1840 census, but
no wife was listed with him in 1850).
She married Milton Busby.
Their marriage date is noted in the Casey Co., KY marriage records. He was born about 1804 in VA. The family is in the 1840 census for
Washington Co., KY, page 112, and in the 1850 census for Mercer Co., KY, page
346, household 859. Also living in
the household in 1850 were Matilda Banks, 30, sister of Milton, Margaret Banks,
9, daughter of Matilda, and Edward Busby, 28, Òdeaf and dumbÓ, MiltonÕs
brother. MatildaÕs husband, Martin
W. Banks, had died before 1850 and evidently she had put herself and her daughter
under MiltonÕs care and protection.
All household members in 1850 were born in KY, except for Milton.
There is
a record of a land transfer in Washington Co. between Milton and a Thomas and
Sarah Graves (apparently LizzieÕs uncle) for 24¾ acres of land located
on GlenÕs Creek, dated April 3, 1845.
This land transfer might have had something to do with the death of
Lizzie, and perhaps this was her share of an estate settlement. 1845 would have been about when her
next child would have been expected, and perhaps she died in childbirth at that
time, although there is evidence that she had a child born in March 1846.
While
living in Washington Co., KY, Milton served in the Kentucky Legislature,
1841-1842. According to R‑78,
Milton and his family migrated to the Cotton Gin Community located in Freestone
Co., TX in the fall of 1851. He
served in the 6th TX Legislature in 1855-1856. A special census, ÒEnumeration of Free
White Population between the ages of 6 and 16 years of age in Freestone County,
TX, 1855Ó, shows Milton living in District 3 with his 3 children, all between
the ages of 6 and 16. No spouse is
shown. Also shown in the next
household is William W. Groover, his two children, John and Sarah Groover and
Margaret Banks, the same Margaret Banks found in the 1850 Mercer Co., KY
census. After her arrival in TX,
MargaretÕs mother, Matilda, had married for the second time in 1853 to William
W. Groover. Matilda was not shown
on this special census as only the heads of household were listed. Some reports state that MiltonÕs wife
died in the 1860Õs in TX. This
seems unlikely, since Marinda is not shown on the 1850 Mercer Co., KY
census. The only other likely possibility
would be if Milton married again after moving to TX, but no records have been
found to indicate this. Milton is
said to have died and been buried in Freestone Co., TX.
Milton,
his son David, and three of his brother DavidÕs children, John, Milton, and
Margaret, were recorded on the 1860 census in Freestone Co., TX. By 1870, the only Busby remaining from
the combined families was Edward Busby who was living in Limestone Co.,
TX. (R‑13)

James Edgar Graves (23) was born 18
July 1833 in KY, died 9 June 1913 in Laurel, MS, and was buried in Hickory
Grove Cem., Laurel, Jones Co., MS
He left Nelson Co., KY and, while visiting relatives in Missouri, joined
the Confederate Army. He served
under Generals Shelby, Marmaduke, and Captain Jepata, enlisting on Jan. 6, 1861
and serving until May 8, 1864 (Missouri Infantry, Company B, State Guard). He was a wagonmaster. He was captured when ordered to dump
the wagons in the river, while his comrades were retreating. He was taken to Gratiot Prison where he
was exchanged for Union soldiers.
He fought in the war until the south surrendered, and was released from
active duty in Meridian, MS.
James soon founded a household not
far from where he was released, in Newton Co., MS, near Decatur, possibly in
Carriet Mills. James first married
Martha C. Johnson about 1870. They
were listed in the 1870 census for Newton Co., MS. The 1870 census listed children Benjamin, age 3, and
William, age 4/12. It is believed
by the family that she died in childbirth or complications thereof. He married second Elizabeth B.
("Lizzie") Laird (from a nearby farm) on 23 Oct. 1875 in Newton Co.,
MS. She was born 8 May 1853 in MS,
died 18 July 1923 in Bernice, Union Parish, LA, and was buried in Weldon

of Jones Co., MS. His daughter
Sarah and her husband lived next to them.
They were recorded in the 1910 census of Laurel, Jones Co., MS with his
wife Elizabeth Laird and his youngest son Avery Graves. According to a Confederate Grave
Registration completed by his daughter Bessie, he was born July 18, 1833 and
died June 9, 1913. Ten of the 14
children of James Graves lived to adulthood. All his children were born in MS. (R‑1)

on 11 Nov. 1855. She was born
about 1826 in KY. They were in the
1850 census for Washington Co., KY, with 3 children, so they either must have
been married about 1844 or the children were hers by an earlier marriage. Uriah has not yet been found in the
1860 census, but the children with him in 1850 were living with Joseph Good and
Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑, their probable grandparents,
in the 1860 census for Washington Co., KY.

first marriage were born in KY, and all those by the second marriage were born
