Revised 28 Aug. 2000, Gen. 96

John Graves (1) was born in St. Mary's Co., MD, and was buried at Thomas Meeting House (Methodist). He married Sarah Noble (also spelled Nobile) in 1783 in St. Mary's Co., although a marriage record has not been found. She was born in St. Mary's Co., MD, and was buried at St. Charles Church Cem., St. Mary, Washington Co. (in what is now Marion Co.), KY. At least their first 5 children were born in St. Mary's Co., MD.

John was a non-Catholic, but didn't mind that Sarah raised the children as Catholics, as she was "a very pious lady."

They moved to KY before 1800, and settled on land later (in 1897) owned by Joseph Hagan in Marion Co., KY, when "it was a trackless wilderness." John was an energetic, useful and law-abiding citizen. (Much of this information is from John Mattingly's "Biographies", at the Filson Club, Louisville, KY.)

According to Catholic Families of Southern Maryland, Records of Catholic Residents of St. Mary's Co. in the Eighteenth Century, compiled by Timothy J. O'Rourke, 1985, adult white males were required to take an Oath of Allegience to the revolutionary government of Maryland, according to a law passed by the General Assembly in the February Session, 1777. Among those taking the oath in 1778 (all administered by Justice John Ireland): Jeremiah Graves, John Graves, and John B. Greaves.

According to Muster Rolls and Other Records of Service of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution, 1775-1783, Baltimore, 1900, John Graves was a member of the St. Mary's County company of Capt. Uriah Forrest, part of Col. Thomas Ewing's Battalion for the Flying Camp, mustered 28 July 1776. It is believed that this John Graves and the one who took the Oath of Allegience are the one who married Sarah Catherine Noble, but there is no proof.

It is likely that John Graves was descended from John Greaves of St. Mary's Co., MD (genealogy 247), but the connection is not known. (R-1, R-3, R-5, R-6)

George N. Graves (2) may have first married Maria Mattingly, and he was probably the George Graves who married Catherine Medley, daughter of John Medly (or Medley?), on 10 (or 12) Feb. 1810 in Washington Co., KY. Catherine was born in 1793 in MD, and died in 1865. She secondly married Ralph Leak, her brother-in-law and the father of a Dr. Leak who married a Miss Rhodes and lived at New Haven, KY. William Graves (3) died in 1833. He married Anne ("Nancy") Buckler on 11 Oct. 1808 (bond 6 Oct. 1808). William and Nancy lived on or near the farm that Ben Thompson owned in 1897. All their children were christened at St. Charles Church, St. Mary, Washington Co. (now Marion Co.), KY. (R-1, R-3)

Jessamine ("Jesse") A. Graves (4) was born before 8 Nov. 1796 according to Thompson, or born 28 Feb. 17-- according to Fr. Lyons. He died 30 Jan. 1866 (according to the St. Charles Cem. records), but Thompson says it was "before 1850 census of Marion Co."; the first date is probably correct, and he was probably alive but not included in the census in 1850. He married Elizabeth Gannon, daughter of James Gannon, on 11 Nov. 1817. She was born 12 Dec. 1800 in Ireland, and died 20 July 1852. They were both buried in St. Charles Cem., St. Mary, KY. +30. George Washington Graves, b. 4 Dec. 1832, m. Rose Philomena Johnson, d. 18 Jan. 1910.

Elizabeth Ann ("Betty" or "Betsy") Graves (6) was born in 1792. She married Henry ("Harry") Bickett (or Bicket or Beckett), third son of William Bickett and Jane Hart (questionable), shortly after the 5 Jan. 1810 marriage bond, in Raywick, Washington Co., KY. Henry was born about 1785 and died about 1854, probably in Marion Co., KY, according to the Marion Co. tax list. Betty must have died within 2 or 3 years after the birth of her daughter, Priscilla (about 1933-35), since Henry married again, and the first child of his second family was born in 1837. Henry's second wife was Jane Alvey Lamkin. He was a farmer, blacksmith, distiller, and miller. Living in Henry's home at the time of the 1850 census was "an 18 year old Kentucky native who attended school, James E. Graves." This was evidently Betty's nephew, James Elbert, son of William Graves. He may have been a sort of hired hand/boarder, as William Graves died in 1833 when James Elbert was only a year old.

The 1810 census of Garrard Co., p. 205, showed Henry Bickett, age 26 and under 45, 1; under age 10, 3; 16 but under 26, 1. He was newly married, so who were the children under 10? Could he have had a brief previous marriage? (R-1, R-3)

According to his obituary, he "was born in Lebanon Feb. 10, 1832, died July 19, 1894.

He entered the renowned St. Mary's College in 1844. Typhoid fever drove him home in 1847. He returned again in the fall and finished his studies in 1848.

In Sept. 1854 he married the beautiful and accomplished Ann T. Graves, who survives him. They had four children, two daughters and two sons. The eldest, the late Mrs. Will R. Spalding, was one of the loveliest women I ever knew, and Mrs. T. R. Spalding, still living, and Col. John B. Wathen. The youngest son, William Elbert Wathen, died at the age of 2 years and 8 months.

His was the happiest family I ever saw. He was ever dutiful and loyal to his family. Never so happy as when at home surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was for over four years the most popular postmaster Lebanon ever had. With this exception he was engaged in the mercantile business all his life. No man ever doubted his integrity or veracity. His word was law and gospel with his family and all others who knew him. He was one of the most popular men in Lebanon.

Mr. Wathen came of two of the most distinguished old families of the county, who settled here more than a hundred years ago. They were Catholics from Maryland, and founded St. Mary's College. His people filled all the higher walks of life, religious and social. Never did one of them dishonor his position but honored it.

The families were the Wathens and the Spaldings. In the field of religion were Archbishop M. J. Spalding, of Baltimore, the best man that I ever knew; Bishop J. Lancaster Spalding, of Peoria, Ill., the most brilliant pulpit orator in the Catholic Church of America; and numerous lesser lights. In State, they have on both sides, filled all the political and civil offices, from Congress all along down the lines, distinguished and honored." (R-3)
