farmer. He married Tabitha
Sanders, daughter of Nimrod Sanders and Mary Elizabeth Ricketts before
1829. She was born 21 July 1806 in
Montgomery Co., NC, died 15 Jan. 1892 in Etowah Co., AL, and was also buried in
Black Creek Cem. Their first 3
children were born in NC, the next one in GA, and the last 2 in AL. The family was in the 1850 and 1860 censuses
for Cherokee Co., AL; ÔTelithaÕ Graves, 64, born NC, and daughter Elizabeth,

his second wife Mary and their children.
He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about
1887. Sarah and Squire were
recorded on the 1860 census in De Kalb Co., AL, the 1870 census in Attalla,
Etowah Co., AL, and the 1880 census in Greenwood and Duck Springs, Etowah Co.,

Leonard H. Graves (4) was born 14
Nov. 1833 in NC (or AL), died 8 Aug. 1884 in Franklin Co., AR, and was buried
in Morgan Hill Cem., Franklin Co., AR about 4 miles south of Ozark. He married Louponia (variously spelled
Laponia or Lapina) Estes 1 Oct. 1854 in Floyd Co., GA. She was born about 1840 in AL, and died
in 1867 in Jackson Co., AL, and was also buried in Morgan Hill Cem., Franklin
Co., AR. All their children were
probably born in Jackson Co., AL, near Scottsboro, although it is possible at
least the first 2 may have been born in Cherokee Co., AL. Leonard then moved the family to Logan
Co. (or Franklin Co.), AR, across the Arkansas River from Ozark, AR, around

Mary Jane Graves (5) was born 3
March 1837 in GA, died 15 Jan. 1914 in Lebanon, De Kalb Co., AL, and was buried
in Lebanon Cem. She first married
Jessie M. Chandler, son of James Chandler and Elenner ‑‑‑‑‑‑
of SC. He was born about 1831 in
SC and died 13 Feb. 1863 in AL from wounds received in the Civil War. They lived in Scottsboro, Jackson Co.,
AL. He had papers for Cherokee
land in OK, but stayed in AL and did not claim it.
Mary Jane was keeping house for Dr.
George W. Morgan, her nephew, son of her sister Sarah and brother-in-law,
Squire Morgan. She was suffering
from cancer and became very sick while there. A few days before she died, her grandchildren took her to
their home; she had been living with them after her second husband died. In the Morgan family Bible the names of
Mary Jane and Tabitha were included with other Morgan family members, with no
last name given.
Mary Jane, recorded as Polly
Chandler, was listed with JessieÕs family in Cherokee Co., AL in 1860; in 1870
she was recorded as ÒMayÓ Chandler, age 40, with her children in Etowah Co., AL
living next door to her mother and sister Elizabeth. Thomas and Mary were born after Jessie ChandlerÕs death, but
they are listed with the Chandler surname in 1870 and 1880. In 1880, Mary was a Ô40Õ year-old widow
in De Kalb Co., AL.
She married second Elijah H. Dobbs
on 6 Dec. 1897 in De Kalb Co., AL (p. 580). He was born in May 1828 in TN, and died 16 Feb. 1901 in De
Kalb Co., AL. They were recorded

in Allen Cem., Allen, Pontotoc Co., OK.
Robert, age 22, and Frances, 25, were listed on the 1870 census in
Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL with Mary, age 1. Robert was listed on the 1880 census in Scottsboro, AL with
children Mollie, 8, Adah, 6, James 4, and his mother, Nancy, 76, born in SC. He also had a common-law wife, Lue
Berry. Bob was a brother of
Louponia Estes, wife of Leonard Graves.
It is not clear which of the children were by which wife. All the children were probably born in

growing grapes and fruit trees.
His occupation while living in Tussy, Indian Territory, was running a
grocery store. They were in the
1910 census for Kenna, Chaves Co., NM, living next to his sister Lucinda. Their first 2 children were born in Clarksville,
Johnson Co., AL, the next 6 in Tussy, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma), and

in the 1920Õs. He married Elva
Lucinda ("Tennie") Gazaway, daughter of William D. Fletcher Gazaway
and Cynthia Canzady Nichols, in 1885 in Franklin Co., AR. She married first John K. Herrington on
4 Feb. 1872 in Franklin Co., AR (Book B, p. 57) and had a daughter Luiza Jane,
born 16 Oct. 1872 who married Sam J. Weldon. She married second A. Jack Simmons on 4 June 1879 in
Franklin Co., AR (Book B, p. 439) and had a daughter Mary Frances Simmons, born
in March 1880 in Franklin Co., AR.
Tennie was born 1 March 1855 in KS, died 10 Feb. 1937 in Ada, Pontotoc
Co., OK, and was also buried in Memorial Park Cem. Their first three children were born in Peter Penders, Logan

in Okemah, OK. He married Cynthia
Canzady Gazaway, daughter of William F. D. Gazaway and Cynthia Cazady Nichols
of SC on 20 April 1886 in Franklin Co., AR (Book C, p. 337). She was born 17 March 1868 in Center
Cross, Franklin Co., AR, died 8 Feb. 1919 in Roseville, Franklin Co., AR, and
was buried in Nichols Chapel Cem., Franklin Co., AR. She committed suicide by drinking strychnine. Their first four children were born in
Center Cross, AR, and the last three in Roseville, Logan Co., AR.

[1] The family Bible gives her date of birth as 9 June 1910. However, the year appears to be wrong. The 1910 census, taken 20 May 1910, lists her age as 11 months, making her born in June 1909. Looking at the Bible entries, it is apparent that most of the entries were made at the same time, probably many years after the events, and someone made an error.
