William Graves (1) was born about 1796 in NC, died 22 Aug. 1870 in Etowah Co., AL, and was buried in Black Creek Cem., Etowah Co., AL. He was a farmer. He married Tabitha Sanders, daughter of Nimrod Sanders and Mary Elizabeth Ricketts before 1829. She was born 21 July 1806 in Montgomery Co., NC, died 15 Jan. 1892 in Etowah Co., AL, and was also buried in Black Creek Cem. Their first 3 children were born in NC, the next one in GA, and the last 2 in AL. The family was in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Cherokee Co., AL; ‘Telitha’ Graves, 64, born NC, and daughter Elizabeth, 25, born AL, were living in Attalla, Etowah Co., AL in 1870. (R‑2, R‑6, R‑8)

She married Squire Morgan, son of John Morgan, born NC, and Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of TN, about 1850. He was born in Nov. 1827 in AL, and died after 1900; he was recorded on the 1900 census with his second wife Mary and their children. He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1887. Sarah and Squire were recorded on the 1860 census in De Kalb Co., AL, the 1870 census in Attalla, Etowah Co., AL, and the 1880 census in Greenwood and Duck Springs, Etowah Co., AL. Aaron Graves (3) was born 17 Feb. 1831 in NC, died 16 Nov. 1891 in Clarksville, Johnson Co., AR, and was buried at Mt. Vernon (Woods Mtn.), Johnson Co., AR, north of Clarksville, AR. He married Jane Catherine Dunman, daughter of John Dunman and Elizabeth Carlton, on 13 (or 14) July 1853 in Cherokee Co., AL. She was born 16 Dec. 1826 in AL (or Dec. 1829 in GA), and was listed in the 1900 census as living with her daughter, Betty, in Coal Hill, Johnson Co., AR. Leonard H. Graves (4) was born 14 Nov. 1833 in NC (or AL), died 8 Aug. 1884 in Franklin Co., AR, and was buried in Morgan Hill Cem., Franklin Co., AR about 4 miles south of Ozark. He married Louponia (variously spelled Laponia or Lapina) Estes 1 Oct. 1854 in Floyd Co., GA. She was born about 1840 in AL, and died in 1867 in Jackson Co., AL, and was also buried in Morgan Hill Cem., Franklin Co., AR. All their children were probably born in Jackson Co., AL, near Scottsboro, although it is possible at least the first 2 may have been born in Cherokee Co., AL. Leonard then moved the family to Logan Co. (or Franklin Co.), AR, across the Arkansas River from Ozark, AR, around 1872 or 1873. (R‑3, R‑4, R‑8)

Mary Jane Graves (5) was born 3 March 1837 in GA, died 15 Jan. 1914 in Lebanon, De Kalb Co., AL, and was buried in Lebanon Cem. She first married Jessie M. Chandler, son of James Chandler and Elenner ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of SC. He was born about 1831 in SC and died 13 Feb. 1863 in AL from wounds received in the Civil War. They lived in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL. He had papers for Cherokee land in OK, but stayed in AL and did not claim it.

Mary Jane was keeping house for Dr. George W. Morgan, her nephew, son of her sister Sarah and brother-in-law, Squire Morgan. She was suffering from cancer and became very sick while there. A few days before she died, her grandchildren took her to their home; she had been living with them after her second husband died. In the Morgan family Bible the names of Mary Jane and Tabitha were included with other Morgan family members, with no last name given.

Mary Jane, recorded as Polly Chandler, was listed with Jessie’s family in Cherokee Co., AL in 1860; in 1870 she was recorded as “May” Chandler, age 40, with her children in Etowah Co., AL living next door to her mother and sister Elizabeth. Thomas and Mary were born after Jessie Chandler’s death, but they are listed with the Chandler surname in 1870 and 1880. In 1880, Mary was a ‘40’ year-old widow in De Kalb Co., AL.

She married second Elijah H. Dobbs on 6 Dec. 1897 in De Kalb Co., AL (p. 580). He was born in May 1828 in TN, and died 16 Feb. 1901 in De Kalb Co., AL. They were recorded on the 1900 census in De Kalb Co., AL, ED 67 Sheet 6A. (R‑3, R‑8)

Frances ("Fannie") Graves (7) was born about 1845 in Cherokee Co., AL. She married Robert ("Bob") Estes, son of Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑,about 1862. He was born 24 Dec. 1845 in Rome, Floyd Co., GA, died in 1924 in Cromwell, Seminole Co., OK, and was buried in Allen Cem., Allen, Pontotoc Co., OK. Robert, age 22, and Frances, 25, were listed on the 1870 census in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL with Mary, age 1. Robert was listed on the 1880 census in Scottsboro, AL with children Mollie, 8, Adah, 6, James 4, and his mother, Nancy, 76, born in SC. He also had a common-law wife, Lue Berry. Bob was a brother of Louponia Estes, wife of Leonard Graves. It is not clear which of the children were by which wife. All the children were probably born in Scottsboro, AL. (R‑3, R‑8)

Both were buried in Walnut Grove Cem., Altoona, AL. On the 1870 census his name was recorded as Washington. They were recorded on the 1900 census in Etowah Co., AL, ED 153, sheet 59A. Sarah was listed as Fidella S.; 7 of her 8 children were living. They were also recorded on the 1910 census in Brocks, Etowah Co., AL, ED 64, sheet 10A. The children were born in AL. (R‑3)

Rebecca Elizabeth ("Betty") Graves (14) was born 26 Aug. 1854 in Cherokee Co., AL (although the 1860 census in Cherokee Co., AL census taker listed her as 5 year-old Tabitha and the 1900 Johnson Co., AR census lists her birth information as Aug. 1861), died 8 June 1948 in Coal Hill, Johnson Co., AR (or in Russellville, Pope Co., AR), and was buried in Coal Hill Cem., Coal Hill, AR. She married David T. Bryan, son of William Bryan and Nancy Duckworth, on 28 Sept. 1878 in Blount Co., AL. He was born 19 June 1855 in Atlanta, GA, according to the 1900 census, died 8 Jan. 1927 in Coal Hill, AR, and was buried in Coal Hill Cem. He was a coal miner.

Their first three children were born in AL, and the next 3 in Coal Hill, AR. (R‑3)

Lucinda Frances Graves (17) was born 8 Feb. 1861 in Hanceville, Cullman Co., AL, and died 24 May 1926 in Pooleville, Carter Co., OK. She married Henry Godfrey Zimmerman, son of Henry Leonhard Heinrich (or Godfrey) Zimmerman and Jakolina Blandina Liston, on 6 Nov. 1880 in Blount Co., AL. His surname was changed to Liston. He was born 11 Feb. 1862 in Bridgeport, Belmont Co., OH, and died 5 Jan. 1945 in Roswell, Chaves Co., NM.

He was in the 1870 census for Pease, Belmont Co., OH, with his parents Henry and Caroline Zimmerman, born in Wurttemberg and Prussia respectively. He was in the 1880 census for Canton, Stark Co., OH, with his parents Henry and Henrietta Zimmerman, born in Bavaria and OH respectively. Lucinda and Henry were in the 1910 census for Kenna, Chaves Co., NM, when 8 of their 9 children were still living. They were in the 1920 and census for Roswell, Chaves Co., NM, with his parents born in Germany and Switzerland, and Charles Liston, 20, living with them.

Their first 4 children were born in Hanceville, Cullman Co., AL, the next 2 in Coal Hill, Johnson Co., AR, and the next 3 in Tussy, OK. If Charles Liston was a son, her was born about 1900 in TX. (R‑1, R‑10, R‑11)

He married Nancy Elizabeth (“Betty” or “Bettie”) Childress, daughter of Joel Childress and Margaret Gilliam, on 23 Feb. 1888 in Clarksville, Johnson Co., AL. She was born 10 Oct. 1868 in Galena, Stone Co., MO, and died 15 May 1958 in Chaves Co., NM. George was an exceptional gardener, growing grapes and fruit trees. His occupation while living in Tussy, Indian Territory, was running a grocery store. They were in the 1910 census for Kenna, Chaves Co., NM, living next to his sister Lucinda. Their first 2 children were born in Clarksville, Johnson Co., AL, the next 6 in Tussy, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma), and the last in Chaves Co., NM. William (“Will”) Wilson Graves (21) was born 1 (or 10) Jan. 1860 in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL, died 6 May 1939 in Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK, and was buried in Memorial Park Cem., Ada, OK. They moved from AR to Pontotoc Co., OK in the 1920’s. He married Elva Lucinda ("Tennie") Gazaway, daughter of William D. Fletcher Gazaway and Cynthia Canzady Nichols, in 1885 in Franklin Co., AR. She married first John K. Herrington on 4 Feb. 1872 in Franklin Co., AR (Book B, p. 57) and had a daughter Luiza Jane, born 16 Oct. 1872 who married Sam J. Weldon. She married second A. Jack Simmons on 4 June 1879 in Franklin Co., AR (Book B, p. 439) and had a daughter Mary Frances Simmons, born in March 1880 in Franklin Co., AR. Tennie was born 1 March 1855 in KS, died 10 Feb. 1937 in Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK, and was also buried in Memorial Park Cem. Their first three children were born in Peter Penders, Logan Co., AR, and the remaining children were born in Center Cross, Franklin Co., AR. The family was recorded on the 1900 census in Hogan, Franklin Co., AR, ED 191, sheet 14A.

General Hardy Graves (22), called Hardy, was born 12 April 1862 in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL, died 19 (or 20) Feb. 1940 in Henryetta, Okmulgee Co. (or Okemah, Okfuskee Co., OK, and was buried in Okemah, OK. He married Cynthia Canzady Gazaway, daughter of William F. D. Gazaway and Cynthia Cazady Nichols of SC on 20 April 1886 in Franklin Co., AR (Book C, p. 337). She was born 17 March 1868 in Center Cross, Franklin Co., AR, died 8 Feb. 1919 in Roseville, Franklin Co., AR, and was buried in Nichols Chapel Cem., Franklin Co., AR. She committed suicide by drinking strychnine. Their first four children were born in Center Cross, AR, and the last three in Roseville, Logan Co., AR.

John Wesley Graves (23) was born 15 April 1867 in Jackson Co., AL, near Scottsboro, and died 21 March 1950 (or 22 April 1951) in Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK. He married Mary Alena Maxwell, daughter of David B. Maxwell and Minerva Elizabeth Posey, on 23 Sept. 1892 in Etna, Franklin Co., AR. She was born 13 March (or April) 1876 in Roseville, Logan Co., AR, and died 19 May 1970 in Ada, OK. They were both buried at Memorial Park Cem., Ada, OK. They remained in Franklin Co., AR and vicinity until 1909. They then moved with their six older children to Garvin Co., OK, near Wynnewood. John W. Graves was a very intelligent man, with a magnetic personality, and a great sense of humor.
