DESCENDANTS OF JAMES
STEPHEN GRAVES AND ELIZA JANE WALKER OF NC AND MARSHALL CO. (FORMERLY BLOUNT
CO.), AL
GENERATION 1
James Stephen Graves (1) was born 5
Feb. 1806 (or 1813 according to R‑2) in NC, and was killed in 1852 when a
tree he was chopping down split as it fell and crushed his head against a rail
fence. This presumably occurred in
Marshall Co., AL. Listed as James
Graves, Jr., he married Eliza Jane Walker, daughter of Robert Walker and Jane
Bedford, on 7 July 1833[1]
in Blount Co., AL; consent given by Robert Walker, security by Doctor Graves,
Henry Parham, J.P. (Henry Jefferson
Parham married Nancy Graves, daughter of John Graves (Genealogy 102) and
Elizabeth Beeson.) Eliza was born 14
Aug. 1815 in SC, and died after 16 June 1880 in Jacksboro, Jack Co., TX where
she was recorded on the census living with son James T. and his family. R‑12 lists her date of birth as 17
Aug. 1815.
A portion of Blount Co., AL was
annexed to Marshall Co., AL in 1836. It
was in this portion of the county that James Graves lived when the 1850 census
of Marshall Co., AL was taken.
According to this census, all his children were born in AL.
The land where they lived later
became part of Etowah Co., AL. James
Graves was recorded as owning land in Township 11, Range 4 East, Marshall Co.,
AL on 11 Aug. 1848 and 2 Aug. 1849; Eliza J. Graves owned the same land 17 Oct.
1854 (after his death).
Eliza was listed as head of the
family on the 1860 census in Marshall Co., AL with James, Nancy, and
Robert. In 1870, Eliza was recorded on
the census in Lincoln Co., TN with Elizabeth (presumably her daughter) and
Olly, age 9. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3,
R‑9, R‑10, R‑12, R‑200)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF JAMES S. GRAVES (1) AND ELIZA JANE WALKER
William ("Walking Stick")
Graves (2) was born 24 March 1834 in Alabama, probably in Blount Co. before the
portion where they lived was annexed to Marshall Co., died 4 Feb. 1914 in
Graham, Young Co., TX, and was buried in Oak Grove Cem., Graham, TX according
to R‑9. He was called Walking
Stick Graves because he always carried a cane and walked everywhere. He married Amanda M. Chamness, daughter of
William Chamness and Letta ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 26
Dec. 1852 in Marshall Co., AL. She was
born 16 Jan. 1833 in AL, died 16 April 1909 in Jacksboro, Jack Co., TX, and was
buried in Graves Cem., Jack Co., TX according to R‑9. They were listed in the 1860 census for P.O.
Bennetsville, St. Clair Co., AL, with children William and Mary Jane. He was a wagon maker. They apparently divorced before 1896.
William and Mandy were recorded on
the 1880 census in Antoine Twp., Pike Co., AR with children Jesse, Sarah, and
widowed daughter Mary Vaughn.
Amanda married second Harris Ward
on 10 Aug. 1896 in Jack Co., TX. Harris
was born in March 1848 in Illinois according to the 1900 census for Jack Co.,
TX. Amanda is listed as having had seven
children, with three still living. Her
parents’ places of birth are listed as Illinois for her father and Alabama for
her mother.
According to R‑5, William was
a farmer. On the 1910 census for
Montgomery Co., AR, where he was listed as a 76-year-old widower, it is
recorded that his father was born in VA and his mother in NC; the 1880 census
also recorded the same birthplaces.
A family story from R‑5 was
that William’s father was also named William Graves, that he lived in middle
TN, and owned a general store when he was killed by a falling tree. Another family story is that the family went
to TN from NC, and before that to VA from England.
William was a Baptist preacher
(Hardshell Baptist), advocating missions at home rather than abroad. R‑5 wrote: "Family stories were
that there were 5 boys. One was my
grandfather Roy Oscar's favorite uncle, Fate.
He always talked of going to visit him and that he, Fate, was out west. My Aunt Margie thinks California. Russell Phillips says that Fate was in Lubbock,
Texas when his family moved there. Old
William and Fate met their train when they moved to Texas.” (R‑2, R‑3, R‑4, R‑5,
R‑9, R‑17)

Wolgamott, born 1915, who said she was 4 or 5 when he died.) He married Melita Elizabeth Chambliss, daughter

(born SC), in 1855. Melita was born 17
Nov. 1834 in TN, died 15 March 1902 in Fort Douglas, AR, and was buried
there. Jesse and Melita supposedly
eloped on a mule across the state line from Pulaski, TN to AL because they were
too young to marry, according to Hester Wolgamott.
They migrated from AL through TN,
then moved to Johnson Co., AR about 1875, settling about 20 miles north of
