DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES AND FRANCES CHILDERS

OF NC AND BLOUNT CO., AL

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

James Graves (1) was born about 1790 in NC, and died 12 Dec. 1873 at the residence of his son, Houston, in Blount Co., AL.  He married Frances Childers in NC.  She was born about 1790 in NC, and died after June 1860 when she was listed on the census for Blount Co., AL.  They were both buried at Gibbs Chapel Cem.  He appeared in the 1830 census of Blount Co., AL, with 2 males under 5, 2 males 5 to 10, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5 to 10, and 1 female 30 to 40 (his wife).  He was not in the 1840 census, but was again listed in Blount Co. in 1850.  By this time, three of his older sons had married and appeared in the Blount Co. census with their families. An account of the administration of the estate of James Graves appears in Book A, Probate Records, Blount Co., AL.  J. W. Moore was appointed administrator.  In the administration records for the estate of James, it was stated that son John Graves was then living in Greene Co., AL; that Franklin Graves was then a resident of Morgan Co., AL; and that son Charles Graves had gone to Louisiana, where he died, leaving heirs, but their names were unknown.

There may have been other children in addition to those listed below.  All the children shown were born in AL, probably in Blount Co.  (R‑2, R‑6, R‑200)

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVES (1) AND FRANCES CHILDERS

John Graves, Jr. (2) was born about 1820 in Blount Co., AL, and died after 1880, probably in Greene Co., AL.  A John Graves was recorded on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Union, Greene Co., AL; he was a blacksmith.  On the 1880 census, a checkmark was placed in the widowed/divorced column for John.  He married Nellie (or Nelly) ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1821 in SC.  They were recorded on the 1850 census in Blount Co., AL.  On 22 Dec. 1865 in the Blount Co., AL Probate Minute Book K, p. 383, James Graves, Sr., Grandfather ‘preys the court to be appointed Guardian of estate of Margaret Graves”.  In the estate settlement of James Graves Sr., Book G, p. 162, 1874-78, son John is mentioned living in Greene Co., AL.  (R‑2, R‑200)

Franklin (or Frank C.) Graves (3) was born 19 May 1820 in Blount Co., AL, and died after Sept. 1886.  He was a harness, saddle and shoe maker.  He married Mary Mayfield on 17 Nov. 1839 in Blount Co., AL.  She was born about 1815 in AL.  This family was recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Blount Co., AL.  Their children were born in AL.  (R‑2, R‑200)

Martha ("Patsy") Graves (4) was born about 1825 in AL, and died in 1895.  She married Little Berry Scott, son of Patrick Scott and Elizabeth Temperance (“Tempie”) Berry, about 1845.  Her sister Nancy married his brother Mahlon.  Berry was born 19 June 1818 in Blount Co., AL, and died after 1870.  This family was recorded on the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in Blount Co., AL.  Their children were born in Brooksville, Blount Co., AL.  (R‑2, R‑6, R‑7, R‑10)

Jesse Graves (5) was born about 1830 in Blount Co., AL, and died before 1859.  He married Seviller (“Nelly”) Hyatt, daughter of Jesse Hyatt and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 14 Dec. 1847 (or 1848) in Lincoln Co., TN.  She was born about 1825 in AL, and died after 1880.  The 1850 census for Blount Co., AL listed Jesse Graves, age 20, with wife Nellie, age 25, and son James Graves, age 2, all born in AL.  Also living in the household were Elizabeth Hyatt, 55, born in SC and Manda Hyatt, 18, born in AL.  Nelly Graves married Eli Sullivan on 1 March 1859[1] in Blount Co., AL.  The 1860 census for Blount Co., AL lists Eli W. Sullivan, wife Ellen, age 37, and six children including daughter Savilla Sullivan [sic], 10.  In 1880, Eli and ‘Nelley’ were recorded in Fayette Co., AL near her daughter ‘Surviller’ and son-in-law Olinthus.  In the administration of the estate of James Graves (Jesse's father), the statement was made that Savilla White, Fayette Co., AL, was an heir of Jesse.  (R‑2, R‑14, R‑200)

Nancy Graves (6) was born about 1830 in AL, and died after 1880.  She married Mahlon Scott, son of Patrick Scott and Elizabeth Temperance (“Tempie”) Berry.  Her sister Martha married his brother Berry.  Mahlon was born about 1827 in AL, and also died after 1880.  This family was recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Blount Co., AL, and the 1880 census in St. Clair Co., AL.  In 1880 the children still living with their parents were:  Mary, 23, Joanna, 21, Elizabeth, 18, Dellaward, 13, and John, 12, all born in AL.  (R‑2)

Charles B. Graves (7) was born about 1835 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1873 in LA.  He married Mary Ann Jenkins on 22 July 1852 in Blount Co., AL.  Ed Wood was appointed guardian of minor daughters when Charles died in LA.  (R‑2)

Houston Graves (9) was born 5 Aug. 1842 in Liberty, Blount Co., AL, died 9 July 1929, in Blount Co., AL, and was buried at Gibbs Chapel Cem.  He married Mary McDaniel on 6 Jan. 1860 in Blount Co., AL.  Houston and Mary lived all of their married life on a farm at Liberty, Blount Co., AL.  She was born 28 Oct. 1841, died 11 July 1905, and was also buried in Gibbs Chapel Cem.  They had 11 children, 41 grandchildren and 93 great-grandchildren.

Houston served with Co. A, 48th Alabama Inf. during the Civil War, and filed for a soldier’s pension in 1913.  He was on the Blount County Muster Roll of Capt. A. J. Allridge (or Allredge) Company of the 48th Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, in the service of the Confederate States for three years of during the war unless sooner discharged.  He is listed along with his brothers Franklin and Charles and a Hastin Graves.  Houston enlisted April 7, 1862.  He was wounded at Manassas, and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland.  He was on the list of killed and injured in Tallfarro's Brigade from the time General Lee took command at Gordonsville until the army left the valley camp near Snickersnec (?) in Jan. 1863.  The roster shows last pay March 30, 1863.  One report shows he was paroled and home on leave at time of surrender, and another report says he deserted.  One record shows he was captured at Deep Bottom, VA, Aug. 14, 1864, and was held until the end of the Civil War, April 9, 1865.  It is probable that some of these records belong to nephews or others of the same name.  When he registered with the State of Alabama on 2 March 1921 as a pensioner of the State, all his children were living.  Miss Alice Graves of Liberty, AL was listed as a mute; no indication was given that she was also blind.

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES, JR. (2) AND NELLIE ------

Margaret (or Margarette[2]) Graves (10) was born 30 June 1849 in Blount Co., AL, and died 8 July 1928 in Blount Co., AL.  She married William Greenberry McAbee, son of Abner McAbee and Louiza ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 18 Dec. 1870 in Blount Co., AL.  He was born 14 (or 25) Dec. 1838 in Spartanburg Co., SC, and died 26 Nov. 1915 in Blount Co., AL.  He was known as Green McAbee.  His family moved from SC to Cherokee Co., GA and then to Blount Co. around 1850.  They were both buried in Gibbs Chapel Cem., Blount Co., AL.

William first married Jane Dunn and had 3 children by that marriage: Louisa A. (or Eliza) McAbee, b.c. 1866; Madora (“Dora”) McAbee, b.c. 1868; and Alliana J. McAbee, b.c. 1870.  The 1880 census for Blount Co., AL lists these 3 children plus the first 3 children by Margaret.  At least the first 3 children listed below were born in Blount Co., AL.  This family was also recorded on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Liberty, Blount Co., AL.  In 1910 only four of Margaret’s eight children were alive.

The following information about William was in the 1907 Blount Co. Confederate Census: Enlisted as a private 14 Oct. 1862 at Huntsville, Alabama in Captain George W. Arnold’s Company E of the 26th Alabama Regiment.  Continued in service until discharged at Tyner Station, Tennessee 13 Nov. 1863 because of rheumatism.  (R‑4)

William Elbert Scott (17) was born 29 July 1845 in Brooksville, Blount Co., AL, and died in 3 July 1919 in Warrior, Jefferson Co., AL.  He married Margaret Proctor, daughter of William Proctor and Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 5 March 1865 in Blount Co., AL (page 331).  She was born 4 July 1846 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1923 in Jefferson, AL.  This family was recorded on the 1880 census in Blountsville, Blount Co., AL and the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Warrior, AL.  He was a blacksmith, and all his sons reported their occupation as blacksmith on at least one census after 1900.  (R‑6, R‑7)

Gracie Scott (19) was born in Feb. 1850 in Brooksville, Blount Co., AL, and died 7 March 1926 in Elmore City, Garvin Co., OK.  She married John Frances (or Francis) Nation (or Nations), son of William E. Nation and Eliza Courtney Yielding, on 25 May 1886 in Blount Co., AL (page 296).  He was born 29 June 1854 in Oneonta, Blount Co., AL, and died 30 Nov. 1928 in Elmore City, OK.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Pocahontas Dist., Blount Co., AL and the 1910 and 1920 censuses in Elmore, OK.  Gracie stated that only two of her five children were living in 1900 and 1910.  Also recorded in their household on the 1910 census was a 6-year old granddaughter, Vider Graves, born in TX.

John first married Barbara Isabella (“Belle”) Cornelius, daughter of Champion Cargill Cornelius, Jr. and Emily Daily, on 15 Nov. 1872 in Blount Co., AL.  She was born 24 Oct. 1854 in Blount Co., AL.  John and his first wife were listed on the 1880 census in Blount Co., AL.  (R‑7, R‑10)

James Scott (20) was born 12 Aug. 1850 in Brooksville, Blount Co., AL, and died 7 Aug. 1907 in Blount Co., AL.  He married Martha I. Dickson on 30 Sept. 1876 in Blount Co., AL, (page 345).  She was born in Aug. 1862 in AL.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Brooksville, AL.  Their children were born in AL.  (R‑6)

Missouri Scott (21) was born in Dec. 1855 in AL, and died after 1920.  She married Fleming Nation, son of Jonathan Nation and Juliett C. Hood, on 20 Nov. 1873 in Blount Co., AL (page 153).  He was born April 1854 in AL, and died after 1920.  His name was also spelled Flemmon and Flemon.  There is a death recorded in Jefferson Co., AL for a Flemon Nation in Dec. 1938.  This family was recorded on the 1880 census in Blount Co., AL and the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses in Jefferson Co., AL.  Their children were born in AL.  By 1910 only seven of Missouri’s nine children were living.  (R‑7, R‑10)

Feemster on 28 Nov. 1876 in Blount Co., AL (page 267).  She was born in Jan. 1859 in AL, and died in Jan. 1929 in Etowah Co., AL (V. 3, roll 3, page 1227).  This family was recorded on the 1900 and 1910 census in Etowah Co., AL.  Their children were born in AL.  (R‑7)

Hyatt on 8 Jan. 1885 in Blount Co., AL (page 188).  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Brooksville, AL.  She was born in Oct. 1865 in Brooksville, AL.  He married second Lou (Nelson) Hyatt about 1910.  She was born 7 Nov. 1868 and 22 July 1937, both in Brooksville, AL.  Patrick and Lou were recorded on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses in Brooksville, AL.  Lou was first married to William S. Hyatt; her six children from her first marriage were recorded with her and Patrick on the 1910 census.  (R‑6)

Seviller (or Savilla) Graves (28) was born 8 Aug. 1851 in AL, died 24 Nov. 1888 in Fayette Co., AL, and was buried in Ballard Cem., Fayette Co., AL.  She married Olinthus (or Olynthus) Alison White, son of Medley Lafayette White and Clary M. Trawick, on 20 Feb. 1868[3] in Blount Co., AL.  Her uncle L. B. Scott (Little Berry Scott) is listed on her marriage certificate.  Olinthus was born in Oct. 1847 in AL, died 31 March 1923 in Fayette Co., AL, and was buried in Old Union Primitive Baptist Church Cem., Fayette Co., AL.  This family was listed on the 1870 census in Etowah Co., AL and the 1880 census in Fayette Co., AL; their children were born in AL.  Olinthus married second Elizabeth Campbell on 3 April 1890 in Fayette Co., AL.  (R‑14, R‑15)

John Houston Graves (42) was born in Nov. 1860 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1927.  He first married Lydia Jane Ballew, daughter of George Francis Ballew and Catherine Moon, on 4 Nov. 1880 in Blount Co., AL (p. 262).  She was born 8 Dec. 1864 and died 30 Nov. 1902, both in Blount Co., AL, and was buried in Gibbs Chapel Cem., Brooksville, Blount Co., AL.  He married second Kate VanZandt about 1904.  She was born about 1872 in AL, and died after 1930.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Liberty, Blount Co., AL, the 1910 census in Pocahontas Precinct 4, Blount Co., AL and the 1920 census in Elmore, Garvin Co., OK.  Kate was recorded on the 1930 census in Elmore City, OK as a 58-year old widow; daughters Anna and Dicie lived with her.  (R‑2, R‑3, R‑9, R‑11, R‑201)

Graves (44) was born in March 1866 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1946.  He married Cora Ann Gibbs, daughter of Harvey Jasper Gibbs and Jennetta Clayton, on 26 Dec. 1886 in Blount Co., AL.  She was born in Feb. 1870 in AL, and died after 1920.  They were recorded on the 1900 census in Liberty, Blount Co., AL with five children, Noah through Mary born in AL, and in the 1920 and 1930 censuses in Elmore, Garvin Co., OK.  Although recorded as Mandy on the 1900 census, their second daughter was actually Maud.  Haskell and M. P. were the only children living with them in 1920, both born in OK.  James married second Rodie A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1862 in TX and first married at age 15, about 1877.  They were recorded on the 1930 census in Elmore, OK.  (R‑2, R‑5)

Graves (48) was born in Feb. 1877 in Blount Co., AL, and died in 1960.  She married Sylvester (“Bess”) Monroe Nation, son of John Francis Nation and his first wife Barbara Isabella Cornelius, after 20 June 1900, when Sylvester was recorded as a single man on the 1900 census with his father and stepmother in Blount Co., AL.  He was born 14 Nov. 1878 in Blount Co., AL, and died before 1920.  Sylvester’s date of birth is taken from his World War I Draft Registration Card.  This family was recorded on the 1910 census in Elmore, Garvin Co., AL.  At that time, five of Martha’s six children were living.  Their first child was born in AL and the rest in OK.  In 1920 “Mattie” was listed as a 42-year old widow in Elmore, OK.  (R‑2)
