Revised 27 Sept. 2005, Gen. 103

DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND SARAH FORD

OF SC & FRANKLIN CO., MS

GENERATION 1

William Graves (1) was born 1780-90 in SC, and died before 11 March 1849 in Franklin Co., MS.  He married Sarah Ford, daughter of Thomas Ford and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  Information on the following children is from Deed Book D, Franklin Co., MS, and census records.

DNA testing has shown that this family is descended from the Graves family of Halifax Co. and Caroline Co., VA (genealogy 145 et al).

Based partly on names, it seems possible that this William Graves was descended from the Graves family of Spotsylvania Co., VA (partly because of the names Bartlett and Osborne), possibly from Thomas Graves (b. by 1721) and Isabella Susan Bartlett.  There was a son of this Thomas named Bartlett O. Graves.  It appears that most of this family went to KY, but some of the Spotsylvania Co. group were in SC, at least for a while.  Although this connection with the Graves family of Spotsylvania Co. is probably wrong, this has not yet been proven by DNA analysis.  (R‑2)

John Quincy Adams Graves (7) was born 19 Feb. 1839 in District One, Franklin Co., MS, and died about 22 May 1894 in Franklin Co.

According to a biographical sketch written by his grandson, John Seab Graves, his name was John Quitman Graves and he was named for John Anthony Quitman who was a prominent politician of Natchez, former governor of Miss. in the 1850's, and a volunteer Mexican War hero. However, both Barbara Celotto and Kirby Maxwell Graves (son of John Q. A. Graves, Jr.) say the name was John Quincy Adams Graves.

He grew up in Mississippi to be a farmer.  He homesteaded or bought a large tract of land bordering on Well's Creek, where he worked and lived until he died in 1901 at the age of 62.  His farm and home were near what later became the village of Roxie, named for his baby daughter Roxie.  It is said that because of his high standing as a citizen, the citizens were glad to honor him and his daughter in naming the town for her.

He served in the Regimental Band of the 4th Volunteer Miss. Regt. in the Civil War.  While in the army at Pensacola, Florida, he joined the Baptist Church, and when the war ended, he had his membership transferred to Union Baptist Church in Franklin Co.  He was a devout member of this church, and was an enthusiastic worker in it from the time he joined until he passed away.

He was a staunch member of the S. B. Stampley Lodge as early as 1868, and was elected County Supervisor of his District some time in the 1880's.  He served so well and with such distinction that he was re-elected from term to term until he passed away.

He first married Sicily M. Darsey, sister of Francis H. Darsey, on 18 June 1859.  She was born in 1841 in Franklin Co., Miss., and died in 1887 at the age of 45.

He secondly married Emma Wilkinson of Roxie, Miss. in 1889.  (R‑1)

James F. Joe Graves (youngest son) said there was a big split in the family when Jim married Ella.  He feels bitter toward Osborne Monroe and John because he said they did not help him and his mother after his father died.  After Jim’s death, Mazie and Sally went to Vicksburg and stayed with Sicily for a while.

Billy Lea said that Mary Ella and Joe went to live with John Quincy and Queen Victoria for a short time, but the women did not get along and they left.  (R‑2, R‑5)

According to Bessie Rollins, 10 May 1989: “Bill farmed for Luther Whittington all his life.  Phebia was paralyzed and her tongue shook all the time for a good many years before she died.  She had white hair that was kept cut short like a man’s.  Bessie Rollins and Louis Graves stayed with her.  When Bessie was 15 she returned home, and Fannie and Zack Norris took care of her until Fannie became too sick to care for her.  Bill was deaf all his life.”

CHILDREN OF JOHN Q. A. GRAVES (7)

William Henry Graves (18) was born in 1858 in Franklin Co., Miss., and died in 1924 in Roxie, Franklin Co., Miss.  He married Helena Marie Seab, daughter of Joseph Seab and Mary Helen Nienaber, about 1881.  She was born in 1857 on the Seab farm in Franklin Co., 3 miles east of what later became Roxie, and died in 1923 in Roxie, Franklin Co., MS.  They were both buried in the Union Baptist Church Cem. on the Roxie-Whiteapple road, Franklin Co.  Both her parents were born in Germany.

According to his son, John Seab Graves, William "grew up as a farmer boy and didn't get much schooling, and it may not have been his fault or a choice of his as the Civil War freed the colored man when he was a boy 7 or 8 years old which, no doubt, put him in the field to help make ends meet.  My daddy was what I would call a bootstrap individual and lifted himself up by his own bootstraps so to speak and made his way through the world like many others before him had done, without any education to speak of."

"My father became a member of the Board of Supervisors of Franklin County when I was a small boy, perhaps even before I was born, and remained in that office until he passed away.  My father later entered politics in a local way, not long after he married.  I imagine he got the inspiration from his father."

The family was in the 1910 census for Beat 1, Franklin Co., MS, page 19B, with children Myrtle, 15, and Helena M., 11, and boarder Tommie Graves, 15.  The 1920 census for Roxie, Franklin Co., MS, page 8B, listed only daughter Helena, 22, still at home.  (R‑1, R‑5)

[1] Recorded in Book 3, page 122.  Married by Asa J. Guice, who was the bondsman.

[2] After 17 March 1852, when he was bondsman for the marriage of Amelia C. Corban and Samuel Wharton, and before 13 Sept. 1852.

[3] Book 3, page 22, Thomas H. Corban, bondsman, and married by C. C. Campbell.

[4] A birth date of 1844 was given by one source, but that seems unlikely, since his mother was born in 1830 and his parents married in 1846.

[5] He may have been born in 1851.  He was not in the 1850 census, his father was deceased before Sept. 1852, and he had a younger brother.  The date of birth on his tombstone is 1844, but that is clearly wrong, since he wasn’t in the 1850 census and his parents weren’t married until 1846.

[6] F. M. Aldridge was bondsman (Book 6, page 93).
