Rev. 16 Oct. 2006, Gen. 104
DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN
GRAVES AND MARGRETT WEEVER OF SC & AL
GENERATION 1
Benjamin Graves (1) was born
1770-1780, and died before 1850 in AL.
He married Margaret (or Margrett) Weever. She was probably born about 1790 in NC, but may have been born
1770-1780[1]. They lived in SC, probably in Greenville
Co., and moved to AL before 1840.
Benjamin was in the 1840 census for
Fayette Co., AL, with 1 male 10-15, 1 male 60-70 (him), 1 female 5-10, and 1
female 20-30. He was probably the one
in the 1830 census for Greenville Co., SC, with 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1
male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60 (him), 2 females under 5, 1 female
15-20, and 1 female 50-60. The only
other Graves in the 1820 and 1830 censuses for Greenville Co., SC, was Joel
Graves, 40-50 in 1830 (b.c. 1790-1800), who has not been identified. Benjamin Graves has not been found in a
census before 1830. Joel Graves, 26-45,
was in the 1820 census for Greenville Co., SC.
The 1840 census of Fayette Co., AL
also listed a Thomas Graves, 60-70 (b. 1770-1780, the same age as Benjamin).
With 3 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 30-40, and 1 female 60-70. The 1850 census for Beat 9, Div. 16, Fayette
Co., AL, listed the following families living next to each other: John Graves,
15, and wife Mary, George Graves, 36, and wife Nancy J., with children, and
Margret Graves, 60, with daughter Elizabeth, 23. Living nearby was Sarah M. Graves, 28, with children Margaret E.,
6, and Mary E., 3; perhaps John and George were brothers, Sarah was the widow
of another brother, and Margret was their mother. In this genealogy it will be assumed that George did have brothers
John and an unknown brother who married Sarah, but proof of that needs to be
looked for and found. (R‑1)

March 1902.

16, Fayette Co., AL, and in the 1860 census for Western Div., Fayette Co., AL. She was in the 1870 census for Lawrence,
Sanford Co., AL. (The area that became
Lamar Co., AL was created as Jones Co. from Fayette and 2 other counties in

1868, and the name was changed to Lamar Co. in 1877.)

probable brother George Graves, with no children. In the 1860 census for Western Div., Fayette Co., AL, John and
his family were household 417; 416 was the family of Martin Laurance, 45, and
Margret, 39, SC, 415 was George Greaves and Nancy, and 420 was Sarah M.
Graves. They were in the 1870 census
for Twp. 14, Range 14, Sanford Co., AL.

Buncombe, Texas (also spelled
Bumcomb, Bunkom, Bunkum) is located off Farm Road 1970, nine miles south of
Carthage, in southwestern Panola County.
It was probably established after the Civil War. A school known as Alpine opened there around
1884, and a post office operated at the community from 1891 until 1893. In the mid-1930's the small settlement had a
school, a church, a cemetery, and a number of houses. After World War II the school was consolidated with that of
Clayton, and by the mid-1960's only a church, a cemetery, and a few scattered
houses remained in the area. In 1990
Buncombe was a dispersed rural community with an estimated population of 87.[5] (R‑4)

[1] If the Margret Graves in the 1850 census for Fayette Co., AL was the wife of Benjamin, then she was born about 1790. However, if Benjamin’s wife had died by 1840, the Margret born 1790 could be his daughter, and the female born 1770-1780 in the 1830 census for Greenville Co., SC could be his wife.
