She was born about 1785 in St. Bartholomews Parish, Charleston District, SC, and died in 1845 in St. Bartholomews Parish, Colleton Co., SC. She was born about 1823 or 1825 in St. Bartholmews Parish, and died 11 May 1905, both in Colleton Co., SC. Neither Elizabeth nor daughter Sarah have been found in either the 1850 or 1860 censuses. Henry Graves (6) was born about 1822 in St. Bartholomew Parish, Colleton Co., SC, and died after 1880. According to R‑2, his full name was John Henry Graves. He married Adeline Blocker by 1850. She was born about 1833 in SC, and died between 1860 and 1870. They were recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in St. Bartholomews Parish, Colleton Co., SC; their children were born in SC. In the 1850 census, Mary Graves, 50, and Mary Blocker, 51, were living with them. Henry was recorded on the 1870 census in Bowen Twp., Colleton Co., SC, post office Walterboro and the 1880 census in Heyward, Colleton Co., SC. He was a wheelwright in 1850 and 1860, and a farmer in 1870 and 1880. (R‑2, R‑7)

His name was given as Stanfield by R‑3, but it is spelled Stanfill in the 1860 and 1870 census records. They were recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses for St. Bartholomews Parish, Colleton Co., SC; he was an overseer. Their children were born in SC. Elizabeth was recorded on the 1870 census for Verdier Twp., Colleton Co., SC, with 5 of her children and no husband. Daughter Mary was the head of the family on the 1880 census in Gregg, Aiken Co., SC. Clara and William lived with her. They were recorded under the name of Stanfield. (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF JOHN S. GRAVES (4) AND ANN M. DeWITT

Mary Martha Graves (20) was born about 1842[1] in SC, and died 6 Nov. 1904. She married Michael Heirs Carter, son of John Coker B. Carter and Harriet Linder, in 1873. He was born 11 July 1855 (or 1854) in Hendersonville, Colleton Co., SC, and died 3 April 1921 in Colleton Co., SC. They were in the 1880 and 1900 censuses for Heyward Twp., Colleton Co., SC. He was a farmer in 1880 and a merchant in 1900. All their children were born in SC, probably all in Colleton Co. After Mary died, Michael married second Laura E. Rentz, daughter of John W. Rentz and Martha (“Patty”) Goodwin, on 24 Feb. 1907 in SC. (R‑8, R‑9)

James Proctor Graves (22) was born in July 1844 in SC, and died in 1915. He married Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Humphreys (or Humphries) about 1891. She was born in May 1854 in SC. She had previously been married to William Humphreys, was in the 1880 census for Bluffton, Beaufort Co., SC, and probably had 9 children with him. James and Elizabeth were in the 1900 census for Warren, Colleton Co., SC. He was a farmer.

They were in the 1900 census for Bluffton, SC, when 8 of their 10 children were still living. He was a farmer. All their children were born in SC.

He married Virginia Caroline Bunton, daughter of James F. Bunton and Caroline ‑‑‑‑‑‑, about 1874. She was born in March 1852 in SC, and died about 1921. They were recorded on the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses in Heyward Twp., Colleton Co., SC; their children were born in SC. In 1900, Virginia stated that eight of her thirteen children were living. He was a blacksmith. (R‑7)
