Rev. 18 Dec. 2020, Gen. 113
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND ELIZABETH PINKERTON
OF YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) was born in 1714 and died in 1793. He married Elizabeth Pinkerton. This genealogy may be closely related to genealogy 331 (Robert Graves of Deighton and Skelton, Yorkshire) and possibly genealogy 114 (William Greaves and Sarah Burland of Pontefract, Yorkshire), although no known male Greaves descendants of 114, and different spelling of surname. Snaith and Pontefract are only about 27 miles apart. Deighton is about 7 miles north of Snaith, and Skelton is about another 9 miles north of Deighton (on the other side of York). (R‑2)
According to R‑11, Thomas Graves (born 1776) was a son of Thomas Graves (b. 1755 in Carlton, Yorkshire, d. 29 June 1776) and Hannah Hutchinson, who was a son of Thomas Graves (b. 12 Sept. 1731 in Rothwell, d. 8 March 1778 in Rothwell) and Hannah Stephenson, who was a son of George Graves (b. April 1702 in Stillingfleet, Yorkshire, d. 1734 in Rothwell, Yorkshire) and Sarah Walton, who was a son of Richard Graves (b. Oct. 1675 in Stillingfleet, Yorks., d. 6 May 1712 in Bradfield, Yorks.) and Margaret Gill.

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH PINKERTON
Thomas Graves (2) was probably born in 1776 in Rawcliffe in Goole, Yorkshire, England, was baptized 24 June 1776 in Rawcliffe, parish of Snaith, Yorkshire, England, died 11 June 1852 (or 28 Oct. 1852[1]), age 75, at Pastures Farm, Yorkshire, and was buried 14 June 1852 in Rawcliffe[2].
He married Mary Ellis on 11 Nov. 1794 at St. Lawrence, Snaith, Yorkshire. She was baptized 16 Nov. 1777 at Rawcliffe, and died at age 65 (probably shortly before the 1841 census). According to R‑10, she was a daughter of William Ellis (b. 1752) and Hannah Furth (b. 1747, Thorne, Yorkshire). (According to R‑2, there was a William Ellis, born 21 July 1765, died 1805 at Rawcliffe, married Hannah ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of Howden, Yorkshire, about 1778. He may have been a brother or other close relation of Mary Ellis.) All their children were born at Rawcliffe, Yorkshire.
It is likely that this Graves family is related to that of Robert Quarton Wilkinson Graves, who was born in York, Yorkshire, and married Mary Maria Bramley (genealogy 331), and to that of William Greaves and Sarah Burland of Yorkshire (genealogy 114) . The map on the next page shows the areas around York and Snaith where this family lived. Carlton is about 1 mile north of Snaith, Rawcliffe is about 3 miles east, and Howden is about 8 miles northeast of Snaith. Aughton (probably the one where some later descendants lived) is about halfway between Snaith and York.
Thomas Graves was in the 1841 and 1851 censuses for Rawcliffe, Snaith, Yorkshire. In 1841, Hannah Ellis, 45, was living in his household. (R‑2, R‑10)

Bedale. He married Maria Anna Bramley on 6 Feb. 1849 at Snaith, Yorkshire, England. He was from Carlton, Yorkshire., and was a farmer. Maria was a sister of Thomas Bramley, Jr., who married Hannah Ramskill Greaves on 19 Sept. 1849 at Knottingley, Yorkshire, England. Hannah's parents were Benjamin Greaves and Mary Johnson, both of whom died in 1835. Benjamin's parents were William Greaves and Sarah Burland, married 3 March 1782, of Pontefract, Yorkshire, England.
