DESCENDANTS OF NANCY ANN GRAVES AND JOSIAH THOMAS SETTLE OF NC, TN, MS & OH

GENERATION 1

Nancy Ann Graves (1) was born 30 July 1815 in Caswell Co., NC, and died 12 April 1893 in Eldorado, Preble Co., OH. She married Josiah Thomas Settle, son of David Settle and Rhoda Mullins, on 31 May 1858 in Hamilton, Butler Co., OH, ceremony performed by the Rev. H. M. Richardson. Josiah was born 24 Aug. 1799 in Rockingham Co., NC, and died 13 May 1869 in Hamilton, Butler Co., OH. He had first married Frances Lea Graves, daughter of Azariah Graves and Elizabeth Williams, on 8 June 1826 in Rockingham Co., NC. Frances died 7 Oct. 1829 in Rockingham Co., NC.

The 1880 census for Hanover Twp., Butler Co., OH, shows Nancy Settle, age 62, divorced, with Rosa Walden, 14, adopted daughter. It is possible that Nancy married a Mr. Walden after Josiah died, and Rosa is a daughter by a previous marriage of his. This has not been confirmed.

Nancy married James Adkins on 23 Dec. 1883 in Richmond, Wayne Co., IN. They moved to Eldorado after their marriage, where Nancy purchased a home on lot 43 in the Village of Eldorado, Preble Co., OH.

The first 8 children of Nancy and Josiah were born in Rockingham Co., NC, the next in TN, and the last in Tishomingo Co., MS. The 1850 census for Rockingham Co., NC, shows Josiah and his daughter Frances (by his first wife). The 1860 census for Hanover Twp., Butler Co., OH, lists Nancy living with 4 of the younger children, Josiah living with son William, and a couple of the sons living separately next to them. Nancy was listed as black and all her children were mulatto. Nancy was in the 1870 census for Hamilton, Butler Co., OH, living with daughters Cornelia and Josephine, all listed as mulatto. She was born 28 Feb. 1838 in NC, and died 1 April 1892 in Hamilton, OH. They were in the 1880 census for Hanover Twp., Butler Co., OH, when he was a farmer, and they were listed as mulatto. (R‑1)

She was born 15 Nov. 1850 in MS, and died in 1938 in Randolph Co., IN. She was born 28 April 1850 in Hartford Twp., Adams Co., IN, and died 25 Jan. 1937 in Wells Co., IN. She was in the 1850 census for Hartford Twp., Adams Co., IN. They were in the 1880 census for Nottingham Twp., Wells Co., IN. They were listed as white. He was a farmer. All their children were born in Wells Co., IN. (R‑1)

They were in the 1930 census for Bluffton City, Harrison Twp., Wells Co., IN, when he was a salesman, and her widowed mother was living with them. They apparently had no children.

Cornelia A. Settle (9) was born in Sept. 1846 in Rockingham Co., IN, and died 5 April 1923 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. She married James M. Townsend in 1889 in Wayne, Randolph Co., IN. He was born in Aug. 1845 in OH, and died 17 June 1913 in Wayne, Randolph Co., IN. They were in the 1900 census for Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, with his widowed sister, Eva C. Sawyer, living with them. All family members were listed as black. They had been married 26 years. They were in the 1910 census for Richmond, Wayne Co., IN, with her widowed sister Josephine in their household. They had been married 39 years, and all family members were listed as mulatto.

Both the 1900 and 1910 censuses stated that Cornelia had 2 children, both still living, but only daughter Grace was with them. The obvious answer is that both of them had probably been married before, and her other child was by her first marriage, in spite of the 1910 census stating that this was a first marriage for both of them. That would explain the statement by R‑1 that they were married in 1889, although census records gave 1871-1874. Also, there was a James M. Townsend, born about 1844, with wife Elizabeth in the 1880 census for Troy, Athens Co., OH, with 3 children, and no other possible match for James could be found in 1880. (R‑1)

Josiah Thomas Settle (10) was born 30 Sept. 1850 in the Cumberland Mountains of TN, and died 16 Aug. 1915 in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN. He first married Theresa T. Vogelsang in 1875 in Washington, DC. She was born 7 Jan. 1854 in Albany, NY, and died 22 March 1888 in Memphis, TN. He married second Frances McCullough in 1890 in Washington, DC. She was born about 1861 in SC, and died after 1930 in Washington, DC. Their first child was born in Sardis, Panola Co., MS, the second in TN, and the last in Memphis, TN. (R‑1)

The 1920 census for Pittsburgh, PA, listed Frank E. Fowler, widower, with son Harry T. Fowlia, and widowed mother-in-law Cornelia Townsend, all listed as black. The 1930 census for Pittsburgh, PA, listed Frank R. Fowler, born about 1885 in PA, with wife Alma B., born about 1894 in OH, son Harry F. Fowler, born about 1918 in PA, daughter Susan E. Fowler, born about 1925, and brother-in-law Rufus Thompson, all listed as negro. (R‑1)
