LATHAM GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ‑‑‑‑‑‑ OF TN & BLOUNT CO., AL

GENERATION 1

Latham Graves (1) was born about 1788 in NC, and died in 1857 in Blount Co., AL.  He served in the War of 1812 as a private, 3rd Regt. (Johnson's) of the East Tenn. Militia.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1794 in NC, and died after 1880 (since she was in the census for that year).  It appears that Latham was in Bledsoe Co., TN by about 1814, and that he may have gone to Alabama by 1823.  Although he was not listed in the 1830 Blount Co., AL census, he could have been in another county, or have been missed in the census count.  He was listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Blount Co., AL.  The 1840 census showed him with four boys and five girls.  According to the census records, James and Nancy were born in TN and the remaining children in AL.  By the 1860 census, Latham Graves was dead, and his widow was listed as head of the household.  Letters of administration were issued to son-in-law Pleasant Anderton, husband of daughter Mary. The administration of his estate is found in record book A, Blount Co. Probate Office, dated 3 Jan. 1873.  “…that the names, residences, ages and condition of the heirs, and distributees of the estate of the said decedent so far as your petitioner knows or believes, are as follows, to wit:  the widow Elizabeth, James, Thomas, the heirs of Lewis, decd, Mary intermarried with Pleasant M. Anderton, Nancy, Margaret, Ann & Elizabeth children of deceased over 21 years old”.

It is believed that Latham Graves may be related to John Graves who married Betty Beeson, and possibly a son of James Graves of Randolph Co. and Surry Co., NC.

Their daughters Nancy, Margaret, Ann, and Elizabeth were listed with their widowed mother in the 1860-1880 censuses for Blount Co., AL, and it is probable that they never married.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑6, R‑7, R‑12, R‑101)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF LATHAM GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH ‑‑‑‑‑‑

James Graves, Jr. (3) was born about 1814 in TN, and died after 1880, probably in AL.  Although information indicated that he was James Latham Graves, Jr., it is thought that he was referred to as James Graves, Jr., because James Graves, Sr. (Genealogy 100) also lived in Blount Co., AL.  James Jr. was recorded on the 1880 census living with his daughter Mary and her husband Ephraim Gossett in Blount Co., AL.  He bought his first land in Blount Co., AL on 29 July 1835.  He married Lucinda S. Roden on 13 Oct. 1837 in Blount Co., AL; in a ceremony performed by Solomon Allred, Sr., J.P. in Blount Co., AL.  She was born about 1821 in AL[3], and died before 1880.

She was a daughter of Elizabeth Roden and Andrew Allred (although Elizabeth is not proven).  The Allred family goes back to Randolph Co., NC, and are related to the Allreds who married McMasters in Randolph Co.  Lucinda Allred was listed as Lucinda Roden on her marriage license.  She was raised by her Roden grandparents, possibly adopted by them.

This family was listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Blount Co., AL; their children were born in Blount Co., AL.  (R‑2, R‑3, R‑6, R‑101)

He married Cynthia Ann Bishop, daughter of Isaac Bishop and Elizabeth Hamlin (or Hamblin).  She was born in Jan. 1826 in Madison Co., AL, died 16 July 1914, and was buried in Union Cem., near Haleyville, Winston Co., AL.  Their children were born in Blount Co., AL.

Thomas moved from Blount Co. to Franklin Co. after the end of the Civil War.  In 1867, Colbert Co. was cut off from Franklin Co.

They were recorded on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Blount Co., AL and the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Colbert Co., AL.  In 1900, Cynthia lived in Lawrence Co., AL with her daughter Sallie’s family and in 1910 in Marion Co., AL with her daughter Elizabeth’s family.  In 1900, Cynthia stated that five of her six children were living.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑101)

J.; she indicated her parents were born in GA.  According to information handed down to R‑10 from Louise Graves, #122, Lewis migrated from Huntsville, AL to Oklahoma where he married Ollie Kay Schmaromalia, the daughter of an Indian chief.  (R‑2, R‑6, R‑10, R‑11, R‑12, R‑101)

"He'd come around to visit, but he'd never help to do anything.  Poppa enjoyed his visits, so Momma didn't say anything.  I remember one time Momma came in from working in the fields and she was hot and tired and she had to get supper started, and she asked Uncle Buddy to go draw her a bucket of water.  He just leaned back and said, 'Sudie, my hands won't allow it.'  I guess that's why he had the prettiest fingernails of any man I ever saw."
