DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM O. GRAVES AND SARAH HAZEN OF NY & ERIE CO., PA

GENERATION 1

William O. Graves (1) was born about 1800, probably in Herkimer Co., NY, and died in Edinboro, Erie Co., PA.  He married Sarah Hazen, daughter of Silas Hazen and Damaris Wilder, in Mina, Chautauqua Co., NY.  She was born about 1804 in Herkimer Co., NY, and died in April 1840 in Edinboro, Erie Co., PA.  All their children were born in Mina, NY.

It is likely that this family was descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (genealogy 166), since all or almost all of the Graves families in Herkimer Co., NY in 1800 and 1810 were descended from this John Graves.  The line of descent for the families in Herkimer Co. was John1, Benjamin2, Benjamin3, Jedediah4, Jonah5 and Russell5.  (R‑4)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM O. GRAVES (1) AND SARAH HAZEN

Charles Wilder Graves (3) was born 15 April 1825 in PA, and died in 1810.  He first married Lucretia M. Wright[1], daughter of Levi Wright and Maria Carr, on 3 July 1862, possibly in Eldred Township, Warren Co., PA.  She was born 5 April 1843 in Columbus, Warren Co., PA, and died in Pine Valley, PA.  They lived in Columbus, Warren Co., PA.  About April 1870 they moved to Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY.

Charles died 14 April 1880 (according to R‑1), and was buried in St. Thomas Cem., Corry, Erie Co., PA.  However, there is a record showing Charles living in 1900 in Lewellyn, NE, so his death date of 1880 is probably not correct (but perhaps this is not the same Charles).  According to R‑4, Charles married second Rhoda Lucinda Root, daughter of Charles Theron Root and Mary Splitstone, on 25 Sept. 1897 in Day, Deuel Co., NE.  She was born 20 Jan. 1853 in Trumbull Co., OH.

Charles has not yet been found in the 1850 or 1860 censuses.  However, Lucretia is in the 1850 census for Freehold, Warren Co., PA, page 282, as a child in the household of her parents: Levi Wright, 44, carpenter, NY, Mariah, 44, CT, James, 18, carpenter, PA, Purlina, 17, PA, Harriet, 14, CT, Andrew, 12, CT, Sally, 9, PA, Lucretia, 8 PA, Surillas (male), 4, PA, Survilla (female), 4, PA, and Lillia, 2, PA.  In the 1860 census for Columbus, Warren Co., PA, Pine Valley P.O., page 688, Lucretia, 18, domestic, was living with Edwin Walton and his wife Paulina.  In the 1870 census for Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Panama P.O., page 466, were Charles W. Graves, 41, farmer, Lucretia, 26, Charles L. (or S.), 6, and C. V., 4.  (R‑1, R‑4)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF CHARLES W. GRAVES (3) AND LUCRETIA M. WRIGHT

Charles S. (or L.) Graves (6) was born 27 Nov. 1863 in Wattsburg, Erie Co., PA.  He married Carrie Ellen Gates on 31 Dec. 1883.  She was born 26 Oct. 1863, daughter of Charles Leander Gates (b. 2 May 1835) and Panama Elizabeth Briggs (b. 5 June 1840).  It is possible they were married and all children born in Nebraska.  Their son Harry remembered the trip from Nebraska as a boy.  They were both buried in Beaverdam Cem., Wayne Co., PA.

Their being buried in Wayne Co., PA, at the opposite end of the state from where he was born and lived, is a possible indication that the previous generation may have lived there and had a plot in that cemetery.

It is said that he once owned property with someone else in North Platte, Nebraska.  He moved his wife and children by covered wagon from NE to the Jamestown, NY area (close to Erie Co., PA), probably about 1900.  His partner was supposed to send him money for his share of the property but never did.  They were living in 1900 in Hydetown, Crawford Co., PA, and he owned a barber shop there.

They were in the 1900 census for Steuben Twp., Crawford Co., PA, ED 42, page 8A, with all 4 children.  He was a farm laborer.  (R‑2, R‑3)

They were in the 1900 census for Pittsfield Twp., Precinct 2, village of Garland, Warren Co., PA, with Serilous, barber, Frances M., and their first 3 children, all born in PA.  (R‑1)
