Revised 25 Jan. 2011, Gen. 135
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM
GRAVES AND BETSEY THAIR OF CHESTER,WINDSOR CO., AND MOUNT HOLLY, RUTLAND CO.,
VT
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1) was born 16
Sept. 1771 (agrees with age at death of 84 in VT VR), and died 16 Sept. 1855 in
Mount Holly, Rutland Co., VT (VR).
He married Betsey Thair (or Betsey Morey[1])
on 22 March 1792[2] in Chester,
Windsor Co., VT. The residence of
the groom was given as Montague, MA.
They lived for a time at Chester, Windsor Co., VT, and then moved to
Mount Holly, Rutland Co., VT. (They are also said to have lived in Montague,
Franklin Co., MA.) Betsey was born
about 1769[3]
and died 5 Oct. 1851 in Mt. Holly, VT, at age 82 (VR).
There is a family story or legend
that WilliamÕs son, Lyman, is descended from an ancestor (possibly a Thomas
Graves connected with the family of admirals in England) who sailed up the
Hudson River, traveled to VT, and received a large land grant. This route is possible, since Hudson
Falls, the closest point on the Hudson River, is no more than 30 miles from
Mount Holly. Also, since the only
Graves immigrant known to be from that Graves family arrived by way of Quebec
and settled in St. Albans and Winooski, VT, it is possible that family members
could have gone down Lake Champlain; the overland route from there is only
about 20 miles. However, it seems
more likely that the ancestor may have traveled up the Connecticut River
(especially since William is said to have lived in Montague, MA, which is right
on the Connecticut River), and that there may have been confusion with the
family of the Thomas Graves who migrated via Quebec and settled in northern
Vermont.
For more discussion on the family,
see the discussion for WilliamÕs son, Lyman Graves.
It is believed that William may be
descended from immigrant Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT, and might be closely
related to Silas5, Jonathan4, Samuel3, John2,
Thomas1. Silas was born
10 Nov. 1736 in Sunderland, MA, moved to Deerfield, MA about 1760, then to
Montague, MA, and later to Òsome point unknown.Ó The last known child of Silas is Jerusha, born in 1766. It is reasonable to think that William
could have been born after that, and the birth might not have been recorded
because of the move to Mount Holly, VT.
Also, this Silas is almost certainly the one who bought land in Mount
Holly in 1817 (see discussion for WilliamÕs son, Lyman Graves).
The map of southern Vermont after
the list of children shows the places in VT this family is known to have
lived. (R‑2, R‑200)

was born 24 April 1791[4],
died 6 June 1842 in Mt. Holly, VT, at age 51, and was buried in Tarbellville
Cem. They are said to have had 4
children. (R‑2, R‑3, R‑200)

both buried at Tarbellville Cem.
(R‑2, R‑200)
Children - Graves
16. Dudley Graves, m. Feeley Spring. No children.

in Mt. Holly.
According to R‑2, their
children (all but Levi in VT VR) were: (1) Willard, b.c. 1821, Mt. Holly, d. 19
April 1880, age 59; (2) Diana, b. May 1825, Mt. Holly, d. 16 June 1825, Mt.

yr. Since all these children other
than Willard died young, they are probably in addition to those listed
below. These children may have
been listed in the VR because of dying in VT, whereas the others who lived to
adulthood may have moved away. (R‑2,
R‑200)

Lyman Graves (8) was born 5 May
1805 and died 7 Oct. 1882, both in Mount Holly, Rutland Co., VT. His parents were given in the Vermont
vital records as William Graves and Betsey Morey[6]. He first married Rosetta Richardson,
daughter of Calvin Richardson and Mindwell Barrett, about 1830[7]. She was born 11 Nov. 1810, died 6 (or
5) Jan. 1848 at age 38 in Mt. Holly, Rutland Co., VT, and was buried in
Tarbleville Cem.[8] He secondly married Emeline Stevens by
1853[9].
He secondly married Emeline Stevens
on 16 Oct. 1853. She died 30 Oct.
1896 at 84 years of age.
He is also said to have married Lucy
Cornelia McCauley on 5 April 1855.
(However, this marriage was not found by K. V. Graves.)
A deed from Samuel Graves, 1833,
Book 7, p. 437, Mt. Holly, VT, seems to indicate a relationship between Samuel
Graves, Stephen Graves, and Lyman Graves.
It is possible that they were brothers and Samuel was settling their
father's estate. Daniel A. Graves,
son of Samuel and Hannah Graves, died at age 1 on 10 April 1833 in Mt. Holly,
VT.
The first recorded land transaction
for a Graves in Mt. Holly is in 1817 for Silas Graves. Between then and 1833, there were other
transactions for Silas Graves, and also for William and Stephen Graves. There was also an Addison Graves who lived
in Mt. Holly.
The 1800 census for Rutland Co., VT
shows Asa Graves, 26-45, in Brandon with 3 males under 10, 1 female under 10, 2
females 10-16, 2 females 16-26, and 1 female 26-45; in Ira, Daniel Graves,
26-45, with 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26,
and William Graves, 26-45, with 2 males under 10, 3 males 10-16, 2 females
under 10, and 1 female 26-45. In
Middletown there was Gideon Graves, 16-26, with 1 female 16-26; no Graves names
in Mt. Holly; in Rutland there was Asa Graves, 26-45, with 1 male under 10, 2
females 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45; in Sudbury there was Elijah
Graves, 26-45, with 1 male under 10, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45; in
Wells there was Ebenezer Graves, 45 or older, with 1 male under 10, 1 male
10-16, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 45 or older. The most likely connection seems to be with Daniel and
William Graves in Ira, VT, since they are probably the ones later found in Mt.
Holly. Ira is only about 5 miles
southwest of Rutland, and about 15 miles northwest of Mt. Holly.
The information on the children is
all from the vital records for Mt. Holly, VT. The birth records are in Book 2, p. 186. All the children were born in Mt.
Holly. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3,
R‑4, R‑6, R‑200)
