Rev. 8 April 2008, Gen. 141
DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND MARTHA LOUISA GRAVES
OF GLOUCESTER CO. & YORK CO., VA
GENERATION 1
John Graves (1) was born about 1800 in Gloucester Co., VA, and supposedly died about 1880 (according to R‑1). However, it seems more likely that John died before 1850, since he was not in the 1850 census with his wife Martha and his children. He married Martha Louisa Graves (her maiden name?). She was born in 1808 in Gloucester Co., VA, and died after 1870 in York Co., VA.
Martha was in the 1850 census for York Co., VA, listed as Martha A., 42, with her 3 children, and everyone was listed as born in Gloucester Co., VA. She was in the 1870 census for Grafton Twp., York Co., VA, living in the household of her son-in-law and daughter, Henry and Martha E. Thompson. John Graves could not be found in the 1840 census. It is possible that he was the one in Stafford Co. (next to King & Queen Co.), but there is no evidence to support that. Gloucester Co. in 1840 had households headed by Frances, Ralph and William Graves, but it does not appear that John Graves could have been in any of those.
It has been suggested that John Graves could be descended
from genealogy 889 (William Graves and Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑
of Gloucester Co., VA) and genealogy 892 (John C. Graves and Frances Bew of
King & Queen and Gloucester Co., VA).
That is a possibility, but it also seems possible that John Graves was
descended from genealogy 169 (Capt. Thomas Graves of VA), partly because of the
name Ralph Graves, which is uncommon except in that family. (R‑1)
