DESCENDANTS OF JOHN S. GRAVES

OF NC, LIVINGSTON CO., KY, & JOHNSON CO., IL

GENERATION 1

John S. Graves (1) was born about 1776.  He was supposedly from either Germany or England, and then moved from North Carolina to eastern Kentucky, according to a book, A Century in Egypt, written by J. A. Elkins about 1925.  (Is this the same book as Little Egypt, A History of Cairo, Illinois?)  John bought some land in KY, but was forced off it by someone with a better title.  He then went to Livingston Co., KY, and finally to southern Illinois.  He married about 1795-96.  His wife may have been ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Alcorn.  He had at least 4 daughters and 2 sons with him when he moved to IL.  The family was listed in the 1820 census for Vienna Twp., Johnson Co., IL, with 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female 26 to 45, 2 males under 10, and 2 females under 10.

According to p. 86 of Little Egypt, "The Graves family moved to what is now Livingston Co., KY.  (Livingston Co. was formed in 1798 from Christian Co.)  John Graves had two sons, Fred and John Graves, Jr., and four daughters.  A daughter married Henry Mathis.  Henry Mathis and wife and Fred Graves and two other sisters, Sarah and Mary (called Polly) and William Graves and his sister, Vanillia, who were children of John Graves, Jr., came to Johnson Co., IL in about 1800 and settled near Buncombe."  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑5, R‑100)

From Little Egypt, A History of Cairo, Illinois:

Page 78. Mrs. Minnie Cranfill of Geary Oklahoma, is a daughter of John Graves. She has two sons, Lenwood O., O.V., and one daughter, Lillie May.

Page 97. HEAVYWEIGHT RELATIVE OF GEORG E ELKINS, WILLIAM CRANFILL OF GEARY, OKLAHOMA, WHO TIPS THE SCALES AT 687 POUNDS. While attending the race meet at Canton on the Fourth of July we had the opportunity of meeting W.A. Cranfill, Blaine County's (Oklahoma) largest citizen. Mr. Cranfill is 43 years old, 5 feet 11 inches in height and weights 687 pounds. He is 84 inches around the waist, 47 inches around the thighs and 27 inches around the muscles of his arms. Mr. Cranfill's wife weights 110 pounds, while his two sons and a daughter are of normal size. 18 years ago, he was a slender fellow weighing 140 pounds. Up to ten years ago he never weighed more than 200 pounds, when he began to fatten at the rate of 75 pounds a year. Three or four years ago he had the "flue " and his weight has since remained about the same. Mr. Cranfill is an intelligent man and is well posted on current events. He is almost helpless and gets about with the aid of two canes. (jjh note: O.V. Cranfill had one cane in his possession prior to his death). He says he has taken all kinds of anti-fat he has heard of, but seems to thrive and fatten on it. His home is five miles north of Geary, Oklahoma. Mrs. Cranfill is a daughter of John Graves of Amarillo, Texas, and John Graves' father, Fred Graves, was a first cousin to George Elkins. John Graves mother was Nancy Eklins, a first cousin to Mr. Elkins.

From O.V. Cranfill: Al died in 1932. At that time Minnie took over the running of the farm, where she lived for 14 years before moving to Greenfield. At 5'-4" and barely 100 pounds, Minnie was a very active lady who took a great interest in her family. She spent numerous hours with her grandchildren. She entertained as many as 25 people in her two room house each Christmas. She enjoyed working with her flowers and fruit trees, and she was an avid gardner. Two things that she enjoyed very much were her regular dip of Honest snuff and a good cup of hot tea. Minnie stayed quite busy and happy in her home in Greenfield until she died of cancer in 1962 at the age of 72.

Note: From O.V. Cranfill, location of William Alma Cranfill's home: From Greenfield, go south on highway 270 to first mile line going east (approx. 3/4 mile), go east 2 1/2 miles, there is a long drive back into north, about 1/4 mile long, thatÕs the homeplace. Little three room clapboard house, moved here from Cleburne, Texas between July 1905 and December 1907, house on west side of fence at half mile line.  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑6, R‑100)
