Rev. 20 July 2019, Gen. 150
DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES AND MARY COPELAND
OF VA AND GA
GENERATION 1
James Graves (1) was born in 1730 in Culpeper Co., Va., and died in 1796 (between 23 May and 10 Nov.) in Lincoln Co. (previously Wilkes Co.), Ga. He married Mary Copeland in 1750 in Va. She was born about 1732 in Va., and died in 1801 in Lincoln Co., Ga. He served as a private from Ga. in the Revolutionary War, and fought under Gen. Elijah Clarke at the battle of Kettle Creek in Ga. In April 1784, James Graves received 287-1/2 acres of land in Franklin Co., Ga., adjacent to a grant to Count de Estaing, a Revolutionary soldier from France. (James supposedly received land in Wilkes Co., Ga. for his Revolutionary War service, and that is probably the same as this Franklin Co. land.)
The will and estate return of James Graves mentioned his sons Richard, William, John, Francis, Thomas, Robert; daughters Mary Whitaker, Sally, and Susannah; and wife Mary.
It had been believed that James Graves was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA, possibly through Thomas2 Graves. However, DNA testing has shown this is not the case, and James was almost certainly descended from Francis Graves (genealogy 220). The most likely lineage is Francis1, Thomas2, Richard3, James4.
James Graves may have had a son James as his first son, according to Dr. William L. Graves and Dr. Sherburne Anderson. This James was born about 1754 in Va., died about 3 Dec. 1818 in Wilkes Co., Ga., and was said to have married Catherine West, who died about 31 Jan. 1843 in Wilkes Co., Ga. There was a Col. John Graves, born 4 Sept. 1745 in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., Va., died 24 June 1834, who married a Catherine West in 1795. She was born in 1763 and died in 1841. John Graves lived in Wilkes Co., Ga. after the Rev. War, but he is in genealogy 270, which does not share a common Graves ancestry with genealogies 150 or 220, so this Catherine West marriage for James Graves seems unlikely.
If James Graves and Mary Copeland did have a son named James, it is possible that he was the James Graves of genealogy 402. (R‑2, R‑7)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVES (1) AND MARY COPELAND
Richard Graves (2) was born about 1755 (or 1753) in Va., and died in 1829 in Copiah Co., Miss. He first married Mary (ÒPollyÓ) Lawrence. According to family legend, her father was the "first Baptist minister in Virginia." Richard was in Natchez, Miss. as early as 1799, and settled permanently in the Mississippi Territory (the part that is now Wilkinson Co., Miss.) in 1802. He moved with his brothers John and William to Marion Co., Miss. in 1812.
He secondly married Mrs. Olivia (or Olive) (Ellis) Savage, daughter of John Ellis, on 1 Jan. 1816 in Marion Co., Miss. Steven Ellis (who was the bondsman for the marriage of Richard's son James Graves to Sarah Holliday in Marion Co., Miss. in 1814) was the brother of Olivia Ellis Savage. Olivia had first married Arthur Savage on 23 Oct. 1813.
It is suspected that Richard Graves was the Revolutionary soldier who was granted 287 acres in Franklin Co., Ga. for his services.
It is also suspected that another child of Richard was Nancy Graves, born 22 April 1784 in GA, who married Moses Starnes (genealogy 601). (R‑7, R‑10)

11. Lawrence Graves
12. James Graves, m. Sarah Holliday, 27 Oct. 1814 (Marion Co., Miss.). It has been claimed by some that this James Graves is the one at the head of genealogy 78, who had son Robert Charles and others. However, that connection is definitely wrong, since descendants of gen. 78 and those of gen. 150 have both had Y-DNA tests proving they are not descended from a common Graves ancestor.
+13. Mary Eliza Amanda Graves, b. 1788, m. Gabriel Caston, 20 Aug. 1806, d. 25 April 1870.
+14. Martha Graves, b.c. 1792, m. William A. Chance, 21 Sept. 1806, d.c. 1850.
+15. Daniel Graves, b. 6 Dec. 1800, m(1) Sarah Dillon, 18 Nov. 1819, m(2) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Starnes (?), d. 1843 or after.

16. John Graves
Robert Graves (3) was born about 1760, probably in VA, and died about 1819 in Amite Co., MS. He inherited his father's plantation in Wilkes Co., GA, but moved to Mississippi Territory in 1805. He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.
This Robert Graves seems an unlikely father of Robert Hiram Graves. While possibly correct, this is not backed up by any evidence. The 1819 Robert W. Graves estate file in Amite Co., MS, names no heirs, and the court appointed Robert W.Õs brother, Francis, as administrator of the estate. Since precedence was given first to the widow and next to a child when appointing an administrator of an estate, this suggests there was no widow (or child who had reached his majority). The appointment of Robert W.Õs brother alone raises serious doubt that Robert W. Graves was the father of Robert Hiram Graves (who had certainly reached his majority). (R‑31, R‑60)
Children - Graves
+17. Robert Hiram Graves, b.c. 1783, m. Celia Ann Dickens.
Francis Graves (5) was born 1763 or before, and died before 27 May 1839 in Amite Co., Miss. In the 1830 census for Wilkinson Co., Miss., Francis was listed as between 40 and 60 years old (which would indicate a birth date of 1770-1790). The Personal Tax Rolls for Amite Co., Miss., 1813, show that Francis Graves paid no poll tax, apparently exempt because of having reached age 50, therefore born by 1763.
On 27 May 1839, James J. Graves, son of Francis Graves, requested administration of his father's estate, then deceased. James stated that Rebecca Graves, widow of Francis Graves, and Martha Graves, daughter, and he himself should share in the division of the estate of Francis; that other children, Richard W. Graves, Alfred B. Graves and Zachariah Graves, had already received equitable advancement from their father. James asked that a guardian for the children of Zachariah Graves, decd., be appointed (Amite Co., Miss., Granted Bk. 3, p. 4.). The eldest son of Francis Graves, Benjamin Graves, had already provided for himself.
Francis married Rebecca Spinks, daughter of John Spinks. She had an uncle Enoch Spinks (2368-1842), son of Enoch Spinks and Amey Pearce, and brother of John Spinks. The fact that Enoch was a Methodist preacher in Randolph Co., N.C., may have given emphasis to the Methodism of Francis Graves.
On 27 Dec. 1820, Francis Graves, Justice of the Peace of Amite Co., Miss., performed the marriage ceremony for his brother-in-law, Baker Spinks, and Joanna Johns. The marriage bond was signed by William Spinks and Baker Spinks.
Francis owned large holdings of land which he acquired by land grant and purchase. He was active in civic affairs and in supporting legislation advantageous to pioneer settlers. He was active in the affairs of the Methodist church, a friend of Rev. William Winans. Francis advanced the welfare of family members. He served in the Mississippi legislature from 1820 to 1830, almost continuously.
Rebecca was born in 1771, and wrote her will 28 April 1847. It was recorded in May 1847 in Amite Co., Miss., witnessed by Jarrot Caston and Benjamin Graves. Rebecca was not listed in the 1850 census; therefore, she died between these dates. She left bequests to her son Alfred B. Graves and grandson John Graves, son of J. J. Graves.
File no. 70, Amite Co., contains the petition of John F. Graves, minor heir of James J. Graves, deceased, naming his uncle Benjamin Graves as guardian. There is also the petition of Benjamin Graves that he be appointed the guardian of John F. Graves; also his final statement of account. Benjamin was appointed 12 Dec. 1854 and made final settlement 13 Jan. 1857, Amite Co., Miss. This John F. Graves, son of J. J. Graves, is the grandson named in Rebecca's will. The item proves that Benjamin Graves was the son of Francis and Rebecca Graves, corroborated by the associations found in the many other legal documents concerning the activities of these people and by the fact that the legacy to John F. Graves by his grandmother Rebecca Graves is the same as that enumerated in his petition that his uncle Benjamin Graves be his guardian, effected 12 Dec. 1854.
Francis Graves was the executor of his brother Robert's will in 1819. He stayed in Amite Co. and became a wealthy planter. (R‑2, R‑8)

Mary Graves (6) was born about 1764 (or 1760) in VA (possibly Prince George Co.), and died in 1815 in Wilkinson Co., MS. She first married Samuel Whittaker about 1778 in Wilkes Co., GA. He was born about 1753 in Chester Co., PA, and died in Jan. 1802 in Franklin Co., GA (or after 1778 in Rowan Co., NC). All their children were born in Wilkes Co., GA. (More proof is needed for the Whittaker children listed.) She married second John Thompson in 1809 in Amite Co., MS. (R‑72)

William W. Graves (9) was born about 1769 in GA, and died in Covington Co., GA. He married Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1775 in VA, and died before 1880. He was listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Covington Co., MS, and his children's names are taken from the 1850 census. The first 5 children were born in GA, and the last in LA. (R‑2, R‑31)

+31. Catherine Graves, b.c. 1792, m. David Dickens.
+32. Humphrey Graves, b.c. 1795, m. Sarah Cook, 15 Aug. 1815.
33. Lott Graves, b.c. 1797.

+35. Middleton Graves, b.c. 1802, m. Matilda Herrington, 1828.
+36. William W. Graves, Jr., b.c. 1810, m. Lydia Cook, d. 18 June 1890.
John W. (?) Graves (10) was born 15 Oct. (or 13 Sept.[1]) 1770, and died 21 Jan. 18581 in Simpson Co., Miss. He married Sarah Warren[2] on 2 Sept. 17911. She was born 4 Oct. 1773, and died 29 Aug. 1858 (or 29 Sept. 1857) in Simpson Co., Miss. (All these dates are from the John Graves Bible, except the ones in parentheses, which are from the Robert Magee Bible.)
He moved to Amite Co., Miss. in 1802 from Wilkes Co. (now Lincoln Co.), Ga. (There is another story that they didn't move to MS until 1849, but that seems to be wrong.) John Graves' purchase of land in Amite Co. is recorded in land records reprinted in Amite Co., Mississippi, 1699-1865, by Albert E. Casey, Birmingham, Ala., 1948. In subsequent records reprinted in the same book, John swears he is the brother of both Francis and Richard Graves who arrived in Amite Co. in 1803. Various records indicate that John later settled in Marion Co., Miss., where he helped lay out the county seat of Columbia. John moved to Covington Co., Miss. in 1819 or early 1820, and he and his wife Sarah died in Simpson Co., Miss. in 1858. They are thought to be buried at the Robert Magee cemetery, old Jaynesville, or at the old cemetery 3 or 4 miles north of Jaynesville on the east bank of Silver Creek on the Brooks Berry place, probably the latter. They are thought to be the ancestors of all the Graves later living in the Lone Star community east of Prentiss, then in Covington Co., now in Jefferson Davis Co.
According to the Robert Magee Bible (per R‑11), the children of John and Sarah Graves were Margaret (b. 1795, d. 1880), John Jr. (b. 1800), Humphrey, Jane, Angie, Middleton, and maybe another daughter.
There is apparently some confusion between John (b. 1770, d. 1858) and John (b. 1757, d. 1821). The John Graves, born 1757, is said to have been Justice of the Peace in both Wilkinson Co. and Marion Co., Miss.
A brief family history written by Amarintha Clinton Graves states: "There is a bit of history that has been handed down from generation to generation of three brothers by the name of Graves who came from England in the very early days of the settlement of America. One of these found a home in Kentucky and settled there; another one settled in Georgia and this is the one my father (Samuel Graves who married Eliza Lawson Brown) descended from. Their third brother was dissatisfied, wandered away, and they never heard of him anymore. They thought the Indians had killed him or he had gone back to England. Away down the line in 1901, I met a Mrs. Mundy who told me that her name was Graves, and that she descended from the missing brother who settled in New Jersey where she was born." (R‑2, R‑7, R‑11, R‑20)
Children - Graves
37. Benjamin Graves, b. 7 March 1792.
38. John Graves, Jr., b. 21 Aug. 1793. This is almost certainly John Douglas Graves, b.c. 1800 in GA (gen. 354), based on Y-DNA test results. That matches the information in the Robert Magee Bible. There is a slight possibility that it could be the John Graves of GA, MS and TX, who m. Eliza ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (gen. 209).

GENERATION 3
CHILDREN OF RICHARD GRAVES (2)
Mary ("Polly") Eliza Amanda Graves (13) was born in 1788 or 1786 in Wilkes Co. (now Lincoln Co.), Ga., and died in 1875 or 25 April 1870 in Amite Co., Miss. She married Gabriel Caston on 20 Aug. (or 25 Sept.) 1806 in Wilkinson Co. (or Amite Co.), Miss. He was born in 1783 (or about 1771, according to Mrs. Lucius) in Lancaster Co., S.C., and died 15 (or 2) June 1840 in Amite Co., Miss. (R‑7, R‑10, R‑13)
Children - Caston
+46. Laban Glass Caston, b.c. 1809, m. Azalea Bourg, 26 March 1829, d. 1850-60.
47. Eliza M. Caston, m. Ezekiel Boatner (son of Elias Boatner).
+48. Seth Perry Caston, b. 1819, m. Martha Blunt Wilkins, d. 1875.
49. Sarah E. Caston, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Gayle.
50. Amanda E. (or M.) Caston
Martha (ÒPatsyÓ) Graves (14) was born about 1790 or 1792 in GA, and died about 1850 in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA. She married Capt. William A. Chance, son of Vincent Vinson Chance and Sarah Taylor, on 21 Sept. 1806 in Wilkinson Co., MS. Permission for marriage was given by her father, Richard Graves, 21 Sept. 1806, Wilkinson Co., Miss., Mar. Bk. A, p. 178. He was born 6 Dec. 1779 in Montgomery Co., GA, and died 13 Nov. 1832 in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA.
He is probably the one listed in the 1820 census in Pretty Creek, Feliciana Parish, LA. He was in the 1830 census for East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, with 2 males and 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-9, 2 females 10-14, 1 male and 1 female 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 30-39, 1 male 50-59, and 10 slaves. Martha was in the 1840 census for East Baton Rouge Parish with 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male and 1 female 15-19, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 40-49, and 4 slaves. All their children were born in MS except for the last one born in LA.
Something seems to be wrong with the estimated dates of birth for the first several children, all estimated as born about 1806. It appears (from the 1820 census) that 3 or 4 of those were probably born before 1806 and might have been children by a first wife or were not his children at all. Also, the spacing between the dates of birth of Richard in 1811 and Andrew in 1825 raises a question. Either there were two wives for William Chance or a number of children are not listed. The second option seems most likely, with the likely children listed below. (R‑78)

CHILDREN OF ROBERT GRAVES (3)
Robert Hiram Graves (17) was born about 1783 in Georgia, and died in Jones Co., MS. He was listed in the 1816 territorial census in Marion Co., MS, with 1 son and 5 daughters. By 1819 he was paying taxes in Covington Co., MS. A John Graves paid taxes on 480 acres of land, and a William Graves paid taxes on 320 acres of land in 1819, both in Covington Co., MS.
Robert Hiram Graves was listed in the 1820 census of Covington Co. with 5 daughters and 3 sons. He was listed in the 1830-1850 censuses of Covington Co., MS, and in Jones Co., MS in 1860 and 1870. He was shown in the 1860 census as age 77.
He was said to have been a son of a John Graves; however, it is more likely that he was a son of Robert Graves, as shown here. He married Celia ("Seley") Ann Dickens, daughter of Jack Walker Dickens. She was born about 1784 in NC (or GA) (listed as 76 in 1860 census), and died in Jones Co., MS. They were both buried in Graves Field, Hebron, Jones Co., MS, no marker.
There seems to have been another daughter born before 1816. Possibly it was Catherine, born about 1800 in GA, who married a Dickens and is believed to have been a Graves. There also seems to have been another son born 1816-1820. There is a James Graves born 1815-1818 who was in Covington Co. in 1840. Also early estate papers of Robert and Celia Graves list a Jas or Jos and Elijah as administrators. In later estate papers Joseph and Elijah are listed. Could the earlier abbreviation have referred to James?
The John Price who married Jennifer Jane Graves is believed to be the same John Price as the one who married Susan Graves as her second husband. (R‑24, R‑31, R‑39, R‑40, R‑46)

+80. Joseph C. Graves, b. 1822, m. Sarah Anne Allen, 7 Sept. 1843, d. 1880 or later.
CHILDREN OF FRANCIS GRAVES (5) AND REBECCA SPINKS
Benjamin Graves (18) was born in 1790 in Ga. (according to the 1850 census, Wilkinson Co., Miss.), and died 6 July 1870 in Amite Co., Miss. He apparently accompanied his father when he came to the Louisiana-Mississippi area. He acquired his own land grants, purchased acreages, and entered into the affairs of the region, petitioning the government for a post road, and asking for adjustments in requirements in regard to land payments.
He married Elizabeth O. (or A.) Nesmith, daughter of John William Nesmith and Elizabeth Brockington, on 5 (or 3) April 1810. Each was given permission to marry, Benjamin by F. Graves and Elizabeth by John Nesmith, which permit was recorded with the marriage record, 5 April 1810, Bk. A, p. 227, Wilkinson Co., Miss. Elizabeth's father, John Nesmith, was a major, a judge, and an elder and charter member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. John was also a sergeant in the Rev. War[3]. Elizabeth Graves and the Nesmith family retained membership in this church until 1844, perhaps going to Comite, Miss., as Benjamin had an interest there then. Elizabeth was born in 1784 in S.C., and died 1850-60 in Amite Co.
Benjamin is not recorded as active either at Bethany or in the Methodist church of his father, but, when the Comite Presbyterian Church was organized, Lawrence Boatner, in his unpublished diary of 1839, mentions that Mr. Benjamin Graves came collecting for "the church." That it was the Comite Presbyterian Church seems likely, since Benjamin Graves is listed as one of the three who were named as a committee to receive the land and erect the church, in the legal document recording the grant of land for that church site by H. C. Lipscomb and his wife.
Benjamin reared the orphaned children of his sons H. S. Graves and Samuel J. Graves and of his daughter Eliza Wadkins (see 1850 census, Amite Co., Miss.). (R‑2, R‑8, R‑29)

James J. Graves (19) first married Charlotte Ayers on 29 Dec. 1833 in Amite Co., MS (Book E355). His son John was probably by Charlotte, since John named his second child Charlotte Ayers Graves. Perhaps Charlotte died in childbirth.
James married second Mary Araminta Anderson on 3 Oct. 1838 in Amite Co., Miss. He died between 1846, when he gave up guardianship of Martha and F. R. Z. Graves (children of his brother Zachariah), and 1847, when his brother Benjamin was appointed guardian of his son John F. Graves.
In 1845, James J. Graves of Pointe Coupe Parish, La., gave a note to Benjamin Graves for the amount he owed the estate of F. R. Z. Graves (recorded conveyance Bk. 7, p. 190, Amite Co., Miss., Aug. 8, 1847). James was in Pointe Coupe June 8, 1846 (Amite Co., Miss. Conveyance Bk. 7, p. 215). The will of Rebecca Graves, mother of James, dated 1847, says that James is dead. There is much additional material in the courthouse of New Roads, La. about James J. Graves. (R‑8)

She was in the 1870 census for Madison Parish, LA, as head of household, indicating his possible death during or soon after the Civil War. All children by his second marriage were born in Madison Parish, LA. (R‑73)

Thomas Graves (41) was born 10 March (or 10 July) 1799 in Georgia (his tombstone shows born in 1795, but is probably wrong, since it was supposedly put up some years after his death), died 17 Aug. 1837 in Copiah Co., Miss., and was buried in Pine Bluff Cem., Copiah Co. He married Matilda Charity Lowe, called Charity, daughter of Daniel Lowe and Mary Tamer (or Tamar). (According to Goodspeed (Miss.), Mary's maiden name was also Lowe, but that is probably wrong.) Daniel was a son of John Henry Lowe, born 1736 in Halifax Co., NC, died 1820 in Washington Co., GA, married Nancy Butler in 1769. Tradition says Nancy was a daughter of Major James Butler, son of William Butler. This tradition is widespread, but there is evidence that it is wrong. There is a possibility that Nancy's father was Edmund Butler.
John Henry Lowe served as a private soldier in the Revolution in GA, under Col. Elijah Clark, and received a bounty land grant for his services. (See DAR Application 373964.)
Charity was born about 1805 and died between 1860 and 1863. She secondly married Nathan Patrick on 4 Nov. 1852 in Copiah Co., Miss.
The first several children listed below may not be in the correct order of birth. Eli and the last 3 children were all buried in Pine Bluff Cem., Copiah Co. (R‑1, R‑2)

Samuel Graves (42) was born in 1802 or 1801 in Athens, Clarke Co., Ga., and died in 1873 in Jack Co., Texas. He was a stock raiser (rancher) and a Methodist minister, and at times was also a fiddler and a saddle maker. He married Eliza Lawson Brown, daughter of Phillip (or Philip) Brown and Sarah (or Sara) Thermond, in 1820 in Miss. (or Ala.?). She was born in 1805 in Clarke Co., Ga., and died 23 Feb. 1863 in Jack Co., Texas.
Eliza's father, Phillip Brown, living in Mississippi, went to Mobile, Ala., caught pneumonia and died at the age of 60. His wife lived many years and died at the age of 82, leaving a large family.
According to a brief family history written by Samuel's daughter, Amarintha: "My parents were both born in Clarke Co., Ga., but never met until their parents moved them to Mississippi. Here Samuel Graves met Miss Eligha Lawson Brown. They were married at the ages of nineteen and fifteen. They lived a long, happy life together, and raised eleven children to be grown....
When they were first married, he played the violin for the dances. They both loved to dance, so they went one night to a dance, and he, to keep awake, drank a little too much. He laid his violin down and went out into the yard and matched a fight with a good friend. They clinched and both went to the ground and fought a roaring fight. They rolled over an old well in the yard that was covered with rotten boards. As they rolled over, the boards broke in two and went into the well. This narrow escape sobered them up. They apologized to each other and quit fighting. He went into the house and asked his wife to go home with him. They both felt greatly humiliated over the evening's occurrence. After they got home and talked it over, she said, 'Let's get down on our knees and ask God to forgive us for going to this dance.' They got down and prayed, and both professed religion right then. The next Sabbath they went to a Methodist church and both of them joined it. After that they never went to another dance.
In the course of time, he came to the conclusion that he must preach. He traveled a circuit for two years. He took bronchitis of the throat and could not travel anymore, but preached as a local preacher. He attended his farm and blacksmith shop during the week and preached on Saturday and Sunday. He had a fine library and books which he studied, and he never failed to go to his appointments when he was well enough.
In 1839 they moved from Mississippi to Homer, Claiborne Parish, La., settling five miles from Homer on the public road from Sparta to Homer. Here he worked in the blacksmith shop. He built large log houses with porches on each side. This was called the 'Cold Spring Ranch.' He had here a big farm, orchard, and raised fine horses called, in that day, the 'American Breed.' On one of the porches his oldest sons made and sold men's saddles. He hewed the trees out of the timber from the woods, while the girls inside spun and wove their clothing. But on came the time when they must separate. The girls married, and the boys went out into the world to secure their occupation. They found themselves left with two boys and two baby girls.
He then sold his big ranch and moved to Minden, north Louisiana. Here he worked in the saddle shop and sent the children to school. He broke his health working indoors, and in 1852 he moved to Texas with his son-in- law and daughter ten miles out of Tyler, Smith Co. Here his son-in-law died, W. W. McLean. He was appointed his daughter's agent and he went out to collect her debts for her. The people had been so sick, they had no money, but he said if she would take cattle and ponies, they would pay her. He had 75 head of his own cattle that his brother gave him, so in 1854 he took both families and moved to the northwestern border of Texas, settling in the north end of Jack Co., the most beautiful range one ever looked on. Our cattle grew and increased and fattened beautifully. Indians on reserve were within ten miles of our home. They were friendly and traded dressed deer skins for milk, butter and eggs. This condition lasted until about 1859 or 60 when the Indians began stealing our horses and killing every man they could find out on the prairie."
An amusing story about Phillip Brown, Eliza's father was found by Clark C. Graves in a Clarke Co. history. It seems the preacher told the congregation that if they were saved, it would be by the hair of their heads. Phillip Brown rose, and doffing his stocking cap to expose a bald pate, exclaimed, "Then God have mercy upon me!
They were in the 1850 census for Minden, Claiborne Parish, LA, with their son Samuel, their 6 youngest children, and Elizabeth L. Graves, b.c. 1806 in GA. They were in the 1860 census for Jack Co., TX, with their 4 youngest children living with them, and also their widowed daughter Mary with her 2 children. (R‑20, R‑21)

Nathaniel L. Graves (67) was born 31 March 1824 north of Magee's Creek, Washington Parish, La., and died 4 May 1893 at Hay's Creek near Franklinton, LA. His name is given as Nathaniel Estus Graves by R‑28. He married Arcadia (or Arcadie or Arcada) Magee, daughter of Ben Magee and Fannie Ginn, on 26 Dec. 1844. She was born 25 July 1820 and died 19 March 1891. They were both buried in Hayes (or Hays or Hay's) Creek Cem., Ward 8, Washington Parish, LA.
According to Rev. M. K. Graves (R‑28), Nathaniel "had a plantation and many slaves. His 8 sons and 4 daughters multiplied the French and Indian lines. Many of the African American Graves trace their ancestors to members of his slave quarters north of Franklinton, LA."
An excerpt from the Bogalusa Daily News, Dec. 9, 1953, by Russ Williams, with comments by Judieth A. Magee, states: "Nathaniel Graves was born 31 March 1824 along the Amite River in Amite Co., MS. His father was one of 3 brothers who came from England shortly after 1800. One brother, Tom, settled at Jonesville in Simpson Co., MS, another (no name mentioned) near Pascagoula, MS, and Nathaniel's father (no name mentioned), who had married a Staines girl from near Hazelhurst, MS, settled in Amite Co. While the children were very young, Mrs. Graves died, leaving the 2 boys, Nathaniel and Tom, to be raised by their aunt Punice Smith. (To my knowledge, Pernissa was a first cousin; her mother, Clarissa Dillon Smith, was the aunt.) Tom became a physician and practiced in this vicinity. Nathaniel married Arcada Magee, daughter of Benjamin Magee, who lived on the present Donald Warren place." (R‑10, R‑18, R‑28)

CHILDREN OF HUMPHREY GRAVES (32) AND SARAH COOK
John Graves (119) was born about 1818 in LA, and died between 1870 and 1880 in MS. He married Mary Ann Kelly (or Sims) from Wesson, Lincoln Co., Miss. She was born 1822-1825 in FL. There is some question as to whether her maiden name was Kelly, since that is only based on family lore. All their children were born in MS, and their names are from the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records. They lived in Covington Co., MS.
The identification of John Graves as a son of Humphrey is partly because of their living next to each other in the 1860 census. Also, it is family tradition that Jackson Harris Graves (son of John Graves) was a first cousin of Margaret Caroline Graves (daughter of JohnÕs brother, Eli Graves). Finally, note the name Humphrey for one of JohnÕs sons.
The identification of children Wesley, Rance, and Jane, listed by Mrs. Broome (R‑27) is uncertain, but may be as suggested below.
They were in the 1860 census for Covington Co., MS. (R‑17, R‑24, R‑27)

Robert Price (198) was born in Nov. 1830 in Covington Co., MS. He first married Martha Barnes, daughter of William Barnes and Sarah Thompson, and brother of William Barnes, Jr. who married Margaret Norwood (#392), in 1856 in Covington Co., MS. She was born 3 May 1832 in MS, died 13 June 1871 in Jefferson Davis Co., MS, and was buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cem., Jefferson Davis Co., MS. The first 2 children were born in Covington Co., MS, Cornelia and Elvira were born in LA, and Joseph and Mary werenÕt in any census. Robert and Martha were in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Mt. Carmel, Covington Co., MS, with only children Luther and Helen. It seems likely that Joseph, Cornelia, Elvira and Mary were children of Amelia by a first marriage, and not children of Robert.
He married second Amelia (ÒMillyÓ) Wiley in 1872 in Covington Co ., MS. She was born about 1830 in MS. Robert and Amelia were in the 1880 census for Mt. Carmel, Covington Co., MS, with children Cornelia, Elvira, Charley and Robert, and RobertÕs father Wilson Price. They were in the 1900 census for Mt. Carmel, MS, with no children.
