DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS GRAVES OF LUNENBURG CO. & MECKLENBURG CO., VA

GENERATION 1

Thomas Graves (1) may have been born between 1746-66, probably about 1760. However, this is based on the disproven belief that Thomas was a son of an unknown son of Henry Graves (as discussed at the end of this section). This Elizabeth Graves (who may actually have been the mother of this Thomas Graves, but not the wife of a son of Henry Graves) made a bond on 10 May 1767 to give her son Thomas 30 pounds current Va. money when he reached 21 years of age. We do not know the date of Thomas's removal to Mecklenburg Co., Va., but it must have been after 1790, at which time he was residing in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co., Va., with 3 tithables.

Thomas's children were by his first wife, Sarah, as it was not until March 6, 1828, as Thomas Graves, Sr., that he married Henrietta Greenwood in Mecklenburg Co. His will (Mecklenburg W.B. 14, p. 422), dated June 4, 1836, proved Jan. 21, 1839, describes him as "afflicted in body" and makes the following bequests: to wife Henrietta the tract whereon I reside, being the mansion house, to son Nathan my tract of land bought of Crowder, to daughter Mary Graves bed and furniture. The balance of my estate to be sold and out of the proceeds an annuity is to go to wife Henrietta, and the balance is to be divided between the following children: Betsy, Fanny, Patsy, Nancy, Jane and Thomas; to the heirs of my deceased son William, one shilling. At my wife's death her annuity to be divided between my children, Betsy, Fanny, Patsy, Nancy, Jane, Thomas, James and Nathan. Friend John P. Finch exor. Wit. Thomas B. Puryear, Reuben Harris.

Relative to this family are the following Mecklenburg marriages: Thomas Harris and Elizabeth Graves, 28 Dec. 1795; Henry Hastin and Fanny W. Graves, 19 June 1799; William Graves and Frances Elam, 14 Oct. 1795; Thomas Graves and Mary Harris, 26 Dec. 1808; James Graves and Phoebe Elam, 29 Dec. 1818; Nathan Graves and Sally Hudson, 23 Dec. 1816.

Also recorded in Mecklenburg is the marriage of Frederick Graves and Nancy Brandon on Dec. 20, 1800. Whether he was a son of Thomas, Sr., and predeceased his father is not known. Nor is it presently possible to positively identify Thomas Graves, Sr. It was previously thought that the presumption that he was a grandson of Henry⁵ Graves of Hanover Co., VA, and a descendant of Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (genealogy 169), was reasonable. However, the Graves DNA study has proven that the descendants of this Thomas Graves are not descended from Capt. Thomas Graves.

The previous belief was that a son of Henry Graves married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He had apparently died by 1767 and Elizabeth probably married again soon after that to William Townsend (see the discussion in the previous generation for his father). A William and Elizabeth Townsend cosigned a deed with Thomas and Sarah Graves. Either the Thomas Graves referred to is a different person, or some other link in the chain of evidence is faulty.

The 1820 census for Mecklenburg Co., VA listed Thomas Graves, over 45, 1 female over 45 (his wife), and 1 female 16-26. He was not listed in 1830. Henrietta, second wife of Thomas Graves, was still living in 1850 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. (R‑1, R‑5, R‑524)

CHILDREN OF THOMAS GRAVES (1) AND SARAH ‑‑‑‑‑‑

William Graves (2) may have been born about 1775 in VA. He married Frances Elam, daughter of Joel Elam (Mecklenburg W.B. 4, p. 49), on 14 (or 20) Oct. 1795 in Mecklenburg Co., Va., by William Richards, minister; surety: Thomas Graves. He apparently died about 1821 in Mecklenburg Co., Va. (ibid, W.B. 9, p. 259). His estate settled in 1825 (ibid, W.B. 9, p. 275) shows that William Graves, Jr., received one-third part of the estate, "by cash of Daniel Graves balance G. leaf tobacco."

Court records from Mecklenburg Co., Va., having to do with the estate of William Graves, list all the children shown below. One of the papers dated 16 July 1836 mentions Frances Graves of Robertson Co., Tenn., widow of the late William Graves dec'd., etc. It is signed by the children with her in TN: James E. Graves, William Graves, William Dotson, Martha Jane Dotson, James M. Barton or Burton, Elizabeth Barton or Burton. It is authorizing Daniel Graves (still in Mecklenburg Co., Va.) to sell her land (dower right from William Graves estate) in Mecklenburg Co., Va. (R‑1, R‑5, R‑524)

Jane (“Ginsey”) Graves (8) was born about 1786 in VA, and died after 1870. Her name may have been Virginia Jane Graves, according to R‑14. She married Wiley Spain on 25 April 1821 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. He was born about 1785 in VA. They were recorded on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses in District 11, Maury Co., TN. Although the 1860 and 1870 censuses indicated that Jane and Wiley were born about 1800, the 1850 census indicated the earlier dates shown above, and these fit better with other family information. Wiley was a farmer. All their children were born in VA. (R‑14)

Thomas Graves (9) was born about 1788 in Mecklenburg Co., VA, and died after 1850. He married Mary Harris, daughter of James Harris. She was born about 1788. He was in the 1820 census for Mecklenburg Co., VA, as was his father and 3 brothers. He was the only Graves family member listed in the 1830 census for Mecklenburg Co., VA. The children listed below whose names are not known are from the census records, and it is always possible that they are not all the children of Thomas. It is possible that the two females age 15-20 in his household in 1830 were the orphaned daughters of his brother William. They were in the 1850 census for Regiment 22, Mecklenburg Co., VA, with Thomas, 60, Mary, 55, Mary, 23, and Richard, 22. (R‑6)

James Graves (10) was born about 1890 in VA, and died by 1850 (probably about 1840, since the youngest child was 10 in 1850). He married Phoebe Elam on 23 Dec. 1818 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. She was born about 1804 in VA, and died after 1850. She was recorded on the 1850 census in Mecklenburg Co., VA, living next to the family of John Y. Graves (genealogy 281) and in the household or James Flinn (perhaps a nephew of hers and a son of Nancy Graves who married John Flinn). John Y. Graves may have been a son of James and Phoebe (although he seems too old for that) or he could have been the oldest son of Thomas Graves (brother of James). (R‑16)

Nathan was in the 1820 census for Mecklenburg Co., VA, with 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45 (Nathan), 1 female under 10, and 1 female 16-26. They could not be found in the 1830 census. They were in the 1840 census for West District, Mecklenburg Co., VA, with 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50 (Nathan), 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 40-50 (Sally). They were in the 1850 census for Regiment 22, Mecklenburg Co., VA, with Samuel, 27, and Sally, 24, still living with them.

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (2) AND FRANCES ELAM

Daniel Graves (14) was born about 1795 in Virginia, and died in April 1860 in Dallas Co., MO. It is believed that the Graves family in Webster Co., MO (where at least part of the family eventually went) is originally from TN, moving there from VA.

Daniel was married to Mary ("Polly") Spain on 27 March 1820 in Mecklenburg Co., VA, by William Richards, minister. She was born about 1804 in VA, and died in Dallas Co., MO. They moved to Sumner Co., TN by 1840, and to Dallas Co., MO by 1850. Their first 8 children were born in VA.

Daniel and his family were in the 1850 census for 26^th district, Dallas Co., MO, page 344, dwelling 309, living next door to his son William. Living with Daniel and Polly were children Wesley, 18, Virginia, 13, Howell, 8, and Wiley, 5. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑5)

William Graves (15) was born about 1800 in VA, and died about 1870-1880 in Sumner Co., TN. He married Nancy Lawson, daughter of Zachariah Lawson and Agnes Jones (see will of Zachariah Lawson), on 20 (or 21) Dec. 1820 in Charlotte Co., VA. Nancy was born 25 March 1800 in Charlotte Co., VA, and died 17 Nov. 1865 in Sumner Co., TN. Zachariah was a son of George Lawson and Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (per George's will). By 1840 William and his family had moved to Sumner Co., TN. According to R‑15, both William and Nancy are said to have been born in Plymouth, Putnam Co., VA (now WV).

No cemetery record has been found for William Graves. The cemetery record from Nancy's tombstone in District 15, Sumner Co., TN (land owned in 1986 by Paul West) shows: Nancy (Lawson) Graves, wife of William Graves, 25 March 1800-17 Nov. 1865, married 21 Dec. 1820, the mother of nine children.

They were in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Dist. 9, Sumner Co., TN. William was a farmer. (R‑1)

Sarah A. Spain (22) was born about 1822 in VA, and died after 1880. She married Andrew J. Turnbo, son of James Turnbo and Felicia Coffey, on 18 April 1848 in Columbus, Maury Co., TN. He was born about 1818 in TN, and died in 1887 in Tarrant Co., TX. They were in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for District 11, Maury Co., TN. They were in the 1880 census for Precinct 3, Tarrant Co., TX. He was a farmer. All their children were born in TN except for Nathan who was born in TX. (R‑14)

She was born 6 Sept. 1838 in AL, and died 15 Dec. 1916 in Pilot Point, Denton Co., TX. They were in the 1860 census for Precinct 8, Collin Co., TX, with his name listed as Walter J. Spain, and hers as Luciller C. Spain. Living with them were Spotswood McGregor, 59, perhaps her father, and Virginia McGregor, 19. James Matthew Graves (35) was born 2 Feb. 1818 in Mecklenberg Co., VA, and died 29 Sept. 1895 in Melissa, Collin Co., TX. He married Martha Evelina (or Melissa) Coffman, daughter of John Coffman and Elizabeth Witt, in 1849 in Collin Co., TX. She was born 13 July 1830 in IL, and died 3 March 1898 in Anna, Collin Co., TX. They were in the 1860 census for Precinct 2, Collin Co., TX, with children Maranda F., 11, Mary E., 8, Virginia R., 6, and George H., 2, all born in TX. They were in the 1880 census for Precinct 3, Collin Co., TX, with sons G. H., 21, and J. H., 20, and daughter Mary, 26, with Mary’s children J. M., 6, granddaughter, and M. J., 3, grandson. All their children were born in TX.

From a biographical sketch originally published in a book but recently found online:

“James M. Graves, one of the old settlers of Texas, was born in Mecklenbergh county, Virginia, February 1, 1818, lived in his native state until twenty-two years old, then lived in Tennessee three yeears, passed two additional years in Missouri, but found no place to suit him until he arrived in Texas in 1845, where he has since rresided. Thomas Graves, his father, was also a native of Virginia, and of English descent; was a valiant soldier in the War of 1812, and died in 1849.

James M. Graves is the fourth of the six children born to Thomas and Mary (Harris) Graves, the latter a daughter of James Harris of Virginia. James M. came to Texas a single man and here married, in 1849, Miss Martha Coffman, daughter of John Coffman, of east Tennessee, and the result of this union is five Children - Frances, Mary, Virginia, George H. and James H.

Mr. Graves has had a reasonable amount of military experience, and may truly be styled a patriotic American, inasmuch as he has always volunteered his services when our citizens have been called to arms. In 1846 he enlisted for the Mexican War, was in Bell’s regiment, and was on the frontier of Texas awaiting orders to advance to the front, but reinforcements were not required, yet he was ready to go. The government now allows him a pension in recognition of his patriotism on that occasion. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate army, and was ordered to Arkansas, but, owing to his advancing years, was transferred to the home guards, in which he served until the close of the war.

When Mr. Graves first came to Texas he had fifty cents in cash, a flint-lock musket, a pony and an old saddle, but the pony was stolen by the Indians, yet he went to work, and by the time the war for secession opened, he had accumulated considerable wealth, consisting of land, slaves, livestock and $1,000 in gold; at the close of the war he had nothing left, but he went to work again with indomitable energy and now runs a large well-improved farm, on which he is enjoying the fruits of a well-spent life.”

The family was in the 1870 census for Jackson Twp., Boone Co., AR, page 430. They were in the 1880 census for Jackson Twp., Boone Co., AR, page 501A. According to both the 1870 and 1880 censuses, the first 4 children of the second marriage were born in MO, and the other 3 in Harrison, Boone Co., AR (although R‑10 says Isaac was born in AR). Howell Jefferson Graves (59) was born 15 Aug. 1838 in Sumner Co., TN (although the 1880 census says VA), and died 19 Nov. 1918. He first married Calista Dupriest Pinegar, daughter of John Tinsley Pinegar and Eliza Salmons. She was born 8 Feb. 1840 in Mobile, AL, according to the 1880 census. He married second Mrs. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ (Parlee) Pinkersley in Dec. 1909. He moved to Laclede Co., MO before the Civil War. Both Howell and Calista were buried in the Graham Cem., a rural cemetery located near Conway, MO, in Laclede Co.

It is believed that the Pinegar surname originated in Switzerland as Banninger, and the name has been spelled in many different ways, including Penninger.

A granddaughter of Howell Graves, Velma Graves, recalled before her death that as a child she sat on her grandfather’s knee and heard him recount stories of how he helped bury the slain soldiers left on the battlefield of Wilson’s Creek, MO, in 1861. He and others used pitchforks to hurl the corpses into pits. Howell enlisted in the Union army himself in 1864 but was discharged within a few months after contracting smallpox. (R‑8 thinks it was actually measles. His Army Discharge shows he only served 51 days.)

The family was in the 1880 census for Washington, Dallas Co., MO, page 309C, which listed Howell as H.J. Graves, farmer, and listed all children as born in MO. They were in the 1860 census for Washington Twp., Dallas Co., MO, page 72, dwelling 486. (R‑7, R‑8)

William Dennis (“Denny”) Graves (64) was born about 1827-28 in VA, and died in Oct. 1861 "of disease" at home in Sumner Co., TN. He first married Eliza Eidson in 24 Sept. 1846 in Sumner Co., TN. She died after the birth of their daughter Martha. He married second Eliza Roberts on 8 Dec. 1855 in Sumner Co., TN. She was born about 1831. This marriage didn’t last long, and they divorced. The records of their divorce include affidavits, etc., from some of his brothers and sisters. His daughter Martha lived with his parents, as proved by census and court records. R‑1 also has letters written by William’s brother David P. Graves while he was working in Obion Co., TN before the Civil War and afterwards while he was in prison in Point Lookout, MD, in which he mentions his brothers and sisters and parents.

Civil War records (roll 145) show that William served as a private, Co. E, 7th Tenn. Infantry. He enlisted 21 May 1861 in Nashville, Tenn., was AWOL 12 July 1861, and was listed as deserted 15 June (or July?) 1861 from Camp Trousdale. Later records show he was absent ill at home. Records from his estate show bills for doctor visits during this time. One shows a charge of $16 by a Dr. Geo. Thompson for visits in 1861 to William D. Graves at his father’s home, 16 miles each visit, including medicine furnished. (R‑1)

However, he was in the 1880 census for Collin Co., TX, unmarried, living with his parents and his younger brother, so it is not obvious when they could have been married. She was born 8 March 1865 and died 7 Dec. 1890 (this date doesn’t seem to fit). He second married Rosalie (or Roselea) Beyette (or Beauette) about 1881. She was born 13 Jan. 1868 in England, and died 1 Feb. 1888 in Melissa, TX.

He third married Sallie (or Sally) Thomas Jordan about 1892. She was born in Dec. 1860 in KY. They were in the 1900 census for Collin Co., TX, living near his brother James. They were in the 1910 census for Collin Co., TX, with son Jessie B. Graves. They were in the 1920 census for Collin Co., TX, and in the 1930 census for Melissa, Collin Co., TX, with unmarried son Jesse living with them. Mahala Caroline Graves (125) was born 8 March 1846[11] (or 14 March 1845[12]) in Greene Co., MO, and died 23 May 1931 (at age 85 years, 2 months, and 15 days) at the family home in Tioga, Grayson Co., TX. She married John Franklin Rodgers on 1 Jan. 1862 in Parker Co., TX. He was born 8 Aug. 1838 in Greene Co., MO, and died 21 April 1920. They were both buried in the Masonic Cem., Pilot Point, TX. Mahala and John were among the founding members of the Shilo Methodist Church located east of Tioga, Grayson Co., TX. The church was located on the northwest corner of their farm.

Mahala and John also raised Clarissa Addie Counts, called Addie, who was John’s niece. She went to live with them when she was about 11 or 12 years old. She was born in Nov. 1887 in TX. She married Prince Young and had 3 children, 1 boy and 2 girls.

The following obituary was in the Sherman Daily Democrat for May 25, 1931. It was on a newspaper microfilm at the Sherman, Texas Public Library.

“Mrs. John F. Rodgers

Tioga, TX - Mrs. John F. Rodgers, 85, died Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. J. Vanzant, after several days illness. She had been in declining health for several years and ten days ago suffered a fall. She was the wife of a pioneer community builder here.

She had lived in Texas 62 years and is survived by her daughters, Mrs. N. J. Vanzandt, Mrs. Ed Reynolds, and a niece, Mrs. Prince Young; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Dan Graves of Tioga, and Ben Graves of Sherman; and five sisters, in addition to many other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church at 4 p.m. and were conducted by Rev. Roy Massingale, pastor, with burial aat Pilot Point. Rrelatives attending included Mrs. O. Blakley of Sherman.”

He first married Mary Skelton. She was born about 1847, probably in AL. He married second Carrie (‑‑‑‑‑‑) Myers on 10 Feb. 1903. She did not have any children by Daniel, but brought five from her first marriage. He farmed all his life until he retired in 1925.

Funeral services for Daniel Boone Graves, pioneer resident who died Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Elvington, were held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Methodist Church, Tioga, TX, by Elder H. G. Ball. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery, Pilot Point, TX, with Beck Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Graves was born in Missouri on April 26, 1849. He came to Texas in 1861 and to Tioga in 1865. He was a member of the Christian Church.

Pallbearers were Jeff May, Charles Nicholson, C. L. Woodall, J. E. Autrey, C. Graves and George McKinley.

He is survived by 5 children: Mrs. Mollie Huffman of Dallas, Mrs. Eva Hayes of Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Lula Baker of Gainesville, TX, Mrs. Wylie Elvington and Joel Graves of Tioga.

Out of town relatives attending were: Mrs. C. H. “Ben Graves Funeral Here - Retired Cattle Man Dies After Long Illness

N. C. (Ben) Graves, 87 year old retired cattle dealer, died Thursday at 12:40 p.m. at his home, 1525 North Woods. He had been confined to his bed two years and had been critically ill the last 10 days.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Waldo Chapel with burial at Pilot Point.

Surviving are his widow, three sons, O. L. and Roy Graves of San Angelo, and Claud Graves of McKinney; three daughters, Mrs. O. F. Wilson of Plano, Mrs. L. F. Hickey of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Dorothy Cade of the home address and three sisters.

Mr. Graves was born near Springfield, Missouri, April 7, 1854. He came to Texas with his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Sam Graves, when five years old, settling in Parker County near Weatherford. The family later moved in the sixties to Tioga, where Mr. Graves married Miss Mary Clay Simpson on Nov. 17, 1881. They moved to Sherman on Nov. 11, 1918, and had resided here since. The Graves selebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last fall.

Mr. Graves raised cattle in large numbers before railroads were built in Texas and had to drive them through to Kansas, taking months to make the trips.

While living in Parker County, near Springtown, Mr. Graves had much experience with wolves, with buffaloes, and Indians.

He was an intimate friend of the late Tom Waggoner of Fort Worth and knew quite well the famous Sam Bass and Frank James, and the father of former governor Bill Murray of Oklahoma.”

He was secondly married to Mary (Thompson) Keen, daughter of Z. U. Thompson and Evaline Armstead, on 16 Jan. 1915 at Tioga, Grayson Co., Texas, by Solomon Miller. They were in the 1900 census for Carrollton Twp., Boone Co., AR, with Andrew Graves (indexed as Graver), 48, Nancy C., 45, their last 5 children, and her mother Elizabeth Waller, 65. They were in the 1910 census for Carrollton Twp., Boone Co., AR, with Jack, 58, Nancy C., 56, Marion E., 16, Bessie, 18, and Edna, 3 months, granddaughter. They had been married 39 years, and 9 of their 10 children were still living. All their children were born in Boone Co., AR.

In the 1920 census for Batavia, Boone Co., AR, ED 37, page 10B, dwelling 47, there was a Jack Graves, 65, born TN, farmer, father born in VA, mother born in TN, wife Martha, 59, born TN, son Joe, 30, born AR. It was thought that this might be Andrew Jackson Graves with a second wife and a child of Martha by a previous marriage. Even though this is the only Jack Graves that can be found in the 1920 census and a Jack Graves with wife Martha has not been found in the 1910 census,, this is probably not the same person. R‑10 has provided death dates for Jack and Nancy Catherine Graves, showing they were both still alive in 1920, so perhaps they were just missed in that census. (R‑10)

William Henry Graves (172) was born 25 Dec. 1865 at his parents’ farm in Laclede Co., MO, near the town of Conway, MO, and died 21 June 1941. In the 1880’s he migrated from Laclede Co., MO to Johnson Co., AR, where one of his sisters and her husband were already living. He married Martha Ann Garner. She died 11 Nov. 1941, only a few months after her husband.

They eventually purchased a farm of their own near the hamlet of Ludwig in Johnson Co., AR. Locally, William Henry Graves is remembered for being one of the first persons to introduce the cultivation of peaches to Johnson Co. He operated the Mountain Valley Orchards on his farm. By the early twentieth century, the peach industry had become the mainstay of the local economy, and even now an annual peach festival is celebrated in Clarksville every year. William died suddenly when lightening struck a peach shed on his farm in which he and a young farm hand, Zane Hudson, were working. Both were killed instantly. Both William and Martha were buried in the Oakland Cem., Clarksville, AR. (R‑7)

[1] The name of the husband of Elizabeth Graves was previously thought to be Barton or Burton, but Mrs. Suzanne Crawford (R‑1) obtained the court records to prove his name was James M. Benton. She also said it is not known where or when Elizabeth or James died. They never appeared on any census records in Robertson Co. or Sumner Co., TN.

[2] R‑1 said that he never appeared on the census records of Robertson Co. or Sumner Co., TN, so it is not known for sure where he and his wife died.

[3] R‑14 said he was born 3 Oct. 1838 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. The 1850 and 1860 censuses, however, show that he was born after 1840.

[4] Martha was born in MO, according to both the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

[5] R‑14 gave Nathan’s date of birth as Nov. 1866, but the 1860-1880 censuses clearly show that is wrong.

[6] R‑14 said she was born in April 1854. However, the 1860 and 1870 censuses show her born about 1859.

[7] R‑14 gives his date of birth as 1876, but the 1880 census shows him as age 9, born about 1871.

[8] The Sept. 1854 birth date is from the 1900 census; earlier censuses indicate that the 1854 date is probably correct. The 1856 date was from his death certificate.
