AND ALLEN MARSHALL
OF VA, NC AND SC
GENERATION 1
Mary Graves (1) was born 1774-5 in
VA, and died between 1812 and 1820 (or 1820-1830) in SC or TN. She married Allen Marshall, son of Benjamin
Marshall and Kesiah (or Keziah) Brown.
He was born between 1765 and 1774 in Virginia, and died 26 Oct. 1830,
probably in TN. He was descended from
John Marshall of Isle of Wight Co., VA, who lived in Charles City Co., VA
before 1750, by the following descent:
(1) John, (2) John Jr., (3) Benjamin, m. Kesiah Brown, (4) Allen.
In 1800, the Allen Marshall family
lived in Randolph Co., NC next to his father Benjamin. Land purchases were made by him in 1796 and
1799, which were sold in Jan. 1802 and Feb. 27, 1817, the last deed by Allen in
this county. In 1803 he was living in
Spartanburg Co., SC. In 1817 he was
living in Greenville District, SC.
Their first 2 children were born in Randolph Co., NC, and the last 8 in
Greenville Co., SC[1].
On 18 April 1834, James Marshall
applied to the Greenville District Court regarding the division of his brother
Dennis’ estate. He listed the heirs as
his siblings: Lucy Cockran, Tempy
Jones, Polly Pamplett [sic], Sally Fincher, Elizabeth Marshall, John Marshall,

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF MARY GRAVES (1) AND
ALLEN MARSHALL
Dr. James Evan Marshall (4) was
born 27 April 1803, probably in Greenville, Greenville Co., SC[2],
died 8 March 1881 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX, and was buried there on 9
March 1881. He first married his first cousin, Tempy Brady, daughter of
Alexander Brady and Polly Marshall (his aunt), on 30 Nov. 1826 in Lincoln Co.,
TN. She was born 27 May 1813 in Lincoln
Co., TN, and died 8 July 1845 in Salem, Marion Co., IL. He married second Rebecca Amy Haynie on 18
Sept. 1845 in Salem, IL. She was born
28 Feb. 1828 in KY, and died after Oct. 1856, probably in Wise Co., TX. This family was recorded on the 1850 census
in Marion Co., IL. He married third
Mrs. Eliza (‑‑‑‑‑‑) Howard before
1860. James and Eliza were recorded on
the 1860 census in Prairie Point, Wise Co., TX. Also living with the family was her son John W. Howard, age 9,
born in KY. She was born about 1815 in
KY. It is believed she returned to IL;
she did not appear on the 1870 census with him. For his fourth wife he married Susan A. Payne[3].
Dr. Marshall "read
medicine" with Dr. Goodlett of S.C.
He later moved to IL, where he lived until the 1850's, when he moved to
Wise Co., TX. It is said that the first
train that rolled into Salem, IL, ran over Dr. Marshall's dog, so he headed for
the uninhabited area of Wise Co., TX, in the 1850's, saying that he wasn't
going to put up with such things.
Submitted by R‑2, the
following is from a chapter about James E. Marshall from the book, Newark, Its Heritage and Landmarks, by
Etta Bearden Pegues:
“Dr. James E. Marshall was a
prosperous merchant in Salem, Marion Co., IL until 1855. Prior to that time he had been a member of
the Illinois State House of Representatvies from Marion Co. for two terms, 1840
and 1842. He was a Democrat…
It was on Aug. 17, 1855 that he and
his large family settled on Durrett Creek with only the sounds of wilderness, a
wolf’s howl, and owl’s hoot, a turkey tom’s gobble or a frog’s croak to disturb
the tranquility. He brought with him
from Illinois stallions, jacks and a nucleus of young mares, which fact seems
to further indicate that he had been given information as to the potentialities
of the territory to which he was going, and where he settled just twenty-two
days before the Odessa post office was established…
Dr. Marshall had no formal college
education. He acquired his medical
knowledge studying with Dr. Goodlett of Greenville Co., SC. He did not practice medicine while in Wise
Co. His business while he lived at
Odessa consisted of raising fine saddle horses and mules.
Once when he had sold some mules
for a considerable sum of money that he had hidden at his home some desperate
characters tried to rob him. It is said
they tied him to a limb, head down, and with red hot irons burned his feet
until his toe nails came off. But he
never revealed the hiding place of his money…
Dr. Marshall’s life at Odessa was
not an easy one. He was considered a
well-to-do man when he settled in Wise Co.
But it was only a few years afterward when the Civil War broke out. During that trying period Indians were very
troublesome….When they stole his horses and mules, wherein lay his wealth, they
robbed him of his fortune. That was one
of the reasons he fled, in 1866, to the fort – Ft. Worth. Another, and very noble cause, he went there
to treat the soldiers who were suffering from dengue fever, thus returning to
his first love, the practice of medicine.”
His first 4 children were born in
Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN, the next 9 in Salem, IL, and Rebecca in Wise
Co., TX. (R‑2, R‑3)

He married Harriet Regina Jennings, daughter of Onas Waters Jennings and

R‑2, R‑3)
The following biographical record
is from Portrait and Biographical Record
of Clinton, Washington, Marion and Jefferson Counties, Illinois, Chapman
Publishing Co., 1894: “Benjamin F.
Marshall: Cashier of the Salem National
Bank, was born in Lincoln Co., TN, July 19th[4],
1828. His father, a native of SC, was
for many years engaged in merchandizing, and subsequently practiced medicine, a
profession to which he has since devoted himself. His mother is a native of TN.
His education was obtained in the common schools of Salem, IL. On leaving school he was employed as clerk
by his father, and continued to act in that capacity during the ensuing two
years. He then entered the service of
the Unted States as second lieutenant, and remained in the army, serving in the
Mexican war, for a period of eighteen months.
In 1848 he abandoned the field and
returned to his home. For three years
thereafter he conducted a general merchandizing store. He was then elected circuit clerk, and
served four years. For a year he next
engaged in operating in real estate, and was then elected judge of the county
court.
In 1858 he was admitted to the
practice of law, and upon his retirement as judge, commenced its prosecution,
associated with J. B. Martin.
In August, 1862, he entered the one
hundred and eleventh regt. of IL infantry as regimental quartermaster, and
served until 1864, at which date he was discharged on account of
ill-health. Upon his return home he
resumed the practice of law, establishing himself at Cairo, where he became
associated with Gen. Haynie. In 1867 he
returned to Salem, and was instrumental in the organization of the Salem National
Bank, an instiution of which he was made cashier, and is a prominent
stockholder. He is still the leading
spirit of this, one of the most favorably known establishments in this section
of the state, and is widely recognized as a man of sound financial abilities
and sterling inteity. He was married in
1850 to Harriet R. Jennings of Walnut Hill, Marion Co., IL.”
Another article states: Benjamin “was a devoted member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, and aided greatly in the extension of religious
work in the county. Socially, he was a
Master Mason, and as an ardent temperance man was Treasurer of the Roal
Templars’ lodge, and voted the Prohibition ticket…. He was a very quiet, unassuming man, generous to a fault, and in
the community where he so long made his home occupied a high position among its
best residents. Mr. Marshall was always
interested in schools, and when a member of the Board aided very materially in
the erection of the fine school edifice.”

Etta Bearden Pegues:
“Martha Elizabeth Marshall was
commissioned as postmaster of Odessa on Dec. 11 1856 and served as such until
her marriage to John S. Morris…. He was
a school teacher, justice of the peace and postmaster at Prairie Point (now
Rhome) at the time. Also, his
descendants take pride in the fact that he helped to survey the Decatur
townsite. His wife and children lived
at the home of her father in Odessa while he served the cause of the
Confederacy. Their descendants recall
having often heard their ancestors tell of the Indian raid of Prairie
Point. The experience was so terrifying
it remained vividly in the minds the very young children. They told of how the Indains would circle
the settlements, hanging to the sides of their horses and shooting from under
the necks of the horses. Becoming so
weary with this sort of terror the Morris family fled with Dr. Marshall to the
fort.”

[1] Clark Hibbard (R-1) said he thinks he originally told Lillian Sheppard (R-3) that the last 9 children were born in Spartanburg Co., SC, but he now believes they were born in Greenville Co., SC. Census records of 1810 and 1820 show that Allen Marshall lived in Greenville Co., and Greenville Co. adjoins Spartanburg Co.
[2] It had previously been thought that he was born in Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., SC, but it is now believed that Greenville is the correct place.
[3] It is interesting that there was a Susan Alexander Graves, born 1810 in VA., died 1887 in Hopkins Co., TX, only about 100 miles from Wise Co. where James Marshall lived. Her husband, E. Alexander Payne, died in 1874, so she would have been available for remarriage at the time James Marshall married a Susan A. Payne. However, she would have been too old to have a child. In addition, the 1880 census shows that she was 37 years of age at that time (b.c. 1843), not born 1810, so they are definitely not the same person.
[4] This article lists his date of birth as 19 July, however, all other sources listed it as 9 July.
