DESCENDANTS OF DR. THOMAS GRAVES AND CHARITY ------ OF MARION CO., SC & PIKE CO., AL

GENERATION 1

Dr. Thomas ("Tom") Graves (1) was born about 1789 in SC, and died after 1860 in Pike Co., Ala.  No proof has yet been found that he was the father of Joseph James Graves, and until it is found this link should be considered tentative.  He apparently lived in Marion Co., SC, since his son was born there.  He married Charity ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1791 in SC, and probably died before 1860.

He was in the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, page 263, with wife Charity, and children Rebecca, James, Samuel, and Ephraim.  He was in the 1860 census for Eastern Div., Pike Co., AL, Bibb P.O., page 299, with no wife, and children Rebecca and Ephraim.  In 1860 he was living next to his presumed son, Joseph Graves.  He was listed as a physician in 1850 and a farmer in 1860.  All family members were born in SC.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF THOMAS GRAVES (1)

Joseph James Graves (2) was born 18 June 1818 in Marion Co., SC, died 30 March 1888 in Fannin Co., TX, and was buried in Grove Hill Cem., Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas.  He married Telitha Jackson about 1846 in Pike Co., AL[1].  She was born 2 Jan. 1828, died 13 April 1913, and was also buried in Grove Hill Cem.  Their graves are under a large Eastern Cedar tree near the main highway and the church parking lot.  The cemetery is located just outside Leonard, Fannin Co., TX.  Telitha was supposedly a first cousin to Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the U.S.

Buried in Grove Hill Cem. to the right of J.J. and Telitha are what appear to be other members of this same family.  Christina A., wife of C.J. Graves, b. Aug. 9, 1849, d. Oct. 13, 1890.  On the same stone, J.C. born and died Oct. 6, 1890, and the epitaph "Much of us hopes to join you at last on the beautiful heavenly shore."  Charles J. Graves Sr., b. April 9, 1859, d. May 25 1922.  Buried to his right is John W. Graves, b. Jan. 24, 1879, d. Jan. 19, 1964.  To his right is a marker with the following: Graves, married Dec. 19, 1964, Methodist Minister, Rev. Charles J. Jr., b. Feb. 13, 1882, d. Dec. 13, 1975.  His beloved wife, Stella Ann, b. June 27, 1880, d. Nov. 12, 1951.  Marker to their right reads: Beloved mother and grandmother, Gladys Graves Covington, wife of Ernest, b. May 21, 1908, d. Oct. 28, 1984.  (Ernest Covington lived in Longview, TX and/or McKinney, TX.)

It is likely that Charles J. Graves, born 1859, was an older brother of James Thomas Graves.

Joseph Graves and Telitha were in the 1860 census for Eastern Div., Pike Co., AL, Bibb P.O., page 299.  Living with them were Sarah A. Booker, 12, Charles J. Booker, 1 (is this the person referred to as Charles J. Graves, above?), and William Booker, 10, all born in AL.  Living next door was John Jackson, 37, probably a brother of Telitha.  Sarah Booker was in the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, living with William Pope (age 40, b. NC), Mary Pope (possibly his wife with maiden name McMullian, or possibly his sister) (age 45, b. NC), and Sarah Pope (age 35, b. NC).  No one else with the surname of Booker was listed in Pike Co. in 1850.

Joseph and Telitha were in the 1880 census for Dist. 180, Beat 3, Washington Co., AL, page 164A, with children Joseph, 19, James T., 18, Charity A., 15, Mary A., 13, and Martha J., 11, all born in AL.

The 1870 census for Beat 3, Washington Co., AL, State Line P.O., page 133, dwelling 112, listed Joe Graves, 40, Mary, 35, Jefferson, 14, Joseph, 12, James, 10, Mary, 8, Charity, 6, and Martha, 3.  Joe was shown as born in TN and all the others in MS.  This is almost certainly the same family.  State Line is in MS, on the county line between Wayne Co. and Greene Co., MS.  (R‑1)

James Thomas Graves (9) was born 8 Sept. 1861 in Brundidge, Pike Co., AL, died 27 Oct. 1953, and was buried at Rose Hill Cem., Tyler, Smith Co., Texas.  He married Mary Ann (probably "Pollyanna") Green on 20 July 1882 in Chatom, Washington Co., Ala.  Her family was supposedly from Ohio.  She was born 20 Dec. 1860 in Millry, Washington Co., Ala., died 14 Sept. 1944 in Cherokee Co., Texas, and was also buried at Rose Hill Cem.  Their graves are on the highest hill, under a pine tree.

Her parents were Mary Ann Cheesebrough of the Cheesebrough Mfg. Co. in New York and Wilson Green.  They supposedly moved to Alabama for Wilson's health, and he died when his daughter was about five years old (in about 1865).

Through the courtesy of Harvey C. Byrd, Grand Secretary, Grand Lodge of Texas, Waco, Texas, the following information about J. T. Graves has been found from Masonic Grand Lodge records.  He first affiliated with Pine Forrest Lodge No. 631 in Saltillo, Texas on 20 June 1896, served the lodge as Junior Steward the same year and demitted on 12 June 1897.  Since the records do not show where his previous lodge was, he probably came from another state.  He next affiliated with Athens Lodge No. 165 in Athens, Henderson Co., Texas in 1898 and again demitted on 14 Oct. 1898.  He then affiliated with Relief Lodge No. 236 in Kerens, Texas on 25 Feb. 1899 and again demitted on 15 Nov. 1902.  The Masonic records do not show his whereabouts until 22 Oct. 1910 when he affiliated with Jacksonville Lodge No. 108 in Jacksonville, Cherokee Co., Texas.  He served his lodge as Junior Deacon in 1911 and as Senior Deacon in 1912.  He again demitted from this lodge on 3 July 1915 and re-affiliated with the same lodge on 7 April 1917, where he was a member in good standing until his death on 27 Oct. 1953. He worked for the railroad.

J. Dixon Graves, Jr. said, "My Dad told me that when he was a small child, he was visiting J. T. and they went outside to a beehive that he kept behind the house in a log beehive.  J. T. apparently robbed this hive bare-handed and my Dad asked him if the bees stung him.  He answered that 'Ow a little bit but it does not really hurt that much.'  Maybe this is why he lived to be in his nineties."  (R‑1)

[1] The marriage date estimate of 1846 was from R‑1.  However, if Telitha was the one who was a daughter of James N. Jackson and Charity, she was still living with her parents in 1850, so couldnŐt have married until after that.  James N. Jackson and his family was in the 1850 census for Pike Co., AL, page 237, living close to Archibald Graves (probable brother of Thomas) and Harriet (gen. 63).
