GENERATION 1

 

William Graves (1) was born about 1805 in Brickend (or Pieckeridge ?), Hertfordshire, and died before the 1871 census.  He married Jemima Hulme on 9 March 1828 at St. Botolph Bishopsgate, London[1].  Her surname has also been given as Hume, but her brother Clement Hulme consistently used the spelling of Hulme in the census records.  She was born about 1808 in Greenwich, Kent.  They were in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses for London, Middlesex.  He was a messenger.  Martha Graves, 55 (b.c. 1786, probably his mother), laundress, was in the 1841 census with William.  In the 1871 census for West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, Jemima Graves, widow, 63, was living with her brother, Clement Hulme, widower, 67.  (R‑2)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)

William James Graves (3) was born about 1831 in St. Saviour, Southwark or Bermondsey, Middlesex, now part of London.  He married Esther Harmsworth on 5 Aug. 1849 at St. Giles Church (or St. John’s, Waterloo?), Lambeth, Surrey, England.  Residence at time of marriage was given as John Hall (?).  He was of full age and she was a minor.  She was born about 1830 in North Warnborough, Hampshire.  She was a daughter of James Harmsworth, farmer.  They lived in Islington, London, England.  He was a law writer.  They were in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Islington, St. Andrews, Middlesex, London.  He was listed in 1861 as a writing clerk, and in 1871 as a stationer’s assistant.  Living with them in 1861 was Elizabeth Goddard, niece, age 1.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Edward Henry Graves (9) was born 10 Jan. 1849 in Bulegetto St., London, Middlesex, and died 19 Jan 1907.  He married Elizabeth Jane Latimer on 3 March 1870 in Belturbet, Ireland.  She was born in Ireland and died in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.  (R‑4)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM J. GRAVES (3) AND ESTHER HARMSWORTH

Esther Lucy Ann Graves (10) was born 28 Feb. 1850 at 61 Gee St., St. Luke’s, London, Middlesex.  She married Alfred Henry Holmes, called Henry, on 25 Dec. 1870 in Islington, Greater London.  He was born 7 Dec. 1849 in Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire.  His parents were Robert Holmes, cabinet maker, and Caroline Harris (or Walters[2]), who married in 1844 in Hackney, London.  His grandfather was Leonard Holmes, auctioneer.  Henry was a twin and was one of 7 children.  After Esther died, her husband Henry remarried and had 2 more sons.

They were in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses for Islington, London.  They lived at 214 Gifford St. in 1871, at 98 Frederick St. in 1881, and at 37 Havelock St. in 1891 and 1901.  He was a photographic cabinet maker.  (R‑2)

  30.  Walter Holmes; served in the Boer War.  Name from Maureen Cumber’s great-uncle, but can’t find him in census records.

 

William Henry Graves (11) was born about 1851 in London, England, and died 31 Jan. 1942 in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia.  He married Julia Fry on 4 Dec. 1874 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.  They both arrived from England 30 Nov. 1874 in the Toowoomba, and landed in Rockhampton.  All their children were born in Rockhampton.  (R‑1)

Emma Clara Graves (18) was born 28 Dec. 1875 in Kamptee, India, and died in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.  She married James Percival Birch.  He was born in 1875 in Chelmsford, England, died 27 Feb. 1915 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, and was buried in Hardwood Hill, Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.  (R‑4)

Ruth Holmes (26) was born 5 May 1884 in Islington, London, Middlesex, England, died 1 March 1939 in Melrose, Middlesex Co., MA, U.S.A., and was buried 4 March 1939 in Wyoming Cem., Melrose, Middlesex Co., MA.  She married Walter Reston, son of James Henry Reston and Elizabeth Hannah Weddell, in Sept. 1908 in Islington, Greater London, England.  He was born 22 Sept. 1882 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, died 2 Nov. 1960 in Melrose, Middlesex Co., MA, and was buried 4 Nov. 1960 in Wyoming Cem., Melrose, MA.  They emigrated to America in 1913, and were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Everett, Middlesex Co., MA, with one child, Oliver.

It was said by one source that she went to America, supposedly arrived in Kansas in a covered wagon, and had a chicken farm.  Since that does not seem to apply to Ruth, perhaps that was her sister Mary who also went to America.  (R‑5)

Louisa Corney Holmes (28) was born 13 Aug. 1886 at 41 Havelock St., London, and died 1 May 1964 at Highgate, London.  She married Frederick George Williams on 2 Feb. 1914 in Hackney, London.  He was born in 1885 in Islington, and died in 1917 in France.  (R‑2)
