Rev. 17 Jan. 2011, Gen. 165
DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM
GRAVES AND ELIZABETH YORK
OF DOVER, NH
GENERATION 1
William Graves (1), an original
settler in America, was born in England.
He may have been the William Graves who came to Massachusetts in 1645
(or 1635?) as a 13 year old boy, and who was listed with the family of John
Upham. If so, he was born about
1632 It is likely that this boy
was either coming to join relatives already in the Massachusetts Bay Colony or
that he was an indentured servant.
(According to R‑2, William Graves sailed from Weymouth, England
for Massachusetts Bay in 1635. The
Rev. Joseph Hull, a native of Somersworth, England, probably had something to
do with emigration of the Upham family.)
He married Elizabeth York, widow of
his neighbor Richard York, about 1674.
Richard was taxed at Dover, Strafford Co., NH as early as 1657, and died
in 1674. William Graves first
appeared in the public records of this country as a resident of Dover, NH,
where he was taxed at Oyster River (now Durham), Strafford Co., 22 Sept.
1659. He was living at Portsmouth,
Rockingham Co., NH in 1671. He was
living in Exeter, Rockingham Co., NH in 1701, where a tract of land was granted
to him in 1698. He made an
agreement with his stepson, John York, on 8 June 1681 in relation to the estate
of Richard York. He was wounded
and his property at Oyster River demolished by the Indians and his application
for relief was made to the Council of the province of New Hampshire on 8 Jan.
1694‑5. He was living in
Dover in 1704.
William Graves apparently later
married the widow of Salathiel Denbo.
William may also have had a first marriage with children before marrying
Elizabeth York. (R‑200, R‑204)
Children - Graves
+2. William Graves, b.c. 1675, m. Margaret Redman, 24 Sept. 1702,

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)
AND ELIZABETH YORK
William Graves (2) was born about
1675. He was described as a farmer
or husbandman (an old name for farmer).
He married Margaret Redman, daughter of John Redman and Martha Cass, on
24 Sept. 1702 in Hampton, NH. He
first appeared in the records in Exeter, NH, where he testified in court, in
1697. In 1701 he bought land in
Exeter.
William Graves provided for each of
his children in his will. His wife
had apparently died before him.
The will, dated 10 Sept. 1744 and probated 25 March 1747, gave Mary
eight pounds in "bills of old Tenor", a little pot, fire shovel and tongs,
and to Mary and Deliverance, a widow, the use of one room in his dwelling
house, so long as they remained unmarried. Apparently they were young enough that they might be
expected to marry. Since the
father's will was made before Mary was married, we can only assume that she was
the Mary Graves who married Stephen Hazelton (New Hampshire Probate Records, vol. 33, p. 210; Noyes, vol. 1, p.
283).
All their children were born at
Exeter, NH. (R‑200, R‑202)

Joseph Graves (5) was born about
1706. He married Mehitable (or

Benjamin Graves (6) lived in
Exeter, N.H. He married Anna ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He received from his father a farm, the
family homestead, on the road from Exeter to Kingston. He also had lands in Poplin. His will, dated 9 March 1788, was
probated 20 Nov. 1793. (R‑200)
Children - Graves
+27. Benjamin Graves, b. 1765, m. Polly Prescott, 7 March 1792, d.
18 Nov. 1797.
28. Ruth Graves, m. Seth Johnson.
29. Mary Graves, d. 23 Oct. 1793.
Mary Graves (7) married Stephen
Hazelton, son of Stephen Hazelton, Jr. and Emma Kent. Mary died 13 Nov. 1801 in Hebron, N.H. Stephen was born 28 Jan. 1706 in Bradford,
Mass., and died 17 Aug. 1795 in Hebron, N.H. He was a schoolmaster.
Early in manhood Stephen moved from
Tewksbury, Mass. to a place called Dunstable West Parish in the town of Hollis,
N.H. Very few records from
Dunstable, now Nashua, survive. He
signed an appeal on 18 June 1747 for troops to protect the settlers, for this
was on the western frontier, and Indian attacks were frequent. On March 20, 1755, he sold land in
Hollis, N.H. to Isaac Stevens of Andover.
Whether he moved to Cockermouth (later Hebron), N.H. at this time is not
known, but he had moved there before 1775.
Stephen Hazelton was married
twice. The only biography found of
him states that the name of neither wife is known. However, it is known from her death record that his second
wife was Mary Graves. By his first
wife, Stephen had one son, Samuel, born in 1735, and died in 1812 at
Hebron. Samuel was a soldier in
the French and Indian War, a member of the New Hampshire Provincial Congress,
and a farmer at Hebron.
All efforts to find when and where
Stephen Hazelton and Mary Graves were married failed. They were not married in Hollis, and no family named Graves
lived there. Apparently they were
married in some town in which the records were destroyed. All people of that generation named
Mary Graves were checked, in any N.H. records and in any Massachusetts town
near Hollis. There were just
two. One married in Andover,
Mass. The other was Mary, the
daughter of a William Graves who died in Exeter in 1746 or 1747.
It should be emphasized that it
cannot be proved that this second Mary Graves was the wife of Stephen
Hazelton. However, since Exeter is
one of the towns where the records have not been well kept, and there are no
marriage records in Exeter for this period, there seems to be little question.
All the children of Stephen and
Mary were born in Hollis, N.H. (R‑5,
R‑202)

1711 or 1714. She married Benjamin
Eastman, brother of Edward Eastman who married her sister Deliverance, and
daughter of Samuel Eastman and Elizabeth Scriven (or Scribner), on 16 Aug. 1733
in Kingston, Rockingham Co., NH.
Benjamin was born 13 July 1710.

William Badger, and a daughter of William Badger Sr. and Anstiss Emerson.
All their children were born in

also listed an Austress Graves, born 11 April 1798, but it is likely that this
was a misreading of the middle name of Mary Agnes Graves, although it could
have been a daughter named for Elizabeth Badger's mother, and perhaps a twin of
Mary. (R‑200)

Kallock?), on 7 Oct. 1855. She was
born 22 Jan. 1837 in Albion, ME, and died 12 March 1927 in CA.
His obituary follows:
In his eighty-first year, Òfull of
years and honor,Ó Mr. Edward Small Graves died at his home in St. George, on
Tuesday evening of last week, April 12.
He was a man well known through all this section of the state, and one
of whom naught but good can be said.
By his upright and useful life and spotless integrity, he won the
respect and esteem of all, and those of us who were permitted to know him well
and see the many true and noble qualities and the warm and benevolent fooling
displayed in his daily walk and conversation, loved him well and were proud and
happy to call him friend. In his
last moments, he recalled with satisfaction and pleasure that he had no
enmities with any of his fellow men to be composed, and he died, as he had
lived, in peace with all mankind.
His memory will ever be tenderly cherished by many friends who knew and
appreciated his sterling manhood and admirable character.
Mr. Graves was born on October 5,
1823, in the old homestead of the family, where he had spent the greater part
of his life, and where he died. He
was one of that band of brave pioneers the story of whose adventures and
achievements forms one of the most thrilling and important of our countryÕs
history, the ÒForty-NinersÓ or ÒArgonauts,Ó who first developed the now rich
and populous empire of California.
In 1849, soon after the discovery of gold in that then distant and
unknown land, he started, with a party of some ten or twelve men of this
vicinity for the new El Dorado.
Among those who accompanied him, were Capt. Edward C. Spaulding and Mr.
Joshua Thorndike, of South Thomaston, and William Sayward of Rockland. We have not the other names, but we
believe that Mr. Graves was the last survivor of the party. Mr. Sayward afterward became a wealthy
and well known banker in California.
They went by steamer to New York, where they chartered a small vessel,
in which they went to a Mexican port and crossed to the Pacific coast and there
took another vessel and made their way to the then new mining district, and
took up claims at the place where the flourishing city of Placerville
afterwards arose, but then known by the euphonious designation of ÒHangtown,Ó
from the frequency with which primitive justice was dealt out to evil doers by
the famous Vigilance Committee. Mr
Graves was an active and respected member of this body of brave and honest men
who eliminated the murderers and robbers of the settlement by methods that,
while not warranted by law, have been vindicated by time and results. Nine desperadoes were hanged to the
limb of an oak tree that is still standing and known as the ÒOld Civilizer.Ó Mr. Graves was here about two years,
and was very successful, having made a great deal of money mining. He came home with the intention of
arranging his affairs and returning to California and settling there
permanently. After a brief stay,
he left with three companions to make a second visit to the land of gold. Those who accompanied him were Messrs.
Ralph Chapman and George Hall, of Rockland, and Asa Coombs, of South Thomaston. Mr. Coombs is the only one of the party
now living. They went by way of
the Isthmus, and sailed from New York in the steamer Daniel Webster, on her
first trip. This boat was owned by
Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and was the first of the ocean steamers built
by him. Mr. Vanderbilt made the
trip to Panama with them. In crossing
the Isthmus, Mr. Graves contracted Chagres fever, and came near dying. He recovered sufficiently to continue
his journey, but on his arrival in California his health was much broken, and
he was advised that to remain would mean a speedy death. He therefore returned home, and took up
his residence at the ÔKeag village, South Thomaston, where he opened a store.
This was at the time of the great
shipbuilding boom in this section, when eleven large vessels were built in
South Thomaston in one year. Mr.
Graves, in company with Messrs. Shepherd Small, Richard Hayden, and William
Graves, entered extensively into shipbuilding, and several first-class ships
were built in their yard. Among
them was the famous ship ÔPathfinder.Ó
With most of the other men engaged in that business at that time, they
were swamped financially by the failure of the ShipbuildersÕ bank, which swept
away the greater part of the considerable fortune that Mr. Graves had
accumulated, and put an end to the business. He then returned to the old homestead, and resided there
during the remainder of his life.
In 1877, when the Black HillsÕ gold
craze broke out, he organized a party to explore the alleged gold fields in
Nebraska, the Dakotas and Wyoming.
The party included Messrs. Charles Luce, of South Thomaston; C. E. Paul,
and F. E. Small, of Rockport; C. W. Livingston, of Rockland; Ed. Sherman, of
Head of the Bay; and two men from Vinalhaven, one of whom, named Hill, was
murdered for his money and valuables in Haywood, South Dakota. The party trailed by wagon train from
Sidney, Nebraska, to Haywood, a distance of some 300 miles, but like most of
the expeditions of that time, the search for gold was unsuccessful, and they
returned home within the year.
Except for the death of Hill, the trip was without serious mishap, but
the train that prreceded them into the foot-hills was attacked by the Sioux
Indians and all the party killed, and that following was attacked.
In 1855, he married Miss Mercy K.
Hathorn, who is now with her children in California. They had a large family of children, of who the following
named survive: Annie, wife of Wm. C. Taylor, of Butte City, Montana; Millie D.,
Jennie F., and Leland Graves, of San Francisco; Edna, wife of Wm. W.
Chamberlain, who resides in a California town not far from San Francisco; Alta
Graves, of Portland; Samuel D. Graves, of Boston; and Clyde Graves, the
youngest, who resides on the homestead farm.
Mr. Graves has been in failing
health for some years, and the cause of his death was BrightÕs disease. The funeral was held on Friday
forenoon, Rev. H. G. Clark, pastor of the Baptist church at St. George
officiating. The burial was in the
family lot in the South Thomaston cemetery. (R‑17, R‑200)

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL GRAVES, JR.
(134)
George M. Graves (309) was born 4
Oct. 1821 and died 31 Oct. 1883.
He first married Mary A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He secondly married Julia ‑‑‑‑‑‑. John Card Graves stated that George's
widow, Mary A., died 12 Aug. 1889 at Exeter, N.H., aged 66 years, 4 months.
According to Mr. Arthur L. Graves,
there is good reason to doubt the statement that George's widow, Mary A., died
in Exeter in 1889. The Exeter Town
Clerk wrote that he had no record of such a death. Moreover, according to Robert E. Eliason in his booklet Graves and Company, Musical Instrument
Makers, it is said that: "Sometime before 1870 George M. Graves was
married again, evidently to a woman of some wealth." Also, George M. Graves and his last
wife, Julia, were both buried in Lot 3212, Forget-Me-Not Path, in the Forest
Hills Cemetery in Boston, Mass.
Julia died in 1911.
Arthur L. Graves wrote that as a
boy he knew Julia Graves as Aunt Julia, and that she visited him and his
parents in Wells River, Vt., more than once. In 1981 he still had her photograph showing her sitting on
the front steps with the rest of the family.
"Another question about George
M. Graves is: Vital Statistics in the State House in Boston show that he died
in Cambridge and that his occupation was that of Master Mariner. It is hard to believe the statement
about his having a Mariner ticket because other data gathered by Dr. Eliason
was that he spent much, if not all, of his adult life working with his father,
Samuel Graves, Jr., in the production of musical instruments."
George M. Graves had no
children. (R‑1, R‑200)
Edgar Clay Graves (316) was born 20
July 1848 at Winchester, N.H., and died 11 June (or 14 July) 1914 in Wells
River, Vt. He married Ella Jane
Leslie, daughter of George Reid Leslie and Mary Grant, and granddaughter of
Alexander Leslie of Londonderry, N.H., on 5 Dec. 1883 at Wells River, Vt. She was born 5 May 1850 and died 13
Feb. 1913. He was appointed
Postmaster under the first Cleveland Administration and served until 14 May
1889. He was a very skillful interior
painter and decorator and lived at Wells River until his death. Both children were born at Wells River,
Vt. (R‑1, R‑200)

According to A Family Island in Penobscot Bay, The Story of Eagle Island, pages
236-238: "The astounding memory of Harold E. Ball, 92-year-old son of
Capt. John Ball, has provided some interesting and valuable information
concerning his father and his brother, Capt. Howard T. Ball, both of whom were
keepers of the Eagle Island Light (in Penobscot Bay, Maine)....
As a young man, Capt. John Ball
attended the North Yarmouth Academy, where he studied navigation. He then went to sea as a mate on a
sailing vessel. He was licensed as
a ship captain and was skipper of a square-rigged vessel at the age of 23. For a number of years, he served as
captain of square-riggers sailing from New York to various world ports.
Apparently as he passed the middle
years of his life, his interests shifted from the sea to lighthouse
keeping. He entered the Lighthouse
Service as keeper of Heron Neck Light, which is located on the southern end of
Green Island and marks the approach to Carvers Harbor from the southwest. In 1883, at the age of 60, he began a
30-year period of service for the Ball family at the Eagle Island Light. Both John Ball and his son Howard were
at the light for 15-year periods.
Capt. Ball, according to reports,
was the 'old sea captain, toe-the-line type of person' and ran a businesslike
establishment. His relations with
the islanders were excellent, and he was well-liked. It is interesting to note that he had interests other than
the sea and lighthouses. His son
Harold recalls that the captain was very much interested in horse racing and
never missed a race if it was within reasonable distance. His wife died in 1889, while he was
still stationed at the light. He
retired in 1898 and lived at the light with his son Howard until the time of
his death in 1905. He was buried
in the family plot at Hancock Point." (R‑4, R‑201)
