DESCENDANTS OF SARAH GRAVES AND DAVID JACKSON SELPH OF NC & AL

GENERATION 1

Sarah Graves (1) was born 22 June 1812 in North or South Carolina, and died 20 March 1853 in AL. She married David Jackson Selph on 26 Jan. 1837 in AL. He was born 10 May 1812 in GA. They were in the 1850 census for Fayette Co., NC. In the Dawes file, Sarah’s son, Francis Marion Graves, stated that Sarah was half Choctaw. All their children were born in AL, possibly all in Fayette Co.

It is believed that Sarah was descended from genealogy 104, a daughter of either Benjamin Graves or Thomas Graves (who was probably his brother). (R‑1)

Montgomery Cowan Selph (2), called Cowan, was born 23 Dec. 1838 (or 1837 according to the 1900 census) in Fayette Co., AL, and died 1910-1920 in Benton Co., AR. He married Nancy Elizabeth Smith on 20 Nov. 1865 in Tippah Co., MS. She was born about 1842 in MS, and died after 1920. They were both buried in Bethel Methodist Cem., Hickory Flat, Benton Co., MS. They were in the 1900 census for Benton Co., MS. He was a farmer. They had no natural children (according to the 1900 census), but adopted three daughters, all born in MS. (R‑1)

Harriet (“Larret”) Agnes Selph (4) was born 29 Oct. 1842 in AL, and died 1900-1910 in Benton Co., AR. She first married G. R. McLain. She married second James Martin Harkins, son of William Stewart Harkins and Katherine Lemons, on 21 Dec. 1859 in Tippah Co., MS. He was born about 1835 in AL, and died 1 July 1862 in the Battle of Malvern Hill[1]. (R‑1)

Martha Jane Selph (5) was born 21 Dec. 1844 in AL, and died 11 May 1904 in Franklin Co., AR. She married Francis M. Bradshaw on 1 July 1880 in Logan Co., AR. He was born 1836-1837 in GA. They were both buried in Locke Cem., Franklin Co., AR. All their children were born in AR. (R‑1)

She was born about 1858 in Lexington, Henderson Co., TN, and died about 1880 in Logan Co., AR. He married second Frances Catherine (“Fannie”) Fuller, sister of Susan, on 13 March 1881 in Logan Co., AR. She was born in Sept. 1862 in TN, died in 1933, and was buried in Gilliam Cem., Palestine, Sebastian Co., AR. All their children were born in AR. (R‑1)

Francis (“Frank”) Marion Selph (7) was born 19 Jan. 1849 in AL, died 26 Nov. 1913 in Grant, Choctaw Co., OK, and was buried in Grant, OK. He married Candace Eola Council, daughter of James Hodges Council and Sarah Elizabeth Rogers, on 11 Jan. 1872 in Logan Co., AR. She was born 13 Jan. 1854 in AR, and died 23 June 1930 in Stratford, Garvin Co., OK.

They were in the 1900 census for Cove Twp., Polk Co., AR, when he was a mill hand, and 7 of their 10 children were still living. Five of their living children were still at home, and Perlie and Delley had probably married and moved out. There was a Charlie Hubbard living nearby with wife Pearlie, who may have been one of the daughters. (R‑1)

He married Hattie Roberta Black. She was born 18 Jan. 1896 in AR, and died 31 Oct. 1989 in San Mateo Co., CA. They were in the 1930 census for Dewar City, Henry Twp., Okmulgee Co., OK, with their name spelled Self. In 1930, he was a laborer doing odd jobs, and Frankie was a cook in a restaurant.
