They were in the 1881 census at 103 Woodland St., Sheffield, with son Joseph still unmarried and at home. Joseph was a file cutter, and Phoeby was a stay maker. He married Fanny Tofield, daughter of Thomas Tofield and Mary Eaton. She was born 13 Dec. 1845 in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire[4], and died in Nov. 1918. William Greaves (123) was born about 1853 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and died 4 Nov. 1918 at 111 Channing St., Sheffield, Yorks. He married Selina Bradshaw, daughter of William Bradshaw and Ann Wild, on Wednesday, 4 Feb. 1874 in St. Marys Church, Walkley, Sheffield. She was born Friday, 18 May 1855 at 31 St. Thomas St., Sheffield, and died Saturday, 15 Jan. 1938 at The City General Hospital, Sheffield.

Reported to have been a drinker in early life, he was saved by the Salvation Army, and became a musician. He was a band master for the Langsett Road branch and started Loxley Chapel brass band. His son Joseph was also a musician. When Joseph married, William stated he was a cycle dealer. About 1910 he gave up his cycle shop, moved to 111 Channing St., and joined the Army in 1914. All their children were born in Sheffield. (R‑4)

At age 17 he was working for the Bates family (jewellers and pawnbrokers) in Hillsborough. On 15 Nov. 1944 he enlisted in Northumberland Fusilliers, and became a sergeant. After demobilization and getting his head straight cycling around Derbyshire with Ernest, he started a green grocers shop in Holme Lane. His address when married at age 30 was 72 Holme Lane. Elsie was a teacher when they were married. (R‑4)

He enlisted on 22 Sept. 1914 in 4^th Battalion, Yorks & Lancs “The Hallamshires”, as a Lance Corporal. He was blinded during World War I, and attended St. Dunstan’s, 191401918.
