DESCENDANTS OF DANIEL GRAVES AND MARY FERGUSON

OF NH AND ONTARIO, CANADA

GENERATION 1

Daniel Graves (1) was born in New Hampshire.  He married Mary Ferguson.  She was born in VT.  After marriage they settled in Ontario, Canada, where they resided for the rest of their lives.  They both died somewhere in Ontario, place and dates unknown.

One possible connection for Daniel Graves is the descendants of William Graves of Dover, NH (genealogy 165).  One of William's granddaughters, Mary Graves, is believed to have married Stephen Hazelton, and one of the sons of Daniel Graves was named Hazelton.  Also, one of the descendants of William Graves was a Daniel Graves, possibly born about 1770, the name of whose wife is not known, whose father John was born in Hampton, NH, and died in Andover, NH.  Daniel lived in Barton, VT, and also had a son named Daniel, born either in NH or VT.  This Daniel, son of Daniel, could have been the one who married Mary Ferguson.

Per R‑3, the 1880 census from Forester Twp., Sanilac Co., MI, lists Sheldon H. GravesÕ father and mother as being from NY.

The most likely connection for Daniel Graves would seem to be genealogy 10, Elijah Graves of the U.S. and Ontario, Canada, whose family was closely connected with the Ferguson family, with at least 2 of his children marrying Fergusons.  However, the Graves DNA study, conducted by the Graves Family Association, has shown that Elijah Graves was descended from the same ancestor as Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT (gen. 168), whereas Daniel was descended from the same ancestor as John Graves of Concord, MA (genealogy 166) and Rear Admiral Thomas Graves (genealogy 28).  It is not known whether William Graves of Dover, NH is also descended from that common ancestor, but so far testing has indicated that he probably isnÕt.  Daniel Graves may be descended from John Graves of Concord, MA, Rear Admiral Thomas Graves, or from an earlier ancestor in England.  (R‑1, R‑3)
