Rev. 25 Dec. 2020, Gen. 208
DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES
AND SUSANNA ‑‑‑‑‑‑ OF VT
GENERATION 1
John Graves (1) was born about 1782, probably in Vermont, but possibly in
Connecticut or Massachusetts (or even in England), and died in North
Bennington, VT on 22 April 1819.
This is probably the John Graves who was living in Rupert, VT in 1800,
and he may be connected with Jonathan Graves of Rupert. John married Susanna ------- (possibly
Ames, Hames, or Holmes) in about 1800.
Susanna was born about 1782, probably in Bennington Co., VT, and she
probably is the Susanna Graves whose death is noted in the Shaftsbury Baptist
Church records in 1831. (According
to a family history passed down by Lucy Graves Vieley, John was married before
and may have had a son by a previous marriage.) What is known for certain is that John was Òof ShaftsburyÓ
when he bought land in Bennington County, VT on 3 December 1805. On that date he purchased a
¾ acre lot in North Bennington on the road leading west to White Creek,
NY for $60.41 from Daniel Rogers of Hoosick, NY. (This lot is approximately where the present School and West
Streets intersect in todayÕs North Bennington.) The family probably lived and
worked on the home property, conducting a carpentry and wagon making business
from a workshop, weaving woolen cloth, making shoes and growing a portion of
their own food. The census of 1810
of Bennington County lists John Graves (male 26-44) with 2 sons under 10, a
wife also 26-44, and a daughter under 10.
John died intestate and insolvent
on 22 April 1819, and a complete inventory of his estate is found in the
Bennington County Probate Court proceedings of 5 May 1819[1]. Included in the probate file are
guardianship papers ensuring that his widow Susanna would care for his three
minor children: Bela M. Graves,
age 12; Lucy Ann Graves, age 5; and Rhoda Jane Graves, age 3. In addition, there were at least two
older children, William, born in 1803, and Mary Ann, probably born in 1804 or
Õ05, who were not identified. A
neighbor, Francis Breakenridge, of Bennington County, cosigned the guardianship
agreement with Susanna for the three minor children. The Breakenridge family were prominent members of the local
Baptist community and FrancisÕ mother, Mary Breakenridge, is on record as
refusing to pay taxes for the support of the established (Congregational)
church in Bennington. John and
Susanna may have been members of the West Baptist Church of Shaftsbury, which
was located about a half mile north of their home.
A death notice for John Graves of
Bennington was published in the Rutland Herald of 11 May 1819, which gave his
age as 37 at the time of death.
At this time the family is believed to have consisted of John and
Susanna and a total of five children, although there may have been a sixth. (The U.S. Census of 1820 for
Bennington, VT, which provides the ages of the three female children then
living in the household of widow Susan Graves, is consistent with the ages of
the children listed below. In the
1830 census, Susan has five females in her home, making it possible there was
another daughter.)
According to the Lucy Graves Vieley
family history, BelaÕs mother or grandmother was named Ames, Hames, or
Holmes. It is also possible it may
have been a misreading of Hawes.
There is a possibility that Susanna GravesÕ parents or grandparents were
Jabez and Mary Hawes, who also arrived in North Bennington in 1805 and resided
in the same neighborhood as John and Susanna Graves. Jabez Hawes and his wife moved to North Bennington from
Windham County, VT in about 1805 at about the same time John Graves purchased
his lot in North Bennington. They
were residing in North Bennington for the censuses of 1810, 1820 and 1830. In the 1820 census, a little over one
year after John GravesÕ death, two males were listed as living with the elder
Hawes, possibly William, age 17, and Bela, age 14. The numbers were later crossed out, indicating the boys may
have been living with their grandparents after their fatherÕs death, or the
census taker may have made a mistake.
In the census of 1820, widow Susan
Graves is living in Bennington with three young females, no males are listed in
the household. Two of the females
are under 10 years of age and one 10-16 years. They are likely Rhoda Jane, age 4, Lucy Ann, age 6, and Mary
Ann, probably about 16. Susan
Graves is listed as head of household and her age is given as between 26 and
45. She was probably about 37 or
38 at the time. It is probable
that Susanna Graves was the Susan Graves who joined the West Baptist Church of
Shaftsbury, VT in 1825, and whose death is noted in the church records in 1831. It is also possible that there was another unidentified
daughter of John and Susanna Graves named Susan. Church records do not provide the age of the Susan Graves
who was a member of the church. No
record has been found to indicate Susanna Graves remarried after JohnÕs
death. A file documenting widow
Susannah Graves' death in March 1831 is to be found among the records of the
Bennington County Probate Court.
Like John before her, Susannah died intestate and in debt. The estate was administered by her
son-in-law Samuel H. Matteson. (R‑3)
Children - Graves
2. William Graves, b.c. 1803, m. Polly Thomas, late 1820s, d. 17 August 1830 (at age 27).[2] He took the FreemanÕs Oath in Bennington in 1824, and was appointed by the town as one of a group of Haywardens in 1823. William was the oldest son and inherited part of his fatherÕs estate, which he quitclaimed to Joel Thomas (possibly his wifeÕs father or brother) on 10 April 1826. William appears as head of household in the 1830 census of Bennington, VT. He was buried in the Hinsdillville Cemetery, Old Section, grave number 50. There were no known children. Polly Graves married second Sebastian Wager of Pownal, VT, 18 Nov. 1834 (VT Vital records).
+3. Mary Ann Graves, b.c. 1804-05, m(1) Samuel H. Matteson, 2 October 1827, m(2) James Mead, 20 Oct. 1846, d. 17 May 1882.
+4. Bela M. Graves, b. 1807-08, m. Dorothy M. Wallace, c. 1832, d.c. 1868.
5. Lucy Ann Graves, born c. 1814, North Bennington, VT, never married. Almost certainly the Miss Lucy Graves whose death 12 August 1831 at age 19 was reported by the Vermont Chronicle. She is also described as deceased in a Quitclaim deed by Bela Graves in favor of Samuel H. Matteson signed on 4 October 1831. Her death must have come very close to that of her mother, who was also reported to have died in 1831.
+6. Rhoda Jane Graves, b.c. 1816, m. Warren House c. 1834, d. after 1880.
GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES
(1) AND SUSANNA ------
Mary Ann Graves (11), was born c. 1804-05, died 17 May 1882, and was buried in
Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
She first married Samuel H. Matteson (or Mattison) on 2 October 1827.
(Wedding notice published in the Vermont Gazette.) Mary Ann and Samuel were living in Shaftsbury, VT in 1830,
and they had two female children living with them, one under 5 and a second
5-10, possibly by a previous marriage of SamuelÕs. In the 1840 census, Mary Ann Matteson is residing next door
to Bela Graves in North Hoosick, NY.
She is listed as having one male child from 5-10 and one female from
15-20 in the household. Her
occupation is listed as Òmanufacturing,Ó probably the weaving of wool cloth,
which was the principal occupation in the Walloomsac community where they
resided. Another female from 30-40
is listed as living in the household.
Mary Ann apparently moved with her
sister Lucy and husband to Lake County, Illinois in 1845-46. A Mary Ann Matteson is recorded as
marrying James Mead on 20 or 21 October 1846 in Lake Co., IL. He was born 1815 in England, and died
before 1860. The couple had one
child, a son named George, before separating.
Mary Ann married second James Mead
on 20 Oct. 1846. In the 1850
census two probable sons of Samuel and Mary Ann are listed in the household of
James and Mary Ann Mead in Lake County, IL. Sylvester and Schuyler Mattison were listed as Mead in that
census. In later censuses they
revert to Mattison. Mary Ann lived
until 1870 in Lake County, IL, then moved to Minneapolis where her son Schuyler
had a horse car and later a taxi company.
Mary Ann Mead is recorded as living with her son George in Minneapolis,
MN, in the censuses of 1870 and 1880.
(R‑3)
Children - Matteson/Mattison
+7. Sylvester B. Mattison, b. 6 April 1829, m. Hulda Jane Kidder, 27 Jan. 1853, d. 2 April 1904.
+8. Schuyler W. Mattison, b. Oct. 1836, m. Mary R. Crocker, 11 Feb. 1858, d. 23 Sept. 1908.
Children - Mead
9. George Henry Mead, b. Sept. 1849 (Warren, Lake Co., IL), m. Ella E. Kimball, 1909, d. 30 April 1926 (Ladysmith, Rusk Co., WI). She was born about 1852 in NH. They were in the 1910 census for Flambeau, Rusk Co., WI, when 3 of her 4 children by her first marriage were still living, and 2 of those children were living with them.
Bela M. Graves (4) was born about 1808 in North Bennington, VT, and died
between 1865 and 1869 in southeastern Kansas, probably in what is now Wilson
Co. (According to the death
certificate for his son James, Bela was born in CT.) According to Lucy Graves VieleyÕs account, he died suddenly
while working on the construction of a woolen mill and his body was brought
home in a wagon. (Another story
passed down through the Horace Graves family has it that he was driving cattle
to market in New Chicago (now Chanute), KS, when he was stricken and
died.) An 1864 petition to the
Governor of Kansas requesting incorporation of Wilson County contains the name
of B Graves. Judging by the names
of other well-known signers, Bela must have lived near the town of Coyville,
KS. The location of his grave is
at present unknown.
He married Dorothy M. Wallace,
daughter of John Wallace and Nancy Chamberlin or Chamberlain of Hoosick, NY, in
about 1830-32 in NY (probably in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co.). She was born 21 June 1808 in NY
(probably in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY), died 23 October 1892 in Avoca
Township, Livingston County, IL.
She is buried with her daughter Mary Ann (Graves) Stanford in the Patty
Cemetery, Avoca Township, Livingston Co., IL.
Bela and Dorothy GravesÕ oldest
daughter, Mary Ann Graves, was probably born in Vermont in 1833, and she gave
that as her birthplace in the censuses of 1870 and 1880. A daughter under 5 is listed in the
1835 New York State State census for Granville, Washington County. The oldest son, John Graves, indicated
in his Civil War pension application that he was born in Rutland, VT in August
1837. There is a good possibility
Bela was working on a construction project of some kind, or that he was
employed by the Asa Graves familyÕs tannery in Rutland. The family moved from Rutland to North
Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY[3]
sometime prior to the census of 1840.
In that census BelaÕs employment is listed as Òmanufacturing,Ó probably
the weaving of wool cloth. In
1842-43, the family moved to Medina County, Ohio, where their fourth child,
James Bela Graves, was born in 1843.
NOTE: Beginning in the 1820s with William B. Graves in Medina
Township, there were several Graves families residing in Medina County. Each is from a different Graves
ancestor, John of Concord, MA., Rear Admiral Thomas Graves, and Deacon George
Graves. The Lebbeus Graves Jr.
family of Granville, NY (from the Rear Admiral Thomas Graves line) moved to
Spenser Township from Le Roy, NY in about 1835 and Bela may have been related
to this family in some way. Also,
the families of Ansel Graves Sr. and John Wallace Jr. (DorothyÕs father) were
living next-door to each other in Hoosick, NY at the time of the 1800
census. An F.W. Graves also lived
in Spenser Township, Medina County from the mid-1830s on. Another intriguing aspect is the
presence in the early 1840s of Henry Ainsworth in Lodi, and Judah Troop
Ainsworth, in Medina, two fellow Vermonters and possible relatives. (Bela and Dorothy gave their second son
Horace -- born in New York in1839, prior to the move west -- the middle name of
Ainsworth, as Horace did with his son Maurice. The Wallace and Ainsworth families had intermarried in the
early 1800s.) Further research
will be necessary to determine whether Bela and Dorothy moved to Medina, OH in
the early 1840s to join a related Graves family, because of an Ainsworth
connection, or an offer of employment by a relative or friend from New York or
Vermont, or because of some other connection.
The whereabouts of the family from
1844 to 1850 is unclear, but daughter Lucy Ann Graves, born in Ohio in 1846,
listed Hockhocking, Athens County, Ohio as her birthplace. (This is the original Indian name of
the Hocking River and the valley near Athens, OH.) Bela may have been working on the construction of the
Hocking Canal, which opened in 1842 and which was completed a few years
later. Sometime prior to 1850 the
family moved to the Dayton, Ohio area (Kettering, Montgomery County). The family appears in the 1850 Census
in Kettering,[4] Van Buren
Township, Montgomery County, OH where BelaÕs occupation is listed as
Òcarpenter.Ó
Van Buren Township was the site of
the Watervliet Shaker Community from about 1808 until its dissolution in the
early 1900s. The settlement was
named after the first Shaker Community in the United States in Watervliet, NY,
near the Rensselaer County home of the Bela Graves and Dorothy Wallace Graves
family. There were several families by the name of Wallace living in
Watervliet, NY, and this may have been the connection that brought Bela to
western Ohio.
According to a family history
passed down through Lucy Ann Graves Vieley, the family moved to Waukegan, Lake
County Illinois in 1852. (In the
mid-1840s, BelaÕs younger sister Rhoda Jane House had moved west to Warren,
Lake County, IL, near Waukegan in an area where many New Englanders and
Vermonters had settled. BelaÕs
older sister Mary Ann Matteson probably also moved to Illinois with her sister
Rhoda and family in about 1845-46.)
The family also sojourned for a
time in Ottawa, IL, where Bela reportedly tended a lock or toll bridge on the
Illinois Central Canal. They then
settled in Avoca Twp., Livingston County, Illinois in about 1858. The family appears in the U.S. Census
of 1860 in Avoca, Livingston County, Illinois. (R-1, R-2), with Bela listed as
a Òfarmer,Ó though without an amount for the value of real estate owned,
indicating he was probably renting a farm on which the family lived.
In the mid-1860s, Bela and Dorothy
and at least two of their children joined the land rush to southeastern Kansas
as Osage Indian lands were opened up to white settlers. Bela and Dorothy, along with son James
Bela, daughter Mary Ann and her husband Ed Stanford and their sons William and
Horace, went to southeastern Kansas (probably Wilson County) sometime during
the 1864-67 period. Neither the
Graves nor the Stanford families appear in the 1865 Kansas territorial census,
although Mary Ann Graves StanfordÕs daughter, Ina May, was born there in
1865. After BelaÕs death, Dorothy
Graves, returned with the family to Livingston County, IL. She is found in the U.S. Census of
1870, at age 62, living in the home of her daughter Rhoda Ann Graves Demoss and
husband Tom in Avoca Township, Livingston Co., IL. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3)

Rhoda Jane Graves (6) was born
1816 in North Bennington, VT, and died sometime after 1880 (no record of
her death has been found). She
married Warren House about 1834 in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., VT. The couple first lived in Shaftsbury,
VT, near Warren HousesÕ parents, probably William and Lydia House. They departed VT about 1846-47 when
many Vermonters moved to northern Illinois. The Warren House family is listed in the U.S. Census of 1850
in Warren, Lake County, IL, with WarrenÕs occupation given as a farmer.[5] From 1860 on, Warren House is listed as
a ÒpauperÓ in the Lake County Poor House in Libertyville, IL. In later censuses he is listed as
insane and apparently resided in the asylum until his death some time between
1880 and 1900. Rhoda was living
with her daughterÕs family in the 1860 census for Warren, Lake Co., IL. (R‑3)

CHILDREN OF MARY ANN GRAVES
(11)
Sylvester B. Mattison (7) was born 6 April 1829, probably in Bennington, VT, and
died 2 April 1904 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN. He married Huldah Jane Kidder on 27 Jan. 1853 in Lake Co.,
IL. She was born about 1833 in
Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY, and died 26 April 1899 in Minneapolis, MN.
They were in the 1860 census for
Warren, Lake Co., IL, with wife Jane, and children Joel A., 6, and Ida J.,
2. They were in the 1880 census
for Minneapolis, MN, with all 4 of their children at home. He was in the 1900 census for
Minneapolis, with daughter Sylvester, and son William, born Nov. 1885, SD,
living with him. The 1900 census
record has been written over, and it isnÕt clear whether William was a son of
Sylvester or of Sylvester. (R‑6)
Children - Mattison, by Huldah
J. Kidder
22. Joel A. Mattison, b.c. 1854 (IL), d. 14 May 1914 (Hennepin Co., MN).
23. Frank E. Mattison, b. 7 Feb. 1860 (WI), m. Lena ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 14 April 1945 (Los Angeles, CA). This information may not be entirely correct, since the 1900 census for this Frank in Milwaukee, WI, with wife Lena, lists both his parents born in Germany and spells his name as Mathieson.
24. Ida Jane Mattison, b.c, 1858 (Lake Co., IL), d. 11 Feb. 1929 (Hennepin Co., MN). Her birthdate of Dec. 1862 in the 1900 census is clearly wrong, since the 1860 census lists her as 2.
25. Sylvia J. Mattison, b. Sept. 1870 (Lake Co., IL), d. 4 June 1954 (Seattle, WA).
Schuyler W. Mattison (8) was born in Oct. 1836, probably in Rensselaer Co., NY,
and died 23 Sept. 1908 in Newark, Essex Co., NJ. He married Mary R. Crocker on 11 Feb. 1858 in Kenosha,
Kenosha Co., WI. She was born
about 1837 in MI, and died about 1880 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN. They were in the 1860 census for
Warren, Lake Co., IL, with no children.
They were in the 1870 census for Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN. He is probably the one in the 1880
census for Chicago, Cook Co., IL, lodger with John and Bertha Gottlieb.

born 30 Oct. 1840 in Acworth, GA (although the 1870 census gave her age as 24),
and died 27 Dec. 1924 in Kansas State Soldiers Home, Dodge City, KS. In the 1860 census for Eppards Point
Twp., Livingston Co., IL, he was a farm laborer in the household of James
Bright. They were in the 1870
census for Center, Vernon Co., MO, with children Charles and Mattie, when he
was listed as an engineer. The
1880 census for Fairbury, Jefferson Co., NE, lists John Graves, 40, NY,
restaurant keeper, and his wife, Mary A., 38, GA, no children. They did have the 5 children listed
below, but they all died before the next census. (R‑3)

Kinsley G. House (16) was born 27 April 1835 in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., VT,
and died 18 May 1920 in Warren, Lake Co., IL He first married Elizabeth Stafford on 22 Feb. 1858 in

1835 in NH (or MA), and died 23 July 1905 in Oconto, WI.. They were in the 1880 census for
Oconto, Oconto Co., WI, when he was a fisherman. Also in this same 1880 census living next to Kinsley was
Mary House, daughter, born about 1854 in VT, with 1 son, Hilbert House, born
about 1873 in IL (not known who either of them were). Kinsley and Elizabeth must have divorced, since she married
second Almon D. Washburn on 20 Jan. 1891 in Oconto, WI. He was born 10 Jan. 1831 in Otsego, NY,
and died 2 May 1902 in Oconto, WI.

and died 3 Feb. 1941 in Kenosha, WI.
As far as can be determined, she isnÕt in any census record with
Kinsley. Kinsley was apparently
the one in the 1900 census for Oconto, Oconto Co., WI, listed as G. E. House,

Oconto Co., WI, divorced, living alone (listed as Kensley S. Honse by
Ancestry.com).
Kinsley and Mary may have been the
ones in the 1920 census for Wauconda, Lake Co., IL (although R‑4 said Warren
Twp., Lake Co., IL), with his name listed as Henry K. Harris, and children Ella
R. Casdy, b.c. 1870, IL, Eva J. Casdy, b.c. 1889, IL, and Paul R. Casdy, b.c.
1892, IL. Ella may have been a
daughter of Mary by a first marriage, and the 2 younger children may have been
EllaÕs rather than MaryÕs. (R‑4)
