DESCENDANTS OF JOEL GRAVES OF NY

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Joel Graves (1) may have been born about 1770 or 1774, and died in Moresville, Delaware Co., NY.  Moresville is now Grand Gorge, a village in the town of Roxbury.  Joel married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  The information about him and much about his descendants was copied from an old family Bible.

It appears likely that Joel Graves was descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (genealogy 166) or Rear Adm. Thomas Graves (genealogy 28), based on Y-DNA test results.  It had previously seemed that descent from immigrant Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT (genealogy 168) was more likely, since the name Joel Graves was used more often in that family, and some of the descendants also lived in Lenawee Co., MI, but the DNA results disprove that possibility.  It is also likely that this Joel Graves is the same as the probable father of William Graves of genealogy 506, listed in the 1850 census for Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI, with William and his family.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF JOEL GRAVES (1)

Joel Graves (2) may have been born about 1795 (possibly in CT, according to the 1880 census for his son Sylvanus), and died about 1830 in Egypt, Wayne Co., NY.  He married at least twice, and had children by two wives.  His second wife was Abigail Secor , daughter of John D. Secor and Elinor Hannah Jones.  She was born in Sept. 1786 in Blenheim, Schoharie Co., NY, and died 5 June 1878 in Burton, Genesee Co., MI. (R‑1, R‑3)

George W. (Washington?) Graves (5) was born 22 Feb. 1817 in Morrisville, Madison Co., NY, and died 18 April 1845 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI.  He first married Ann Eliza Snell.  She was born 22 Dec. 1813 in Waterford, Erie Co., PA, and died 23 Feb. 1840 in Tecumseh, MI (possibly of childbirth complications).  He married second Caroline Lord Royce.  She was born 12 Oct. 1815 in New London, CT, and died 13 April 1886 in Tecumseh, MI.  She was in the 1850 census for Tecumseh, MI, spinster, with her 2 children (both born in MI) and 6 boarders.  She was in the 1860 census for Tecumseh, MI, married to Enoch Tindall, with her 2 children by George.  (R‑1)

Joel Graves (7) was born 12 April 1823 in Delaware Co., NY, and died 8 Aug. 1907 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI.  He married Adeline Root, daughter of Isaac Root and Ruth Shadboat, in 1848.  She was born 1 May 1828 in Saratoga Co., NY, and died 4 Nov. 1911 in Flint, MI.  (R‑3)

    13.   Mary Adella Graves, b. 29 Dec. 1854 (Lockport, NY), m. Levi Jerome, 12 Nov. 1915 (Fostoria, Tuscola Co., MI), d. 28 Feb. 1935 (Flint, MI).  He was b.c. 1854 in OH, son of Levi L. Jerome and Julia A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He probably m(1) Sarah Ann ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1876.

    14.   Emma Adaline Graves, b. 8 Dec. 1857 (NY), d. 20 Feb. 1885 (MI).

    15.   John Graves, b. 22 Oct. 1860 (near Rochester, NY), m. Hattie May Leach, 31 Aug. 1886 (Flint, MI), d. 27 Sept. 1948 (Flint, Genesee Co., MI).  She was b.c. 1866 in OH.

+16.   Willard E. Graves, b. 21 March 1863, m. Belle Adams, 25 Feb. 1890, d. 19 March 1952.

    17.   Addie A. Graves, b. May 1865 (MI), m(1) Ira E. Webb, 2 Oct. 1883 (Burton, , Genesee Co., MI), m(2) Charles D. Hiller, d. 12 June 1936 (Flint, Genesee Co., MI).  Ira was b.c. 1861 in Bombay, Franklin Co., NY.

+18.   Joel Seymour Graves, b. 23 July 1868, m. Edith Bell ‑‑‑‑‑‑, 1893, d. 6 Dec. 1943.

    19.   Clarence A. Graves, b. 6 May 1871 (Burton Twp., Genesee Co., MI), d. 19 Oct. 1928 (Flint, Genesee Co., MI).

 

Sylvanus P. Graves (8) was born about 1825 in NY, and died 11 Oct. 1896 in Flushing, Genesee Co., MI.  He married Jane ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1832 in NY.  They were in the 1870 census for Clayton, Genesee Co., MI.  He was in the 1880 census for Clayton, Genesee Co., MI, with wife Caroline.  Both children were born in MI.  (R‑3)

John Graves (9) was born 8 June 1828 in Schoharie Co., NY, and died 8 Jan. 1906 in Burton, Genesee Co., MI.  He married Philena ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born 23 July 1836 in NY, and died 20 May 1897 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI.  (R‑3)

CHILDREN OF GEORGE W. GRAVES (5)

George Lord Graves (12) was born 12 Nov. 1843 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI, and died 4 April 1915 in Milwaukee, WI.  He first married Sophia Matilda Osborne, daughter of William Hogarth Osborne and Mary Jane Foote, on 24 July 1861 in MI.  She was born 10 April 1845 in Macon, Lenawee Co., MI, and died 25 March 1884 in Milwaukee, WI.  This family was recorded on the 1870 census in Hubbard, Dodge Co., WI and the 1880 census in Milwaukee, WI; their first son was born in MI and the other two in WI.  He married second Mary (or May) Stuart Bridges, daughter of Albert Charles Bridges and Mary Britton Fiske, on 27 June 1886.  She was born 1 April 1860 in WI, and died 15 July 1950.  This family was recorded on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Milwaukee, WI; their son was born in WI.  George, Sophie, and Mary were buried in Forest Home Cem., Milwaukee, WI.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Willard E. Graves (16) was born 21 March 1863 in Albany, NY, and died 19 March 1952 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.  He married Belle Adams, daughter of William James Adams and Louia Jeffers, on 25 Feb. 1890 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI.    She was born 28 June 1867 in Burton Twp., and died 8 June 1946 in Flint, both in Genesee Co., MI.  All their children were born in MI, probably all in Genesee Co.  (R‑3)

Joel Seymour Graves (18) was born 23 July 1868 in Genesee Co., MI, and died 6 Dec. 1943 in Los Angeles Co., CA.  He married Edith Bell ‑‑‑‑‑‑ in 1893.  She was born 8 June 1872 in Genesee Co., MI, and died 30 Aug. 1959 in Los Angeles Co., CA.  All their children were born in MI.  (R‑3)

Charles Graves (22) was born about 1860 in MI, and died 19 Nov. 1954 in Genesee Co., MI.  He married Mary Alice Thurston, called Alice, daughter of Orlando Thurston and Lucinda ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 26 Jan. 1887 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI.  (Mary Alice was with her parents in the 1860 census for Davison, Genesee Co., MI.)  She was born 16 Sept. 1858 in Goodrich, MI, and died 3 Nov. 1932 in Flint, MI.  They were in the 1900 census for Burton, Genesee Co., MI, with his widowed father and her widowed mother living with them.  (R‑3)

Louanna Graves (23) was born 6 Sept. 1865 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI, and died 11 July 1951 in Midland, Midland Co., MI.  She married William L. Baker about 1889.  He was born 17 Aug. 1862 (or 1863 according to the 1900 census) in Burton, Genesee Co., MI, and died 16 Feb. 1916 in Midland, MI.  They were in the 1900 census for Midland, MI, with 4 of their 5 children still living, and with niece Anna Ackerman living with them.  They were in the 1910 census for Midland, MI.  All their children were born in MI, probably all in Midland.  (R‑3)

William Hagerman Graves (24) was born 30 Aug. 1867 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI, died 19 Sept. 1943 in Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA, and was buried in Forest Home Cem., Milwaukee, WI in the same cemetery as his parents and brothers.  He married Caroline May Elliott, daughter of Theodore Bates Elliott and Lillie Jewett Worcester, on 23 July 1895 in Bloomsbury St. George, England.  She was born 6 Dec. 1870 in MN, and died in 1952.  They were in the 1930 census for Cambridge, MA, with their last 2 children still living at home.  He was an apartment manager in 1930.  (R‑2)

Earl S. Graves (28) was born 6 March 1892 in Flint, Genesee Co., MI, and died 2 July 1979 in Palm Beach, FL.  He married Edna Mae Williams, daughter of William Myron Williams and Mary A. Kronner, on 19 June 1926 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.  She was born 28 July 1893 in Detroit, and died in April 1979 in FL.  They were in the 1940 census for Detroit, MI.  All their children were born in MI, probably all in Detroit.  (R‑3)

Marion Osborne Graves (40) was born 23 May 1896 in Boston, MA, and died in Feb. 1955 in India.  She married Grant Hyde Code, son of James Grant Code and Frances F. S. Cleaver, in 1920 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA.  He was born 2 March 1896 in La Crosse, La Crosse Co., WI, died 28 Aug. 1974 in New York City, NY, and was buried in Allegheny County Memorial Park Allison Park, Allegheny Co., PA.  They were in the 1930 census for Cambridge, MA and the 1940 census in New York, Kings Co., NY.  (R‑2)

    46.   Grant Hyde Code, Jr., b. 21 June 1921 (Cambridge, MA), d. 16 May 1936 (New Rochelle, Westchester Co., NY).  Killed by a train.  Bur. Allegheny County Memorial Park.  Cremated.

 

Theodore Eliot Graves (41) was born 22 May 1899 in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, and died in Oct. 1980 in Bozman, Talbot Co., MD.  He married Cordelia Dumaine, daughter of Frederic C. Dumaine and Elizabeth Ware Thomas, in Aug. 1931 in Groton, MA.  She was born 17 Feb. 1907 in Concord, MA, and died 20 May 1993 in Bozman, MD.  They were in the 1940 census for West Orange, Essex Co., NJ.  (R‑2)
