(1)
John William Graves (2) was born 14 Feb. 1814 in VA, and died in April 1850 in
Rockingham Co., VA, at age 36 of pneumonia, "ill 8 days". This death information is from the 1850
census records.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Roberts,
daughter of Dr. John H. Roberts and Mary Hopkins, on 23 Dec. 1841. She was listed as age 27, born about
1823, in the 1850 census for Rockingham Co., VA. She was born 11 Aug. 1824 in VA, died 10 May 1888 in Oxford, OH, buried in Indian
Creek Cem. near Oxford, Ohio.
Their marriage bond, dated 20 Dec. 1841, was filed at the Rockingham Co.
Courthouse in Harrisonburg, VA.
The bond was signed by John Graves and John H. Roberts. It seems reasonable
to assume that John Graves was the father of John W. Graves. All their children were born in

Station, and died 30 Nov. 1914 in Heyworth, McLean Co., IL. He was shown in the 1850 census for
Rockingham Co. He moved to McLean
Co., Illinois via Oxford, Ohio and Richmond, Indiana. He was first an evangelist and then a farmer. He married Margaret C. Stillman. His daughter Anna recalled that George
visited relatives in Buffalo, NY. and Cleveland, Ohio, from his home near
Heyworth, IL. All their children
were born in IL.
A family story is that George was Òbound outÓ, working
for another farming family to pay family debts that had come after his fatherÕs
death. This was during the Civil
War in Rockingham Co., which is in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The farmerÕs wife didnÕt like him but
the farmer did. George tried to
escape by enlisting in both armies but he was rejected - too young and
too small. As the war was
concluding, the farmer came to him one night and said that he couldnÕt do
anything more to help in the struggle he was having with his wife. So, having packed him some food, the
farmer told him he ought to go north with passing Union armies returning
north. He did, driving a mule team
to Ohio. He became an evangelist,
traveled the midwest, stopped in Illinois, met and married his wife, a school
teacher, and became a Central Illinois farmer who was among the first to get
involved in hybriding corn.
According to a Virginia newspaper article, as a 50 year old man, he
returned to Virginia to visit the farmer and family he had lived with.
They were in the 1900 census for
Randolph, McLean Co., IL, with all 4 of their children. (R‑1, R‑3, R‑5)
