DESCENDANTS
OF WARREN GRAVES AND HARRIETTE ------ OF SC, AND CASWELL CO. & ROCKINGHAM
CO., NC
GENERATION
1
Warren Graves (1) was born in April
1823[1]
in NC, and died after 1900.
According to R‑2, Warren was sold from the Carter plantation of
South Carolina to the Graves plantation in Caswell Co., so Warren may have been
born in SC rather than NC. He
married Harriette (or Harriet) ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1825 in NC (although
her age was given as 38 in the 1870 census), and died between 1880-1900. Warren Graves started the Graves family
church in 1888.
They were in the 1870 census for
Stony Creek Twp., Caswell Co., NC, living next to the white family of Azariah
and Isabella Graves[2], whose
slaves they may have been before emancipation. They were in the 1880 census for Locust Creek Twp., Caswell
Co., NC. Warren was in the 1900
census for Williamsburg Twp., Rockingham Co., NC (next to Caswell Co.), living
next to his son Scott. In the 1900
census, 2 grandchildren, Walter and Lula Graves, were living with Warren, but
it is not known whose children they were.
He was a farmer. All their
children were born in NC, probably all in Caswell Co.

[1] This birth date is from the 1900 census, and is confirmed by the age of 57 given for him in the 1880 census. The 1870 census gives his age as 45 (born about 1825).
[2] This Azariah Graves was born in 1815, and was one of the sons of Gen. Azariah Graves and Elizabeth Williams of Caswell Co., NC. See genealogy 270 for more information.
[3] The 1880 census gave his date of birth as Aug. 1879, but the 1900 census gave June 1880. The 1880 date in the 1900 census is clearly wrong, since he was 10 months old when the 1880 census was taken.
[4] According to
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org), General Winfield Scott (June 13, 1786
- May 29, 1866) was a United States Army general, diplomat, and
presidential candidate. Known as "Old Fuss and Feathers" and the
"Grand Old Man of the Army", he served on active duty as a general
longer than any other man in American history and most historians[rate
him the ablest American commander of his time. Over the course of his
fifty-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American
War, the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, and, briefly, the American
Civil War, conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would
be used to defeat the Confederacy.
A national hero after the Mexican-American War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, to nominate Scott in the United States presidential election. Scott lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1856 to the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American since George Washington to hold that rank.
